  1. well, maybe ill have to do some goose hunting later on... wait, i dont even have a hunting license in this state.. best to wait until a meet the requirements of a resident of the state first.. i had to get an out of state fishing license for $20 because i havent even been living here a month yet.. i used to live in new york state, and theres a lot of wildlife here i just never had to deal with there.. ive seen more wild animals after moving to wisconsin in just a few weeks than i did in 10 years living in even a rural part of NY state
  2. then i guess i should buy or make a divided organizer for it so i wont have to worry about that, itll keep them separate, i can only seem to find them for 5.56mm ammo cans though.. not sure of the dimensions of these, but im not sure it would make a good tackle box. maybe though
  3. mashing down barbs isnt going to solve the other problem im having with trebles though, the abundance of weeds.. see the lake im fishing in is partially drained because theyre doing dam work on the river that feeds it.. because of this the top of the grass that covers the bottom is exposed on the surface of the water meaning complete ceiling to floor weeds and once you get one weed on a spoon it becomes useless, so im likely to get more bites without the treble hooks due to the lures working properly, and not dragging 2 feet of weeds behind them
  4. aah.. you know, that makes a lot of sense now considering another clue on the beach i thought was unrelated.. i found a few white down feathers here and there.. and i looked up a photo of goose droppings and that does look like what i seen, explains the feathers too... d**n flock of gease must have landed on the shore when i wasnt there.. nasty things
  5. because i can get the ammo cans really cheap, theyre easier to drill, weld, etc for adding components id need to make them quickly detachable without tools, and they look cooler
  6. the lake where i fish rose a bit during the raining we had the last couple days, then the level dropped again and today, all along the shore that was flooded are piles of turds.. and they seem to be everywhere... about as big around as a pencil and i have absolutely no idea what would do this.. i didnt take photos of them for two reasons.. i didnt have anything to take photos with, and no one wants to see them.. but from the description what would do this?.. i just recently noticed there are turtles in the lake, would they have done this?.. or is it likely a land animal of some sort that did it when the water was low?
  7. ive decided im going to get rid of all my treble hooks..there are size limits on the fish i catch and treble hooks can be pretty destructive to a fishes mouth.. something i dont want to risk on fish too small to keep, and i mostly catch and release anyway.. id rather risk losing one here or there than to risk permanently damaging a fishes mouth thats to be thrown back anyway... i caught a pike a couple weeks ago, this one i was actually going to fillet and keep anyway, luckily, but all three points went into the corner of its mouth in a way they had to be cut out... so for ethical reasons of catch and release, and for reasons of WAY too many weeds for trebles, ive decided to just remove them from all of my lures and install single, weedless hooks... has anyone else made this decision too, or am i the only one?
  8. hey.. i had this idea of making a tackle box out of a military surplus ammo can.. im not sure how id do this, but one idea is that people sell sectioned organizers in layers for ammo cans of various sizes.. so i had the idea of buying a 50bmg or 20mm ammo can and the organizers to fashion a tackle box heres an example for 5.56mm cans http://www.amazon.com/MTM-Ammo-Can-Organizer-Black/dp/B0074024OO what gave me this idea.. is ive been thinking of buying a new motorcycle.. sort of an all purpose super reliable dual sport i can do everything with.. like an old yamaha XT500, or honda XL500 (you get the idea) and fashion a bracket to mount ammo cans as saddlebags.. BUT i want the ammo cans to be removable so that i can pack a couple in a "bugout bag" fashion, or use one as a tackle box that i could hook onto the bracket and go fishing, get to where im going and remove the ammo can to to take with me as my tackle box so.. what do you guys think of this idea?.. of course, if im using a motorcycle to get to my fishing spots im going to have to buy a four piece rod and fashion a leather holster to stick it into.. kind of like the old rifle holsters the WWII motorcycles had on them
  9. i left my tackle box in another state when i moved.. its in a storage unit and ill be collecting all of that gear in a few weeks, but ive just been loosely tossing all of my tackle into the glove box in my truck.. im just glad i dont fish with worms
  10. this lake ive been fishing in is partially drained due to dam work being done on the river that feeds it.. because of this, most the vegetation that grows on the bottom is exposed to the surface which means thick weeds from top to bottom... i mostly just have luck with texas rigged worms but im looking for other solutions to try, perhaps top water, but im willing to try anything that isnt going to snag on these weeds.. so im looking for lure options that can be fished IN thick weeds successfully.. besides the worms i already use on another note, im replacing all the treble hooks on my lures with weedless single hooks so that HOPEFULLY i can actually use my spoons, because once a small weed gets hooked on the spoon it wont spin properly and becomes useless, which is almost every single time i cast... also, id like to target fish like walleye, lake trout, and pike as well as bass, so a good solution for each of these species would be appreciated
  11. at some point im just going to build an 18650 based flashlight, probably using a solarforce l2 host (surefire 6P alternative), and get a hat clip for it with a red drop-in LED module in my tackle box for red light... as i like being able to make one tool perform multiple tasks such as this, but for now the headlamps will suffice
  12. actually, fishing today, as im learning to cast left handed as well as previously, i could only cast overhand right handed, and side arm right handed away from my body, ive decided to learn how to cast left handed too as im fishing around bushes where this is the only way i can cast.. its a good thing to learn as well.. but anyway, i shanked a cast and instead of going where i was aiming, it went probably 45 degrees to the right and smacked into a big concrete pillar holding the bridge up.. i stopped it before it backlashed though.. lucky me... im getting pretty good at detecking a shank and aborting almost immediately with my thumb in fact.. one time i caught a bush and was able to abort the cast in time before it backlashed kind of off topic, but perhaps one of you could help me with this.. when i cast really hard.. and i mean really gun my line out there to an incredibly distance, my line actually loosens on the spool like its going to backlash, but then straightens out before hitting the water... as it hits the water with a clean tight spool, all should be fine but seeing the line pull up into a bunch mid-flight worries me..is one of my brake/tension settings off? if so, which one, and should it be looser or tighter?
  13. well, as stated im going to keep the C4 i have now, ive actually become quite used to the way im holding it in my left hand, if i got a left hand retrieve id have to grab it with the left and then again with the right to change grip.. so keeping a right hand retrieve would be best afterall, and with my new left handed grip it allows me to place my thumb on the spool quicker as ive learned to do that during hook sets
  14. no, i actually like that new color scheme, thats not blue and gold.. the frame is black and silver, the spool and crank look more of a bronze or dull brass color.. i like it, that shiny gold everywhere is kinda cheesy looking, but i really like that restyle on another note.. i think im going to stick with a right hand retrieve.. ive learned a new way to hold my reel, which i guess is what people do when they "palm" a reel.. basically, i cast, and before my line even hits the water i place the rod in my left hand with the trigger hook part of the rod between my middle and ring finger, middle finger runs the along the edge of the rod, and my index finger and thumb on the reel.. keep in mind i am using a 5600C4 round baitcaster, and i find it to be quite comfortable, so im just going to keep what i have for now im even fixing a habbit i have with my thumb where ive accidently been slipping it off the reel and hitting the thumb bar on a hook set and backlashing.. but now i put my thumb on the spool when i set a hook and now that handling this reel is becoming second nature, i dont think im going to change it.. i like it
  15. i actually got a response back from an abu garcia representative on the 5600WS.. and they told me this is a walmart exclusive that is actually a 5600C4 with the only difference over the standard 5600C4 being that wiffle spool, and that in fact, if i wanted a full 5600C4 i could just buy the C4 spool and install it.. but im fine, i like my reel the way it is and im quite happy with it, and now that i know its a 5600C4 i can look into some mods for it in terms of gears, bearings... i believe this thing reels in 30" per turn... wasnt sure how i would like the high speed reels but after getting used to them i think i prefer them, i can reel a spoon in faster if im going for a pike as i can be certain a pike can swim 30" faster than i can turn the spool
  16. i actually opted to order some headlamps.. just to avoid getting a product i dont like, i ordered both the 7-LED energizer headlamp, and the rayovac version for the same price.. both produce similar light, use the same batteries, but this way i can see which is better and if one breaks ill know to buy another one like the one that didnt
  17. now i know why some people carry dental picks when they go fishing.. would be so much easier to loosen a backlash.. and eddie.. i read your post about snagging a bush behind you when casting.. and i was thinking geeze.. id never do that.. and today i did just that. HUGE backlash.. didnt take me long at all to loosen it up though and i got it taken care of.. but it was frustrating..
  18. then ill order a couple of the lights that go on the hat.. then i'll have an excuse to buy a new hat.. i actually dont even own a hat because no one sells hats so large.. sad, isnt it?, ill get one off amazon
  19. im actually concerned with the headlamps due to the size of my head to be honest.. id wear a size 8+ or XXXL size hat.. i have a HUGE head.. the brim mounted light might be the best bet, then i can be sure it fits, and adjust the cap accordingly to be sure the lamp points in the right direction.. i read some are incapable of stretching that large and if they do, the wires inside dont
  20. well i cant really sit in complete darkness.. been hearing snakes around where i fish and it takes a bit of walking to get to it.. maybe that cap light posted above would be best.. i can simply attach it to a baseball cap and carry an extra flashlight for other stuff
  21. maybe.. ive been looking at those nebo redline flashlights though.. was thinking of getting a red filter for it, and a clip mount i could clip it to the brim of a baseball cap with.. it has multiple brightness settings and would allow me to use this light for other things outside of fishing too.. so im really thinking of going that route
  22. those rayovac lights dont look very bright at all
  23. ok.. im going to take this discussion into two different paths.. first, i do want a headlamp. unfortunately, i have about $50 in total to spend on lighting, and i need to get atleast 2 headlamps, preferably a third as people fish with me.. so they need to be inexpensive.. i notice some 300 lumen cree headlamps, one has a red filter, for the ones that dont i imagine i could just fabricate one myself to make a red light.. so im looking for low cost solutions to this the second thing im looking for, though this can be a completely different topic, is a new flashlight.. something i can find a lot of add-ons and accessories to.. the maglite produces only 84 lumens.. id like something around 300 or more, something really bright... and preferably takes AAs, definitely no D-cell flashlights.. i can always get a headband mount (with a loop for the flashlight) or a ball cap mount if i wanted to use it as a headlamp, but i have other things id like a good reliable light for too
  24. im going to start doing a lot of my fishing at night, especially for species like walleye, catfish, bullhead, etc... it turns out though that bugs absolutely love white light.. but the fish targeted tend to flee from it, and that red light has almost no effect on either fish, or bugs, but still offers light i dont think i want to go with a lantern to be honest, theyre expensive, cost a lot to fuel in comparison, and theyre inefficient in the sense that all the light produced, most of it are lighting up areas youre not even looking so.. i got to thinking about headlamps and i was wondering how good of an idea it would be to take an LED flashlight, red diffuser, mounted to a headband to use for fishing? what solution would you suggest for this purpose?
