This weekend I'm going to be fishing a mountainous res. What I mean is this is a narrow (200 yrds) at the widest spot the res is 50 miles long and has typical steep banks slow sloping banks and the res is 51% full which is 32 feet low. So no structure is still in the water. The weather has been really warm there for the last week. Temps in the 100's every day and no wind to speak of. What type of places would you look for and what would you guys use to fish an area like this. The water temps are in the high 70's in morning and gets up into the 80's. Help would be great. all I have to say is unbelievable. That is just wacked. I can't imagine what cloud I would be on. All I know is it would be quite abit above 7. That is just great. I'm hitting the water this weekend prefishing for a tourny and this just pumps me up. Thanks for the post. Scott Tight lines.

my personal opinion is that the action of the lipless crank is more important than the color. I have many times been in the same boat and using the same color as two or three other people and I still catch more fish and larger than the rest. I pesonally like to burn and rip it. I think by doing this I get the fish to hit it out of reaction. And a lot of times when you are fishing a reaction bite the color doesn't matter all you have to do is get the bait in their window for striking.

I will have to say if there is going to be a new world record smallie it will have to come from the handford reach area on the columbia river. Some of you are asking why would he say that? The reason is the the exisiting world record looks like it grew up by a nuclear plant. And guess what there happens to be a one right there on the columbia river. That may be the only way that there is going to be a new record smallie ;D ;D ;D ;D RW makes a great point that there doesn't seem to be the stock for a new world record. There are several 7,8 and a few nines I hear about being caught every year but not really that many if any 10's or larger. So with out that brude stock how can one really think that a new WR will be coming any time soon?

I don't use buzz baits here much but with a walk the dog type lure I really prefer a weightless rig such as a senko wacky rigged or a fat ika to follow up a miss strike. I have had greak luck with this style of fishing. Lots of times my larger fish of the day comes this way. Tight lines Scott

There are a few Walleyes being picked up right below Jonday dam. Nothing really to speak of though when it comes to smallies. tight lines Scott

I have a couple of questions about florocarbon. 1) Is the more expensive brands of florocarbon better than lets say berkley vanish? 2)The other question is when using florocarbon is there a differnece in catch rate when using 8# vs. 6# and if so why? I have been told that sometimes when it comes to smallies that the 6# floro will catch more fish but why when floro is suppose to be almost transparent in the water so it doesn't seem like it should mater.

It was in In-Fisherman. The article was a good one. I have tried this only twice though and I will say without success though. I wouldn't rule it out though. I still like the thought of it and will try it again. tight line Scott

I just wanted to comment on the question how big of bass will 6lb catch. Well I started using 6lb yo-zuri this year for steelhead b/c I had such good luck last year for smallies with it and I have landed several cromeheads this year already on the river that has ranged from 10 to 16#'s. My personal oppinion is that the line will do just about anything you want it to as long as you take your time and let your rod do the work. Have patients. Tight Lines Scott

I will tell you something I probably will kick my self later for. I was in a tourney last year and It was getting late in the day and we didn't have much weight. I thought I would try a c-rig with a Gary Y. craw. and let me tell you with in 2 hours we had 0ver 20# of smallies with 5 fish. That was our last tourney of the year and it was great I can't wait to try it this year to see if it was a fluke or what. Tight lines Scott

hey there justin. I love the jerk my self and I couldn't agree with you any more. I like the 128 it may not produce many fish like my rapalas or megabass do but they do produce larger fish I haven't ever caught one under two pounds and I'm not kinding. I have only been fishing them for 2 years now but let me tell you wow. I do have to say I do catch my larger fish on cranks though, but I still do love the jerk Scott Tight Lines

I like to hear from people on this site you all have good ideas and thought. I would have to agree there is no best and that is because it is subject to some personal opinion. I fish loomis a ton and lamiglass. I do have one BPS 80million modulus rod that I really like too though. I have one of the new lamaglass XMG50 series rods and its is just great. But my fave still has to be the IMX and GLX. I have owned some GL3 and GL2 also but in my opinion I think for the price you can get some other rods for around that price range that are better IMO For example: The fenwick's they make a quality rod and are about the same price as the GL3 but are more sensative. JMO Good imput and have a good day Scott

I really like the senkos for smallies. I have had good luck carolina rigging them wacky style in the spring.

I really like to use them on a dropshot rig. Either just normal or sometimes a little wacky stile but instead of dead center rigging it try to put the hook through the first quarter of it. It gives a nice action in the water. Good luck and tight lines

I do like to mark on maps. I like the hard copy maps that you can get at the local dealer on the lake and also the chips you can get to put into your fish finder. What I like to do is use the two in combination. I fish in lots of tournaments in different states and there are several times that I will be on a new body of water and the only knoweldge of it that I have maybe the time of year and normal bass basics. So, what I like to do is take the hard copy of the map before hand, either sitting in the hotel , and with a highlighter I will highlight places on the map that are similar structure. For example I will highlight all breaks in blue and maybe highlight all flats in orange and then points in a different color and so on down the line. The reason is when I'm prefishing and find a patern all that I have to do is look at the hard copy map and see what color fits the situation. And I will have several other places I can hit quickly and see if it pays off. Its just an idea and what I do. It seems to work for me. Good Luck and congrats on the new boat. P.S. I also when I find a patern I will mark in pen on the map lure used water temp and time of year also. Just like it was said before. it all depends the time of year it is. I will use a jerkbait in the spring for a search bait and I do cover a lot of ground. In the late summer early autum. I like the topwater in all conditions, but I fish smallmouth pimaraly though. That will make a difference. Tight lines
