  1. My hardest time to locate and catch fish would have to be from around 10am till 3pm. For some reason I can't find quality fish on the bodies of water I fish. I have a good stringer early usually larger than anyone else in the tournaments I'm fishing I just am un able to cull out fish, or atleast quality fish during this time. And I have tried going deeper fishing slower and faster. tried closer to cover and several other things. There is just some thing that I"m doing at this time that the fish aren't interested in. Good luck fishing.
  2. I was hoping that I could draw from the knowledge of the members on this site to help me with a tough decition. I was looking at the lowrance series of fishfinder but then I came across the Humminbird 787c2. For the dollar value I can't find a lowrance that seems to compare. The bird has higher resolution at 640V x 480H. Where the Lowrance has 480V x 480H. The bird alsAdd-on Accessory Capability: Wireless Sonar Link, WeatherSense Barometric Pressure, PC Connection Kit & SystemLink Depth Capability: 1500 ft Display Window Size: 5 Diagonal Display Matrix: 640V x 480H Display Type: Color TFT, Sunlight Viewable, Hemispherical Viewing Power Output: 500 Watts (RMS), 4000 Watts (Peak to Peak) Operating Frequency: 200kHz & 83 kHz Sonar Coverage: 20° & 60° @ -10db Target Separation: 2 ½ Inches Temperature: Included in transducer Speed: GPS speed included Transducer: Inside Hull or Transom Mount Power Input Range: 10-20 VDC Mounting: Gimbal or Optional In-Dash Unit Size: Installed on Gimbal: 6.9W x 7.7H x 4.5D (min) Installed In-dash: 6.9W x 5.4H x 1.25D; Required Minimum 3 behind dash clearance Communication: NMEA O183 Data Output, Advanced Accessory System Cartography: Built-in 4 nm UniMap; Optional Navionics Gold HotMap Premium on MMC or SD Cable GPS Features: WAAS, 2000 Waypoints, 50 Routes, 25 Tracks with 20000 Points Each These are the spec on the bird. I can get it for $629 so for dollar value I think its the best buy. Does anyone have one of these and if so how do they perform compared to the Lowrances. Does anyone have any thoughts on the unit. any help would be apreciated. Thanks Scott
  3. I started fishing in tounaments last year and I would like to say with good success. I have a 19' skeeter w/ a 200 murc on it. I was wondering if I could get some tips on how to handle the boat at takeoff. The boat runs at between 67 and 70 mph. I know that its probably crazy but when I have the boat planed out and just going full bore at blastoff. It fells like the boat will flip or something. I was wondering if this is a normal feeling or if there is a chance that if the boat isn't handled right that you may wreck. If I could get some tips on handling the boat I would apriciate any help.
  4. To be a good bass fisherman I believe that it take a vast knowledge of presntations and the insite of hours on the lake to know when to change the presentation. The common mistake that the amateurs make vs the pros is the amateur take to long to come up with the pattern that produce fish in that give situation. I was say the biggest thing a person can do is send a ton of time on the water and have a vast supply of bassin knowldge. Then be able to draw from this knowledge throughout the day. i have a bass log that I keep everyday that I"m on the water. I will take a digital tape recorder on the lake with me this allows me to take notes on the lake then later put them on paper. Bait presentation I would have to say would be the most import ( this includes size, speed and color) Then next is bait placement. I have one presentation that I will share. I love this in summer. I use a rattle trap and will fish it in over 30'. I will slow roll it almost like you would a spinner bait. but at times instead of ripping it I will dead stick it for 20 to 30 secs then take of burning it then slow down to a slow roll then stop it again and let it sit. This last summer produced my top 5 fish in size. give it a try. and remember to record your activities on the lake b/c if your mind is like mine you will forget something bythe time you get back to the dock Good luck fishing Scott
  5. So far what you guys are saying is what I have found to to be true I just heard on the TV yesterday a pro talking about smallmouth and said that its common to have a 6lber in with a bunch of dinks. So I thought I would ask you guys what your experience was. The best I have ever done on schooling fish was last year. My dad during a prefishing session for a tourney in 5 casts put almost 20lbs of smallies in the boat. and we have had several times that we will get in a group that yeilds 5 to 7 bass between 3-4 lbs. These are all smallies. I just haven't had much luck ever though when I'm catching a lont of dinks to pull a toad out of the same area. Thanks for your input keep them coming. Scott
  6. I have been told that the smallies that have red eyes are the ones that just came up from deeper water early in the spring. I don't believe this b/c I have caught smallies all year long that have red eyes. So I was wondering if anyone knows why some have red eyes and other don't. what causes this? Thanks Scott
  7. I was hoping that I could probe the minds qne experience of the fisherman on this site. I have a question that I have heard different things about. In your experience when you get into a spot that holds fish do you find that they are all about the same size or do they vary for 1lb to 6lb or are they all like 1lb to 2lb. And do you find that smallies and large mouth are differnt when it comes to schooling to size or are they simillar. Scott
  8. Congrads I remember my firts rod. It wasn't the most perfect rod ever but it looked pretty good. People said. You will find out that when you build a rod that you notice every little flaw when you build it and others don't. Just keep and and and take pride in what you do and those mistakes will become fewer and fewer. I agree with ReelMech once you have a system don't go to changing it around it will mess you up. You won't be able to wait and go try it out. You will also find out that you will have more satisfaction fishing with something that you hand made. Good luck and keep up the good work. Scott
  9. This is no lie one of the best days I ever had on the water was the time leading right up to the time I had to get off of the water do to the lighting was to close.( but only for a breif time and we went right back out.) It was during the summer and you could see the thunder heads rolling in. The top water bite was unreal. I can't tell you how many SM that I caught that where over 3 Lb. I have had other days that were good right before a TS but this one time for some reason was unbelievable. Good luck fishing.
  10. Those are some nice fish guys. My LM aren't as impressive LM 4.16 Lb SM 5.89 Lb The smallmouth was during a tourney and got big bass. It was in the spring though. Good luck fishing.
  11. Its only a dirty metal if you don't take off the impurities on the top of the melted lead. And you do that buy just taking a metal latel and scopping it off. As for the weight being the same I will tell you this. There is hardly any difference at most I put them on scale after ward and they are all with in the same tolerance as pure lead is when I use it. So I'm not sure who said they are different weight but it was probable becasue the didn't take off the impurities and babit for the top of the melted lead. This is b/c they have differeent densities so the impuities and babit flots and is a totally different color. Its easy to seperate. Scott
  12. I make my own I you can get the molds at www.do-itmolds.com they seem to be pretty good priced too. If you find them cheaper some were else let me know Ok. Scott
  13. Well I don't know about the junk yard thing but I have been making my own heads for going on 6 years now and all that I do is go down to my local tire factory like Les Schwab and take them a Five gallon bucket and ask if they can just throw the old tire wieghts in to the bucket and I will pay them for it. Ussually I can get a bucket of weights for under $20. These weights work great. Just make sure that you scape the junk off of the top of the lead after you have melted it. By doing this you lead heads will look better and weigh the same. Good luck and I hope that this helps. Scott
  14. I was wondering in your opinion what is the best fish finder under $1000 and why? I'm looking to up grade my fish finder. I have a Humming bird 400T. I was looking at some Lorances and Humming birds with the GPS feature. What do you think. I'm open for sugestions. Thanks
  15. I was wondering in your opinion what is the best fish finder under $800 any why? I'm looking to up grade my fish finder. I have a Humming bird 400T. I was looking at some Lorances and Humming birds with the GPS feature. What do you think. I'm open for sugestions. Thanks
  16. I pour almost all of me jig head and find it very cost effective. The site that I have got all of my molds from is www.do-itmolds.com check them out and see what you think. They have one mold that allows you to put on live in eyes. They look really good. I have found that these heads at certain times of the year like post spawn are killer on smallies. Good luck.
  17. I was wondering if anyone has tried the Titanium guides? If so how are they? How does American Tackle Titanium guides compare to fuji Titanium guides. Thanks for your help Scott
  18. Thats where I am right now with info burn out. Everything you read make you want to think they are the king and tops. That is the way it is with everything though the manufactures want you to think that so you will buy there items. Thats why I put the post on here I thought maybe someone with some more experience than I do would have some devine insight ;D I personaly have used hardloy on almost every rod I have built too. I was just looking to see if there was a majic guide out there. ;D I am building this pole for me. I have build several poles I just am at the point were I want to start doing more than just puting quality wraps on the rod if you know what I mean. Thanks for your help I appreciate it. Any more info would be acepted too. Scott
  19. I have been biulding poles now for 6 years and until recently I haven't put much thought into what components to use. Now I know thats a mistake. So I was hoping that with some help I could get on the right track with what components to use now. I have a 6'8' lamiglas blank 8-15 # line rating and 1/8-5/8 oz It is a moderate action too. So my question is what guides would you chose and why. I thank all of you for your help Scott
  20. I have heard some discussion that hand poured baits are better. Is this the case and if so why are they. Has anyone used them much and if so how do they compare in quality and durability. thanks
  21. this question is for those of you who build rods. I know that the quality of guides that are put on the rod is directly related to the sensitivity of the pole so what guides would you recomend to use on a casting pole that I may want to put fireline on but also will use mono on it too.
