  1. I ordered some jigs as well. can't beat a buck for something that will get lost and seems quality is good enough to learn a jig. First time ordering from overstock, are they slow shippers? ordered on Saturday and order is still in process. don't need them in a hurry and am sure they will get here. but can't wait to see how they do. just seems slow to me.
  2. I think it is supposed to catch fish
  3. Just found your thread. I'm definitely following this. I started reading Mr Murphy's book a few months back so I'm very interested to hear how apply his method works out for you. Being a beginning bass fisherman I'd be happy to consistently catch any size bass at this point. Best of luck to you AJay.
  4. My brother and I got our first boat recently and have taken it out twice. It's a 14ft aluminum semi v with a 35lb minn kota. We have one of those portable battery operated fish finders, Eagle Eye is the brand i think. But it seems to be most useful as a depth finder. So, for now we are without electronics. Electronics will be our first upgrade when we can followed by a motor. Our setup is very basic and simple. Now that we have learned (sorta) to tow, launch, trailer, and maneuver the vessel in the water, we have to relearn how to fish from it having bank fished almost exclusively. We went out this morning and started casting plastics, jigs, and frogs to the trees and brush along the shoreline to anything that looked like it might hold bass. Did this for a few hours. Felt like there were curious fish at times but no takers. Lots of active bluegill. Tried drop shotting and cranks in deeper water before we left. My brother got a nice rainbow on a fat chartreuse crankbait, but no bass today. My game plan today was to fish visible cover. Started with the topwater frog into reeds, brush. Then jigs and other plastics into the same cover and towards the dike/rocky bank. none of this more than 10ft deep, slightly stained water. vegetation along the bottom. Temps have been in the 40's at night/60s day lately. Storm passed a few days ago. I'd like to blame it on the weather, but that won't help me next time. I've read alot on here over the winter and thought I had learned alot, but I'm finding its hard to put what i've learned into action. However, I did learn today that controlled casts are more important on a boat than distance like bank fishing. lol How should I approach my next outing? What did I do wrong? What didn't I do?
  5. I think i need to buy one, super deal anyway. but i already have two med spinning setups. what is a good use(s) for a med 7' bait cast vendetta?
  6. Im in too. Utah record is 10lb 2oz and im reading Bill Murphy. Sounds like some fun!
  7. Learn how to fish from a boat (just got 14ft aluminum) Become skilled with my baitcaster Put what i read here and Bill Murphy's book to use. Know what lure to use and use less guessing. "well i think this might work" Jig it up
  8. Ordered my copy few days ago. Can't wait for it to arrive. Im hoping at the very least I can learn bass behavior and apply that to choose correct bait/techniques to catch more fish. Bigger fish would be awesome, but to consistently catch more fish is equally desired.
  9. Yes, currently we are only using the ranger to tow the 14 aluminum boat. plug on the trailer is a 7 pin i believe, i have a pic, link below. This is the trailer connector. It looks like its in good shape, don't want to replace this unless i have to. The receptacle on the ranger is a smaller 4 pin connection, I believe. which is corroded and needs replacement. I would like to replace the corroded ranger 4 pin with a 7 pin receptacle to match what is currently on the trailer. If I can maintain the setup to charge the battery I'd like to do that. So long as it isn't dangerous or cause more problems later on. Good plan or not?

  11. Got a 14ft Starcraft semi v with trailer and minn kota 35lb trolling motor. And have a 93 ranger as tow vehicle. 1. the wiring connector on the trailer is larger than the ranger one, which is corroded and needs to be replaced. I didn't make note of the amount of pins. I am new to this, but it seemed the most logical way to fix this is to replace the corroded one on the ranger with the same type as the trailer connector. Is my logic correct so far? Is the connector something I can pick up at autozone or somewhere? 2. The guy we bought it from said he had the trailer wired to be able to charge the trolling battery while its connected to the truck. He wasn't really able to provide more info than that. So, can anyone tell me how this works? Pros and cons? I think i read on here something about trickle charging not being the best way to charge, don't know if that applies here. Thank you Im sure ill have more
  12. I got a smallmouth bass fishing book for christmas. http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/smallmouth-bass-al-lindner/1000384857?ean=9780960525430&page=index∏=univ&choice=allproducts&query=0960525432&flag=False&ugrp=2& I know the obvious answer is to fish for smallies and I probably will moreso now. How applicable are the behaviors and what i read of smallies apply to LMB?
  13. Thank you for the ideas guys. I don't want to buy a scale, so a balance beam is the ticket. Thanks WRB for the penny equivalents.
  14. I have some jigs I bought a few years ago and dont remember if they are 1/2 or 3/8 oz. I recently got 1/4 oz jigs and are heavier than those. I know the obvious answer is to get a scale, but was hoping someone knows of an alternate way.
  15. We are going to Henderson/Lake Mead next week and plan to fish a few days from the shore while down there. This is our first time at Mead and hitting stripers. I got some info from another forum and wanted to ask here to try and get even more info. This is basically what i've learned so far: -bait is key. frozen anchovies/sardines on a live bait rig and carolina/drop shot rigged as well. -Chum and lots of it. (don't want to spill that in our hotel room). - larger (6-9") swimbaits in rainbow trout patterns. as the lake used to be stocked with them. The weather appears like it will be in the mid 50's by day, 40's night. All fishing will be done from shore. What other lures techniques do stripers go for? I'd like to get as much gear as i can before we leave, but plan to stop at a tackle shop in Henderson to get frozen bait and any last minute things. Thanks

  17. I would like that information also, PM sent. Thank you
  18. About a month ago I bought an abu garcia cardinal 400i combo for $40. The reel is fine, the rod is not so good. How would this be as a replacement for a Medium setup? Im looking at the Plueger President XT combo on sale at Cabelas this weekend. The rod is IM8, I have 2 IM8 rods that are great. The price seems great, but I wonder if i'd be better off buying a rod and reel separately to get the 'right' setup. It just seems like a good deal. Any opinions on the President XT combo?
  19. I got a pack of these swimbaits(i assume that is what they are) years back when I started fishing for bass and have never really used them. They seem to weigh about 1/2 oz, I guess. They look kinda funny to me. Should i read up on swimbaits and give them a try or toss them and try something else?
  20. G.I. (Joe) Jig
  21. Got the bass bug again this summer and winter has just arrived (way too soon imo) here in Utah with 10" snow. Unless i want to take a road trip to lake mead or mohave(which i do), no bass until we thaw next spring. no ice fishing for me. WRB - From what i understand, Utah does not have a warm water species hatchery and has had to import those species from other states. And was not aware of the different strains of LMB until I read some of your posts(and learned alot). So, I was curious if you knew what strain(s) of bass Utah might be stocked with?
  22. I added a 4ft Pline FC leader and am going to try it out tomorrow. we've had a few days of nice weather. My plan is to get some practice with jigs and if it doesn't produce go the old standby at my local water, drop shotting. I've only been able to get bass on the drop at this particular water, with the exception of one bass on a green pumpkin jig. Also, using a braid with FC lead on M rod, what other types of baits would go with this setup? I will report back on how it goes.
  23. I put power pro 10lb equivalent on the reel today and was able to test it before the weather turned. I am very pleased with the increased sensitivity and how usable the braided line is on spinning tackle. Unfortunately, i wasn't able to hook any fish today. Jig fishing will take some practice. Next time I'll add a FC leader and see how that goes. Thanks for help.
  24. I got an abu garcia cardinal 400i combo on sale for $40. It seemed like a good deal and it was the size i was looking for. However, it does have SS guides so im not planning on using the braid for long. I can only bass fish here in utah for another week or two if im lucky.
