  1. Here is some data from the NOAA Smart Buoys for the Lower Potomac at Point Lookout, and the Upper Potomac at the W.W. Bridge. Look at the scale on the left of the graph. From NOAA: SalinitySalinity is the concentration of salt in the water. CBIBS measures salinity in practical salinity units--PSUs. (Salinity is also available in parts per thousand--ppt.) Salinity levels are a function of the mixing of ocean waters, which contain approximately 32 ppt (parts per thousand) salinity with freshwater from the Bay’s tributaries (< 1 ppt salinity). This is reported as an hourly average. Salinity is an important factor in determining where the Bay’s plants and animals live and in some cases when the animals reproduce or migrate. In any given location, salinity can vary greatly depending upon river flow, being low during high flows and high during droughts. Most of the Bay’s living resources are adapted to these large swings in salinity, but extreme floods or droughts can lead to stressful conditions.
  2. I have seen some "False Color" satellite images of the Chesapeake Bay and Potomac River where you can actually see the salt wedge. Basically a lot depends on the amount of rainfall we get up in the mountains as the salt wedge (brackish water) line moves up and down the river seasonally. I believe generally speaking the southern average limit of fresh water is around Blossom Point MD and the northern limit of brackish water is somewhere around Moss Point MD, above that it's usually considered fresh water. But like I said it all depends on how much rain both the Potomac River watershed and the Susquehanna River watershed receives seasonally. I usually fish from Nanjemoy Creek, MD up to the Key Bridge area of D.C. and have never seen any effects to my motor to worry about flushing my engine.
  3. Are you saying you have friends that have hit banks and banks don't have a problem tossing over 5K to keep it quiet??? My daughter is Vice President and Chief Operations Officer of a financial organization that deals directly with banks across the country. I just read this thread to her and her response was "Dad, do you believe banks are successfully attacked and held ransom that frequently and the media would not get wind of it; they would have to report every successful attack"..... "postings of bank black mail are here-say of urban rumor" "Yes banks receive thousands of attempts, but todays software is strong, networked, and intelligent to profile the attacker...... a world wide network of security groups eventually gain enough information to track attacks to their source" She adds "a much larger threat is the minimum wage individual in a medical office that has unrestricted access to all of your personal data, and gets access to your credit card when you pay your co-pay" She knew that would get my blood boiling.
  4. At thirty acres we're talking about a pond. I started looking along the I-64 corridor between Richmond and Charlottesville and to find a pond that small you have to maintain a "Eye altitude" of 1200 to 1500 feet. There are just too many ponds to count. So we'll need more information. Also, how long ago did you fish this pond? It's very possible a community was built around it.
  5. Have you looked on Google Earth? I found Swift Creek Reservoir, and Sandy River Res.. Both are "U" shaped.
  6. What independently verifiable data do you base your statement on???
  7. In 1975 I believe someone used dead-reckoning and a map to come up with coordinates, I doubt anyone had GPS back then. If I, or someone else, can locate the shoal and get a good solid GPS fix, then that info should go to Navionics as a location update. I would also like to verify the Google Earth photo.
  8. Yes, i think we beat this dead horse enough. I wish my son would read some of this, I think he would roll his eyes at us; he just left Microsoft after fifteen years for FB to rework FB's core code. A parent can only do so much.....
  9. "I don't know warden, why don't you tell me!"
  10. The tax man cometh At the end of the tax year, the IRS office sent an inspector to audit the books of a local hospital While the IRS agent was checking the books, he turned to the CFO of the hospital and said,?"I notice you buy a lot of bandages. What do you do with the end of the roll when there's too little left to be of any use? "Good question ," noted the CFO. "We save them up and send them back to the bandage company and every once in a while, they send us a free roll." "Oh," replied the auditor, somewhat disappointed that his unusual question had a practical answer. But on he went, in his obnoxious way; "What about all these plaster purchases? What do you do with what's left over after setting a cast on a patient? "Ah, yes," replied the CFO, realizing that the inspector was trying to trap him with an unanswerable question. "We save it and send it back to the manufacturer and every so often they will send us a free bag of plaster." "I see," replied the auditor, thinking hard about how he could fluster the know-it-all CFO. "Well," he went on, "What do you do with all the remains from the circumcision surgeries?" "Here, too, we do not waste," answered the CFO. "What we do is save all the little foreskins and send them to the IRS office, and about once a year they send us a complete pr__k."
  11. Around here ( the Wash D.C. suburbs) people will pass a two lane backup by using both the right and left solder and then force their way back into line by pushing the nose of their car/SUV in front of you and daring you to hit them. People around here are some of most rudest drivers in the country, I think that is by a AAA study or something I read at one point.
  12. You didn't say what type of boat your using so it's difficult to answer your question. But where to place a single transducer/depth finder (DF) depends on how and where you fish. Such as, do you need to know the depth as you navigate to your fishing spot? Do you search for structure/cover while driving your boat from the rear or at the console, etc. Or do you fish deep water humps in the lake and need the depth finder and TM to keep you on the hump. If you fish shallow shoreline or weeds with a TM, your usually to shallow for the DF to be of much use; the area the transducer cone covers is too small to see much and the DF may not even read the depth correctly. suggestion, only you know your fishing style. So try a temporary setup both ways and see what works best for you.
  13. Crushing a coax to short the conductors is a catastrophic pinch, and yes that will destroy the cable. I can go into the physics of coax cables if you want, but the short answer is - do nothing that will deform a coax, i.e. flatten it, kink it, etc. The white inner plastic core around the center conductor is called the dielectric and it's thickness is engineered for the frequency range the cable will carry; if you do anything to reduce that thickness you change the response of the cable and degrade it. If you look at my photo you'll see that I used electrical tape on the TM shaft and ty-wraps on the TM's mounting; you'll also notice I have the ty-wrap's buckle (or keeper) on the cable and soft-bends where-ever the cable flexes. The coax can cross the TM's power cable at right angles without picking up enough RFI to affect your electronics. (see where my power cable comes out of my deck and the coax crosses it)
  14. I think this is waht Bladesmith is talking about. Keep your transducer cable as far away from your TM power cable as possible. Also, don't forget to protect your transducer.
  15. But how many times have you heard of someone getting fired or not being hired because of posting an opinion or a photo on FB. And haven't we always been told that the more popular sites are targeted more by hackers. IMHO, I really don't think we need it for BR, if people can get to FB.com they can just as easy get to BassResource.com where we have more control. BTW, how do the Mods moderate FB.
  16. IMHO the NS is here to stay and it's only a matter of time before someone just for kicks, or something trying to get dinner, spreads them to other lakes and rivers in our area. Based on the history of Anglers spreading fish, like the white bass, to their favorite lake or pond, I worry more about the someone rather than the something. We know know the NS are spreading throughout the Chesapeake Bay region on their own and their more adaptable to the salinity than first thought; so far the biologist have underestimated the NS's ability to adapt, so given time I bet they will spread along the inter-coastal water way to populate the east coast on their own. So gear up people, the NS will replace the LMB as the sport fish to go after. Who wants to start the new Northern Snakehead Anglers Society (N.S.A.S.) and publish a new mag called "Snakehead Masters"
  17. Two things of note from the report. Review references for additional information; and note the dates of the references as some are out of date by new studies, i.e. NS movement to new territory is limited to heavy rain periods has been found inaccurate. Also I was referencing in part - "In habitats of co-occurrence, predation can influence survivorship of juvenile largemouth bass and predation threat may negatively influence growth (Gilliam and Fraser 1987). If growth of age-0 largemouth bass is inhibited by northern snakehead, then odds of [LMB] survivorship may be lower and recruitment negatively influenced. While not studied here, competition between adult northern snakehead and adult largemouth bass for limited resources may also negatively affect recruitment of bass if resources limit their gonad development or nest building behavior. " Bottom line for Marylanders - "There are no known natural predators for large northern snakehead in North America, aside from humans and possibly some birds of prey. Thus, control measures aimed at human removal of northern snakehead from all habitats, particularly newly colonized ones, is strongly encouraged for continued protection of aquatic ecosystems."
  18. I have it saved on my computer. The paper is titled "Will the Expansion of Northern Snakehead Negatively Affect the Fishery for Largemouth Bass in the Potomac River (Chesapeake Bay)? Joseph W. Love & Joshua J. Newhard Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Inland Fisheries, 580 Taylor Avenue, Annapolis, Maryland, 21401, USA U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Maryland Fishery Resources Office, 177 Admiral Cochrane Drive, Annapolis, Maryland, 21401, USA Version of record first published: 10 Sep 2012." It's in a PDF format, can we post PDF's here? This is a long scientific paper so it will take some time to read and comprehend.
  19. I recently read a study that found as the multiple yearly spawning increases the population in a given area, the preferred forage species in that area declines and their preferences of forage expands to other available fish species. We truly do not yet understand what the long term effects of the fish will be, but computer models based on current data do not look good. Plus they are finding the NS is more adaptable than first thought, with the help of well meaning anglers looking for a thrill they could spread throughout the country. B.A.S.S. could be having NS and Asian Carp tournaments rather than Bass Tournaments in the next decade or two.
  20. I wouldn't be caught without a good anchor and 100' of line, no tellin' where you could end up if your TM & engine failed like it did on me. I still can't figure out what Deity I PO'ed to have both motors fail at the same time.
  21. The shoal is shown on Navionics Navplanner 2 as "Shoal to 3 FT REP 1975". I believe I found it on the Google Earth photo, but I have not been able to verify it yet but plan to when I get the boat back. The GE photo could also just be a "photo aberration", I don't know.
  22. Are you referring to the fact of "equal & opposite reaction"?? If the ejection seat goes up - the back of the boat goes down - and you could sink the boat.....
  23. I've used FB for years to keep touch with friends & family scattered around the world, and even tough my son works for FB I don't care for the GUI functionally of my page and some other things about FB; therefore I am very cautious about what I put on FB. But with that said, I'm on FB many times a day, every day. IMHO, As for BR on FB, I have little or no use for it. To me it's more about direct and indirect advertising with some articles and a only few member posts. I feel it's less about or for the members to freely communicate. To me, you can't beat BassResource.com
  24. Where was this?
  25. You'll need to use your imagination and play with the size and shape until you settle on something that you like. EDIT: I think my answer here goes better with post 24.
