New Orleans City Fishing
So my wife has a conference in New Orleans in a couple weeks, and I'm tagging along to eat my way through the city. It also gives me a good excuse to buy a travel rod I've been looking at the map and doing some searching, and it sounds like I can get some shore fishing in at the City Park. It looks pretty spread out - should I be fishing south of the the 610 or north of it? Any other places closeby that I should attempt? I'll be packing light, so I won't have all my tackle. Was going to bring some crankbaits, spinnerbaits, jigs and small variety of soft plastics (worm, trailers, swimbaits). Anything specific I should bring that works in NOLA? Thanks for your help!

Lake Champlain Vacation
Thanks guys. Unfortunately, I won't have a boat or car this vacation. The only watercraft I will have access to are some small recreational kayaks or canoes offered by the resort, which aren't specific to fishing. So, I'm probably relegated to shore fishing or staying close to shore given that. Good idea on hiring the guide early on, I'll do that. Hopefully he'll point out a few spots that I can reach with my limited boating situation.

Lake Champlain Vacation
Hey guys, So my wife booked a vacation this summer at Tyler's Place, which is located in Highgate Springs, VT. It's near the Canadian border, and looking at Google Maps we're near Goose Bay and Rock River Bay. We're going to be there at the end of July, first week of August. I did a search on the forums but didn't find much - just wondering what to expect in terms of fishing? Will the smallmouth and largemouth be biting? I was planning on bringing some rods and my tackle. If there is any specific advice on what lures I should bring, that would be much appreciated. Also, I was planning on hiring a guide for me and my son one day - Capt. Gil. of Bronzeback Guide Service. Anyone know Capt. Gil or have reviews? Apparently he's the on site guide for Tyler's Place. Thanks for your help.

Hello From Va
Thanks all, the forums and more importantly the folks posting are great!

Hello From Va
Hey CP - I'm in the exact same area as you. Small world! Probably fished many of the same local ponds and lakes, which has better fishing then most folks realize. When I take my kid fishing, I'm always surprised there aren't more folks out. Their loss, our gain!

Jig Fishing Questions
I'm new to jig fishing, one of my goals this year is to be come better at it and be able to throw them with confidence. Right now, I'm not there by any stretch. One question I do have is this - what makes you decide between a finesse style jig vs. a a normal casting/flipping jig? Are you supposed to fish a finesse jig in a different manner vs. a normal jig (other then just lighter line/rod action)? I noticed on most finesse jigs, the skirt flares out at the head of the jig, where most normal jigs it's flush. Not sure why that is ... When i'm not in my kayak on the river, I'm usually fishing from the bank on my local lakes/ponds in no more then 6 feet of water. My gut is telling me I should be throwing a finesse style jig for a more subtle presentation, but I'm not sure. They're not heavily pressured lakes/ponds.

Bank Fishing - Chunk Rock
I fish from banks a lot as well. If you want to throw a jig, there is a new double guard jig made by *** - https://nutechlures.com/index.php/. Not affiliated with them in any way, but the videos I've seen and reviews I've read, the jig does what it promises. That being said, I echo the comments made by others and throw in my .02 - texas rigged soft plastics (craws, senkos or throw swimbaits parallel to the bank) - square bill crankbaits to knock off the rocks for reaction strikes - shallow cranks like a Manns Baby 1-Minus to stay above the chunk rock - suspending jerkbaits - spinnerbaits parallel to the bank And when all else fails, move to another part of the lake!

Hello From Va
I stumbled upon this site, and honestly I don't know how this fantastic forum was hidden under my nose for so long! Been fishing since I was knee high to my dad ... so about 35 years I live in Northern VA, fish the local lakes and rivers - Shenandoah and Potomac. I'm either in my kayak (Jackson Coosa) or beating the bank doing some suburban fishing. Looking forward to learning as much as I can to continue to improve. As of now, my goal in 2013 is to become a better jig fisherman!
