You lucked out and found a feeding school. Once they were finished eating they went off to rest and got lockjaw. As stated above, move to another location and be thankful you were in the right place at the right time. By they way, one of the pros, I think it was Jimmy Houston, told a story about his nonboater in a tournament. Seems the guy was not interested in fishing at all until 2 PM. That's what he told Jimmy and he just sat in the boat, napping and eating. When 1:30 PM arrived he told Jimmy where he wanted to go as it was his turn to pick the afternoon location. Jimmy pulled up to the spot and the guy got up from the seat, selected one if his rods, and exactly at 2 PM he started casting as far as he could. And you know what happened? He hit a bass feeding frenzy and he caught his limit on his first five casts. When the bite stopped he sat down and said he was finished fishing for the day. Seems the bass in that lake at that location ate at 2 PM every day at time of the season and the nonboater knew about it. Go figure.

And to add to this thread's confusion we have the use of bass fishing jargon that can get us into trouble with outsiders in a New York minute. We all can provide examples of what we can say that can be misinterpreted and thought to be offensive to the uninformed and our terms are actually funny outside of bass fishing. So I ask everyone to view Glenn's list of fishing terms and their meanings and then make up a number of funny examples that make sense to us but not to non-fishing people. But keep them to yourself or start a separate thread asking for the things we say that could get us into trouble. I think I will check my favorite worm, now.

After a heavy rain storm on the Historic James River I took this photo of a beautiful rainbow hitting Jimmy Dean's estate's dock. It was so nice that I entered it into the Virginia State Fair's photo contest along with my wife's "Grandma and Marlee" quilt. Well, my wife won first place for her quilt and I did not get one "honorable mention" for my photo. OK, that's the way it goes. Here is the photo for your view and enjoyment. Sorry if it is on its side. I don't know how to move it around.

Bass fishing changes from minute to minute; hour to hour; day to day; season to season. You have to be fluid enough to "change" your technique and/or bait to meet the "change challenge." From cover to structure to water depth to water temperature to above surface level weather to barometric pressure to fishing pressure to grass and pads, to blowdowns, to docks and piers to a stick up you have to be able to see the change and adapt to it or go in search of the answer to the newest change. The pros seem to have a 6th sense about change that we are all striving to attain. Electronics are our eyes underwater and add a paper map to the formula you can note the underwater structure changes that "should" hold bass. We can call this change "a pattern" or call it a deep drop off or hole or hump. But it is a change and unless you are able to modify your approach and thinking you will miss the "hints" leading to catching more fish.

For those that did not know about the significance of snow cover in Siberia... Without getting too technical research over the past 20 years shows that when there is a large rapid buildup of snow cover in Siberia and over certain sections of Siberia in particular DURING MONTH OF OCTOBER it has significant implications for the supply of cold air over the Arctic regions that come Southward during the winter into North America. It also has significant implications for the overall jet stream pattern during the winter months in North America and the Western Hemisphere. All that being said keep in mind this is not an absolute certainty. Last winter the snow cover was quite advanced and quite extensive in Siberia but the second strongest EL NINO on record had a significant impact of the overall jet stream pattern throughout the winter. This year since we will not have even a week La Nina it is quite likely that the snow cover build up in October in Siberia will have a much bigger impact on the overall winter patterns in North America. Finally, I have been asked by many people already how I view the winter and I think it's a mistake in September to make to make strong comments about the winter one way or the other. I will say however that based upon the early data --- especially the buildup of very warm ocean water temperature anomalies in the northeastern Pacific in and around the Gulf of Alaska --- I am somewhat positive with regard to this winter being at least normal. And if things break the right way we could be active and colder and snowier than normal for the eastern part of the country.

Looks like Hurricane Karl (hurricane later this week) will be coming ashore along the Atlantic coast. But wait! There will be a strong high pressure system over the eastern US that could drive the storm either into the Atlantic or into the Gulf. Stay tuned to see where the storm will be heading. Doc, would you believe that the VG&IF has only 120 active game wardens on duty in the entire Commonwealth? That is why people on Virginia waters do not have their Safe Boating Course certificate and we have a lot of uninformed individuals on the waters doing dumb stuff. These people know they will not be checked or ticketed while on the water and VDG&IF does not have the manpower to check everyone on the water. I will call my friend at VG&IF and ask him to consider having some of their conservation officers assigned to the areas around the lakes to post at the ramps to check the boaters before they blast off. However, the conservation officers cannot check every boat dock or private residence and these are locations the problem boaters emanate from. However, with deer hunting season beginning October 1st the conservation officers will have their hands full with the hunters and the problems with dummies on our waterways will fade into the sunset. I had an encounter with a large ski boat on the Rappahannock River four years ago. The guy came screaming up the river and when he got around me he did a series of wheelies, throwing large wakes at my boat. I met another bass fisherman and his young son after I was forced to leave where I was fishing and they had the same experience with the ski boat. So, what could I have done? First, just left and went somewhere else. Second, fire my flare gun at the ski boat. Third, fire my .38 I carry in my boat at the ski boat. Fourth, try to write down the ski boat's number and report him. Of course, I used better judgement and just moved on. Until the weather gets cooler and the jet skiers quit using their jet skis plus the other idiots on the water go somewhere else, we will be on our own when on Virginia waters. May I suggest you drive to Richmond for the Richmond Fishing Expo at the end of Januaryand meet the guys from the VDG&IF. Great guys and you can speak with them about your experiences; what to do; and ask them for their assistance next year. Bassin, you know a good vest costs upwards of $200 and more so don't figure on a lower price in your equation. Mustangs are expensive but they are comfortable and you can keep them on at all times and not have them interfere with your fishing. May I suggest going on the Internet to Tackle Warehouse and reading about different baitcasting rods and reels? Then check out the styles you like on the BPS web page. If the rod and reel are less expensive on-line then in the store you can order it and pick it up at your local BPS without paying shipping. Otherwise you can order it at the store and have them sent to your local BPS free of charge. The guy who fixes reels in the greater Richmond, Virginia area likes Lew's and them Shimano for reels. He is not crazy about other brands. As for rods, your choice. Just remember to double check the rod's parameters to make sure they fit your fishing techniques and bait sizes. Wow. Maybe the were mating. I have seen copperheads along the bank and on rocks and at my house in Bon Air by Bosher's Dam but never in the water. I have seen water moccasins on the Appomattox River. You had a close call, especially when you realize that snakes are anti-social so to have one try to intercept you is chilling, to say the least.

Bummer. The lady sounds like a wonderful person who supported her husband's outdoor activities. You were fortunate to have her in your life and as stated above, remember the good times. RIP.

Fishblue, you should be able to fish the lagoon from the road side. I don't remember if you need to get a special license to fish the lagoon. The lagoon starts towards the zoo and meanders around to St. Charles Avenue. Double check if there is a fishing license regulation.

If they hit Senkos then throw Senkos until they change their appetite and want something else. You have to also wear purple and gold and yell "Geaux Tigers" when you set the hook. By doing this you will catch them on all types of baits!!!! Have fun and don't forget Audubon Park Lagoon. Those bass may want baits other than Senkos.
