Would You Stop Fishing Because Of The West Nile Virus?
just started fishing recently and the first time i went out the mosquitos destroyed my arms and legs. ok...no biggie. the next time i go out i decide to spray my arms and legs. the mosquitos then decided to tear up my neck instead. the time after that i sprayed my neck as well. that didnt stop the mosquitos. the just bit up my back through my shirt. i swear i look like i have smallpox or something. i cant seem to win here but no....i wont stop fishing. im having way too much fun.

Fish Jumping/breaching The Surface
whenever i go to my local lake i always see lots of silver colored fish jumping about 20 yards beyond my casting range. not sure what they are but theyre good sized. this guy i work with said theyre probably carp. sometimes i see bass swirl to the surface to grab something but i wouldnt really say they're juming. this one time i kept hearing huge splashes under the small bridge i was fishing off of. tried casting towarads it with no luck. 10 minutes later i finally see what it was. turned out to be a beaver. would have had fun trying to get a hook out of that mouth. the other day i saw 2 big trout leisurely swimming just a foot or 2 below the surface popping their heads up here and there to grab a bug. im not really sure what to use to catch trout but they wouldnt touch my plastic worm. if i had a net i could have tried to just dip them. probably wouldnt have worked but they were right there.

New To The Forum And New To Fishing
thanks everyone. darren- kayak sounds cool. theres some really weedy areas further out on my lake with lots of stumps and sunken logs. seems like a kayak would be good for getting up in there. daddyodo- love your picture. rodney dangerfield is awesome and caddyshack is a great movie.

Anyone Use The 'scum Frog' Popper?
i just tried mine for the first time this morning. it was awesome! it was my frist time fishing this type of lure and it was really cool watching the bass hit it. i got like 5 or 6 strikes in 30-45 minutes. only problem is i only got one hook-up and that one ended up throwing the hook. being that im a newbie, my hookset probably leaves much to be desired. i tried waiting 2 seconds before setting like it said on the package but i just kept pulling it out of the fishes mouth. is the 2-second count enough or should i wait til i feel the weight of the fish?

Whats Wrong With My Lake?
thats actually just what i did. i got several strikes and hooked one and pulled it all the way but it threw the hook just as it broke the surface. it was a big one too . i think i need to work on my hookset.

Whats Wrong With My Lake?
sorry if this is a dumb question but im new to fishing. so this morning i went out to the lake that ive been going to all ready to catch some fish but when i got there i noticed a layer of, i dunno, i guess youd call it scum or muck or something like that. dunno what it was but it was gross. it was mostly around the edges where the water met the weeds (which of course is right where im trying to catch my bass from). i tried fishing anyway but didnt even get a bite. just succeded in gunking up my line. what is this stuff? why is it there? does it affect the fising? usually when i go the water is clean and theres lots of signs of life (bait fish splashing, bass moving around in the weeds, lots of turtles and even a beaver or 2). but this time there was nothing. just scummy water with lots of bugs all over the water. dunno if the weather could have something to do with it or not. we had a few good thunderstorms last week and the humidity has been crazy. the lake itself is about 20 acres and 5-7 feet deep with thick weeds all around the banks. so im just trying to figure out what the deal is with my lake and whether it would be worth going out again tomorrow? or should i wait a while and see if it clears up?
