  1. A shorter rod would allow you to work the bait easier. And if your not using a moderate action rod i would suggest a line that stretches, such as mono, flouro, or co-polymer.
  2. Will do! When I go to my dads il post a pic of the first build.
  3. Ok, when spring comes and the pike come into the shallow water, me and my brother love to go out early in the morning and catch them. Almost all of our fishing is fly fishing and we are always tying our own flies. I just wanted to know what your most successful pike flies are and what you do for spring pike. Thanks!
  4. I wast using a motorized drier, i had to do it by hand. I guess i have learned now though. So if i have it right, multiple thin coats, warm room temperature, and get a motorized rod drier? thanks again.
  5. I would start with a cheap pac bay rod building kit to get some practice on. I got one on cabelas for $30 bucks and now i feel more confident that i will be able to make a better more expensive rod on my next build.
  6. Great advice, thanks guys!
  7. The other day i finished building my first rod, and used a two part epoxy finish. I did the first coat, turning it and letting it sit for a day, then did the second coat, turning it every 5 minutes. When i finished it seemed like there was maybe too much epoxy on the rod, because it was uneaven on the wraps, what did i do wrong?
  8. I have a bps nitro rod and johnny morris reel, i was happy with the combo, im selling it, but thats just because i want spinning gear.
  9. I like to try new things, but i still stick to some of the things i love. Shimano reels, still have a few other brands, havent found a rod maker yet though, i dont have two of any rod other than 2 berkley cherrywoods.
  10. Great advice Rooster, thanks to all of you!
  11. I always close my bail by hand, and sorry but whats that mean? not a ton of slack?
  12. When using jerbaits on my spinning gear, i get an occasional tangle in my line, and i think it may be because when i reel in the slack like it isnt tight around the spool. Is there any way to fix or prevent this?
  13. For me it depends on what im doing, if im on a boat, i like a longer rod, when im hiking through the woods, i like a shorter rod. If im fishing from shore, a 6'6 is great for most things, the 7' is better when i wanna use frogs, and a 6'3 is better for me when i wanna use jerk baits.
  14. This case wasnt on my own gear, but both of my brothers, we fish a lot but its braid, which lasts much longer than any other line. In both cases Light and Heavy pound Spiderwire braid, it was very flat, and the strainds in the braid, seemed to seperate and fall apart, I have used Spiderwire mono and hated it, by now im just a fan of the brand all together. I have PP on my baitcaster and a spinning reel or two, on the higher pound PP braid it seems to get a little less smooth, but it still worked great, maybe the new PP they have out has that fixed. This year i got into suffix 832 and i love it, havent had any problems with it, it fades a pretty good amount but so does the PP. The choice is yours, with either PP or 832 you will be happy.
  15. I like my Suffix 832, havent had much trouble with PP, i did not like spider wire at all when i had it, it came apart too much. I would make sure to back it with some mono or the braid will slip, even if you just use enough mono to barely take up any space in the spool.
  16. What length would balance out a 4000 size shimano reel? and what power would you get?
  17. When i was that age my dad bought me a Berkely Cherrywood Graphite and a Shimano Sienna and i still use it today.
  18. Okay, so my father makes fun of my uncles in believing in the "genetically proven" banjo minnow. I always found it quite funny, and never took the lure seriously until today.. Brought in 4 nice size bass today when i couldnt figure out what to use and couldnt seem to get a fish. I now respect the little guy, does anyone else use this "As Seen On TV" lure?
  19. Well if youd like to get rid of one of the ones sitting there to someone who would put it to good use...
  20. you guys are great! I was thinking a little but higher ratio on the reel though.
  21. ok cool thanks, yeah if you could find me a cronarch for 125 id probably get it.
  22. 150/160 is a little out of the price range right now, im thinking about 40 dollars cheaper.
  23. Spool it up once and your good. No need to change every year like Mono.
