I know that I can't be the only local guy who fishes the Ross Barnett Reservoir. There are quite a few Mississippians here, and quite a few in central MS & Jackson. So, who fishes it and where do you fish? I have this one little spot, and a buddy of mine is trying to get me out to Pelahatchie Bay (I live in ridgeland so I fish my 'side' primarily), but he's had an issue with gators in his kayak and I just don't know about all that. Anywho, post up if you hit The Rez!

A friend of mine is looking at getting her own rod & reel combo. She's been using my stuff and prefers my baitcasting setup over my spinning stuff. Anyway, we hit walmart and Academy today and looked around. She was decided on a cheapo shakespeare baitcaster that walmart had for $29 but when we went to Academy we found a pinnacle combo for $59 that she liked a lot. Anyway, I started looking online and found some stuff they have on sale. The best fit for her is Abu Garcia's Blue Max combo. It's a 6'6" 1 piece medium heavy rod coupled with their blue max baitcaster. I didn't get to put my hands on it, but with a 6.2:1 retrieve ratio and a spool that can hold 160yds of 12lb line it seems like a GREAT deal for $39.99 (until sunday when the sale stuff changes). Yes, we have a bass pro, but it's a drive and neither she nor I feel like going out there to shop. Academy is right around the corner for both of us, so please don't tell me "There's better stuff here or there" ..I already know that. So, I'm looking for experienced opinions on this combo, or this reel itself. How do you (whichever member uses it) like it? Not a problem. I've been condemned for far less... Hah! I will admit I know far more about ballistics and firearms than fishing.... Both are self taught, one just started nearly 20 years sooner than the other. Also, 180 + grain .40 s&w are sub sonic, incase you were curious. It's difficult to find sub sonic 9mm off the shelf. It's around, but most of it a specialty market. Oh, and while I'm at it... .357 Sig or now called '.357 Auto' is far too fast/potent to be used as a self defense round. The only government agency I know of who uses it is the Mississippi Highway Patrol and I still don't understand why if you apply my earlier statement about collateral damage to terminal ballistics and velocity...

I hate this 'debate' (this is not an argument, yet). I really do. Although, I feel I now need to present the facts. In my opinion, no caliber is superior to any other. They all a up's and down's. As an army veteran, I can guarantee you I would rather tote around my 240Bravo any day over an M249. Fire rate be damned. The .308 is far superior to the .223 on the battle field, ballistically speaking. But that's at a stand point of penetration and kinetic energy at range. The debate is simple. A .45 Auto is often sub sonic out of the muzzle, especially from a shorter barreled weapon like my XD or a Glock 30. The advantage here is lessening collateral damage. When I chose the caliber I did, it wasn't because it was bigger than any other, or because it was synonymous with 'lore'... It was because it's a sub sonic round, carrying with it over 600 ft/lb of kinetic energy at 25 yards, but less than 900fps. To me, this is important. In the event of an actual defensive situation, You HOPE all of your rounds land on-target. In the event that a round passes through a small patch of fatty flesh, the velocity carried by the round after passing through is drastically decreased. Should be be in a home, and a round be discharged through your target at close-range, the round will then stop in the wall of your home. I rest easier knowing that should I ever have to discharge my weapon in my suburban neighborhood my neighbors and their children are not at risk to become 'collateral damage'. There is no 'fire superiority' here... just logic. I'd rather not kill anyone other than the intended target, and I believe I'm a step closer to preventing that by using a sub-sonic caliber. The improved clinch is the only knot I learned for tying lures and I can average a tie on in less than a minute now... sometimes braided line takes a bit longer but mono makes it easy...

Thanks, but I repaired that issue with JB Weld quick a week or two ago. That eyelet is smoother than a well lotioned pole dancer.. The screw up happened when my line got snagged and I yanked it out of the cover, really messing everything up... I guess you'd call it 'user error'.

I'm a sucker for the old colt anaconda's... there's just something about .44 magnum that fascinates me. I've been aiming my next purchase at a Taurus M444 ultra light snubby for quite some time. It seems that every time I have the $600 in coin to rub together I spend it on something I need over what I want ... I tell ya', these 'first-world-problems' are going to be death of me... Hah!

I've been using my 7' medium spinning Ugly Stik for it, but I also run an old Medium/Heavy Zebco red-rhino spincast rod with an even older Abu Garcia 5500C baitcasting reel. Both of which are stout combos when the bass hits the lure and dives down. The 7' rod sets the hook well while maintaining lots of action/flex for the fish to dive ( My drag is set HIGH), and the zebco/abu rod is just a powerhouse for heavy powered retrieves.

I have this Shakespeare Stampede ST30A reel that I absolutely love. It's got the E-Z cast trigger on it, 5.2:1 retrieve ratio and is an absolute beast when coupled with my Berkley IM6 Lightning Rod. The specs: 6lbs @ 185yds, 8lbs @ 145yds, & 10lbs @ 120yds. The rod: Berkley 6' Lightning Rod Medium/Light spinning (my tiny quantum is currently rigged up) Anyway, I had a pretty bad tangle while fishing yesterday and lost a LOT of line from my stampede reel. I hated it because now I only have about 50-60' of line around the spool and I cast about 75-80' normally with ease. I don't know what kind of line I have on it now, but it's small and breaks around 8lb. It doesn't have very good abrasion resistance, as I noticed when a bad eyelet chewed up the line and cost me a nice spinner bait. This combination has been a REAL winner for me with 1/8oz, 1/4oz, and 3/8oz lures. It's got an amazing cast with very little effort and a fantastic retrieve rate. Not to mention it's actually quite a strong, potent, little reel... So, experts of angling... what do you advise for this? I'm open to all suggestions, braid, mono, flourocarbon... (a buddy of mine keeps telling me to run Berkley 6 or 8lb Fireline, and I have to admit, I've been considering it for the cast-ability)

Preposterous!!! .45 ACP is superior to all others, and I refuse to believe otherwise! ...lol In all reality, I want a .44 Mag snubby for carry, I wouldn't mind having a .40 or 10mm either...

What are you running ammunition-wise, Keeper? I've never understood people who depend on 9mm as their primary carry weapon.... So I am intrigued when I come across someone who does. I'd say I am 'more than interested' in what you're running for SD ammo. I run winchester Bonded PDX-1 230's these days, but I have run Hornady XTP & FTP +P loads, and Federal Hydra-Shok's... I've been on the 'hunt' for some Federal HST's for quite a while but no one retails them, and gunshows never have them. They are apparently sold to the LEO community only, although they are not considered illegal for civilian ownership or use...

As a side note, your comment about a a bow thruster and improved anchor made me think of something else entirely. As a metal worker I am already working in cad to design something I can make at home that will fit/work with/on the canoe. I will probably end up using either PVC or aluminum. If aluminum, I may end up using that spring loaded brass push buttons that are so commonly seen in medical equipment like walkers and crutches. Anyway, just a thought.... I've noticed some slight movement, and rotation when anchored, this seems to be the best solution I could come up. ****Edit*** No sense in making one.... I don't own a bass boat, or a john-boat. So I don't have the luxury of powering off into the depth of my local lake to go hunting for the biggest & finest bass.... I DO on the other hand, have an old Mohawk canoe.... She's a two seater fiberglass deal that holds everything I need for a full day of fishing, with room for more stuff, or another person and some of their stuff! It's fun, I've enjoyed it these last few days but have found that the area of which I've been fishing is only 3-4' deep, max. And there are some areas that are 2-3' deep. The exception to this is the boating channel.... That's 8-14' deep, I just really have no way of knowing. anyway, Do any of you guys fish from canoes or kayaks? How do you like it? I haven't hooked anything big enough to drag me around yet, not to mention that I'm using a home-made anchor so I doubt I'd be drug around anyway...

I'm no expert, but LunkerLust seems to have a good point. Y'all can say what you want, but I swear by my Ugly Stik... it's been a fantastic rod for me, plenty powerful at 7' (spinning) for just about anything I want to do with it. I run an old Shimano TX1200 rear drag spinner with big gauge 20lb test mono line and the drag set to where I can barely spin the spool by thumb... I've YET to lose a fish to any under-water-hazards with this combo. I also pull the fish out of the water on hook set. Even some larger 4-5lb bass come flip-flopping out of the water... Now, if you're interested in a baitcaster? I won't recommend any of these low-pro deals, I will tell you that there are some REALLY good deals on ebay for Daiwa Millionaire, older Shimano calcutta style reels, and Abu Garcia 5500-7000's. I mean like sub $75 prices on all of these. I doubt you will run into any issues with any of those reels. Also... the Ugly stick comes in a 7' and 7'6" casting versions available at your local walmart or academy for $29.99. I'm sure Bass Pro would carry them too... anyway, Just my two cents.

How do you like the tracker? I couldn't get past the 5 round .44 mag and lost interest in it, although I hear it's a wonderful hog leg!! Oh, and the first time I had range-time with an PX4 I just about had to change trousers. The PX4 has a de-cocker integrated into it's safety, and when you safety the weapon the hammer falls with the same force as it does when you squeeze the trigger.... it was a nice firing gun, comfortable and all to shoot, but Good lord that was butt-clincher. When you say 'extended mag' I'm curious what you mean. I'm not up & up on Delaware's gun laws.... Are you limited to a specific magazine capacity like DC & Cali? I recall the G17 having a 17 round mag capacity to start with... Cute... You know, at least 6 other people have said the same thing about that picture? It's a really old photo of the XD, and my finger is NOT on the trigger, but for some reason, the way I have my finger set on the guard, it looks like it... Funny photo magic....

Absolutely positive it wasn't. This thing looked more like a small mouth bass. There were no whiskers on it. The mouth was tiny... It's top (dorsal?) fin had a large, and small portion to it. It looked like this... but there was no red?
