  1. Sweet fish Nev. You got a weight or length on her ? The good ole jitterbug produces well for ya
  2. When I am fishing I rarely use a speed on my trolling motor above 1. Even when I am using 1 I don't have it on constantly. I will move up a foot. Cast. Repeat. If I am catching fish I wont move up. I will stay in that spot and keep casting until I believe all the fish have been caught from that spot. I have been with guys who will catch a couple fish in a 10 foot stretch of cover and just keep moving on. I have found that at times just staying at that spot you can catch several more fish. Another very interesting detail I have noticed. There are times when I pull up onto a spot and catch several 3-4 lbers in 20 minutes. Then the bite dies. I have found that when there is a concentration of bass like that there is usually a bigger fish around. After that bite dies I stick it out. I may go awhile with out a bite 20 minutes, 30 minutes or longer but more often then not the next bite I get is usually a bigger fish then what I had been catching. I heard somewhere that 80% of most lakes don't hold fish and that the other 20 % holds 80 % of the bass. In my opinion it is true.
  3. I have had very good luck with pad crushers. Big bass love them. They are a bit longer then most other hollow body frogs making them easier to walk.
  4. Do it ! I would love to see it. Hey I am free during the week all next week if you want to get out fishing where I know 10lbers swim.
  5. If it truly was caught in Mass then it was a freak of nature. Every other state record that breaks 15 lbs was caught below the Mason-Dixon line with one exception. Virginia.
  6. There was a lot of suspicion surrounding that fish. RUMOR was that it was caught in FL and brought back on ice. It is in the record book so that is what has to be beat in Mass. You got to go pretty far south before a 15 lb plus bass is a state record.
  7. I will take 10 casts in an area when everyone else will take 5. I will try every angle, speed, or good looking spot multiple times and often with multiple lures. I do most certainly pay attention to the smallest detail. That smallest detail at times is the difference between catching lunkers or catching nothing.
  8. I think that everyone fishes differently. I would say that after fishing with a lot of guys that I fish slower then every person I have ever fished with.
  9. Hopefully the fishing this fall will be as good as it was last year. I got my rain boots when I went to Alaska to work at a remote fish hatchery. The duct tape makes that one boot look pretty special but it doesn't leak and probably never will. The boots are Alaskan extra tuffs. Very good boots except that one I have on right foot needs a little duct tape. I plan to be on lunker this fall. Taking 22 days off between now and Nov. I am really trying my best to catch a double digit bass in Maine where the record is 11-10. I know some lakes that have the potential to beat the record and am going to fish them all a lot this fall.
  10. I would love to post a state record
  11. Fishing has been real good so far this Sept. Been posting in a bunch of places. I have been lucky enough to catch some real good fish this month including my biggest so far this year a 7-4. Got a two 6 lbers and four 5 lbers. I am not going to participate in the contest for now. I think its time to let some other guys get the spotlight. I think that I had participated in 9 months worth of competition and won 8 of them. Nashua Nev won it this past June. I wish you guys all the best of luck. I will surely be posting some big bass pics this fall. I will be on vacation for 22 days starting this Friday. Looking to catch some lunkers.
  12. I have the temps written down in my fishing log. I am at work right now and don't have the fishing log. As I recall the water temp was 48-50 degrees the end Oct. Nov 7th it was 44-46 degrees. Nov 17th the next time I was able to go back to that spot... Fish were still there. Got a 6-4, 5-12, 5-0 that day dodging icebergs. Had to break through 200 yards of ice.
  13. Why would anyone want to fish in the rain on a warm late fall day ? The 9-1 was during a warm misty/light rain day on Nov 7th of last year. The 8-1 was also during a heavily overcast light rainy day on Oct 25th of last year The 8-3 was caught under similar conditions on the 26th of Oct last year. The best part is all 3 of those fish were caught off of the same exact spot with virtually identical casts.
  14. Of your choices I would recommend Lake Champlain. Northern Lake Champlain. Tabor point, inland sea, Mississqouis bay, rouses point, Georgia shore, Alburg passage, Isle la Motte, all are great areas to catch a lot of smallies and big ones too. From what I have heard from friends that fish and live up in that area on the lake the smallies have schooled up bit time. Big schools. Not uncommon to pull up onto a spot and catch 20-30 or more smallies and big ones over 5lbs are not uncommon. Catching 100 smallies in a day is very possible. A group of my friends were just up there for a week on vacation. My boss is up there on vacation now smallie fishing. If you specifically want to target smallies it is very difficult to beat northern lake champlain. Lots of 3-4 lb smallies up there more then willing to bite. The time is now. They have schooled up and are feeding actively. The bite will last a few weeks.
  15. Sometimes the wind can really get the bite going. I have to deal with the wind way to often in the lakes I like to fish. I usually anchor when the wind gets bad.
  16. Ha Ha. Funny stuff. China Lake in Maine has a lot of 5-7 lbers. China the country idk.... Japan though has huge bass.
  17. Yes I would say that is round. I like catching the round ones. Judging by the photo that fish had quite the girth. 9 lbs 1 oz1 23 inches long 19.5 inch girth 8 lbs 1 oz 22.5 inches long 19.5 inch girth 8 lbs 3 oz 23 1/2 inches long 18 inch girth
  18. I heard about this place on the cape. The guy who taught me how to bass knew of it. He was a member of buzzards luck bass club back in the 80s and was club president for awhile. If that the place we are talking about is the same place the also had some club tourneys on it. 5 fish 36 lbs won it one year.
  19. Is Maine in New England ? Last weekend the fall bite was on. I will be back in Maine on vacation from Sept 26th - Oct 6th so I should have some good info soon. Last weekend it sure did feel like fall. Water temperatures were 62-64 degrees.
  20. I need a bigger boat before I can really compete as much as I like. I did win some trophies and 400 bucks this year. I fished in 7 tourneys this year so far and finished 3 times in 1st place, once in 3rd, twice in 4th and once in 5th.
  21. Consistency comes with experience. I think that in due time I would catch big fish for what ever lake I would be fishing. Its not like that I only fish one or 2 lakes. I have my favorite lakes like everyone else. I have caught bass over 5 lbs in 28 different lakes. To me fishing is like everything else. The more you do the better you get. Another part of what I do is that I keep a detailed fishing log that enables to replicate patterns lake to lake, season to season, given a few variables such as weather, wind, time of year and water temperature. My game plan for fishing for the day starts way before I get to the lake. Another aspect of fishing that it is very important is that you must have confidence. Confidence in where your fishing, what your fishing, and how your fishing it. I think that in time I would catch big fish from a new water. Probably not the first time or even the second but in time I believe I would catch some big fish. Three years ago I moved to Vermont. I had exactly zero experience on every lake that I fished. Over time I figured out some lakes and some patterns. It is true I haven't caught a 7 lber in VT yet. This year as you can see from a lot of my posts I have been fishing A LOT in Maine. In Vermont I have managed to catch some big bass, the biggest being 6 lbs 8 oz. I also won Angler of the year in my bass club in Vermont fishing waters that where completely foreign to me 3 years ago. There is one thing I have noticed about the way I fish compared to every one else I fish with. I like to fish very slow, "sift" methodically. The best way to get really good at fishing a particular lake is to fish it a lot under all conditions. That is why the pros are so good. They fish a lot under all conditions. They spend a lot of time on the water. I think that there is some quote that sums it up from BIll Dance. Someone was asking him how he caught so many fish, big fish and became a pro at the sport. His reply was something like " You want to get good at bass fishing ? Go early and stay late." To sum it all up. If I was tasked to fish a new lake, given zero information on it, I think that there would be a good chance I would catch some quality fish based on my experiences fishing other lakes under every condition you can think of.
  22. I love the fall bite. Big fish become somewhat predictable. The pattern changes and the most effective lures change as well. The average size goes way up, the number of 3 lbers caught goes up. The numbers can suffer if you aren't on fish. Fall fishing surely is different then any other season. You can still have amazing days in the fall. The chances of trophy bass goes up. I would consider fall fishing in new England when the water temps get below 68 degrees. Lately the water temps I have been seeing in VT and ME has been 62-64 degrees. The bite slows down number wise once it hits 50 degrees. You got to fish real slow then and sometimes very deep 40 ft or so but the average size of fish is still very good. I have my best luck for huge bass in spring and fall. Lots of anglers fish in the spring. Once fall hits there is far less activity on the water. All the summer visitors are gone, some, fisherman have packed it up for the year, and a bunch of people are hunting. More often then not in the fall especially the late fall you have the whole lake to yourself which can only work to your benefit. I have found that in new England fall bass tend to congregate in specific areas. Once you find them it can be amazing. This is very true of Lake Champlain. Once your on a school of bass the amount of fish you can catch is incredible. If your limited to shore or in time then the fishing can seem difficult. Some of the best fishing is during the warmest ties of the day in the fall usually between 10-2. I am taking my vacations this fall. It is the best time of year in my opinion for trophy bass.
  23. The fall BASS bite is getting pretty d**n good. Water temps are cooling down. Bass are packing on weight and feeding well.
