  1. Hey all. I did a little searching here and found some good fuel / winterizing suggestions. There is one question I still don't have answered. I run ethanol treatment every fill up. Yama- lube ethanol treatment. Do I still need a stabilizer for winterizing my outboard? I don't want to dump a dose of stabil in the tank if the Yama-lube treatment is enough. My tank will be about half full,so I can cut it some with fresh fuel in the spring if needed. Just wondering. Thanks!
  2. Texas rigged worms of all shapes and sizes. X-Raps in Fire Tiger, Blue/silver,black/silver or brown trout. Skitter pop.
  3. These kind of threads are a reminder of how bad the addiction is. To put it into perspective. This summer I picked up some more cranks. just for good measure. Just over 200 of them. Like 5 large 2 sided Plano guide series boxes full. It's a sickness. Which reminds me. I need to pick up some more soft baits.
  4. Don't know if it qualifies as a "lure",but I have an old Lake of the Woods walleye spinner I bought when I was 15. It has been used, but I have it in the original package. 37 years ago I was in Ely,Baudette, and International Falls on a fishing vacation with my Grandfather. We flew out of Ely up into Canada for a week, then fished the Rainy for a couple days out of Baudette. I fell in love with that country and it's fishing. Had I been of age I may not have come back.
  5. +1 And in my hand at all times. Put the M/Lt in the garage. You are tangled up with heavier fish on a regular basis on long lines. I could live with that.
  6. The worst I ever had was with a Penn 210M. We were throwing 4" suckers one evening and all was well. Right up until my sucker came off at the beginning of the forward cast. What a mess! I was never so happy to get a birdsnest out. I didn't think a mess like that was even possible.
  7. If I have time,I'll come back a little later. Unless it's getting up in the heat of the day. Then I'll try a different angle on the fish right away. I pound a lot of banks and weed edges. If I get a follower at a right angle to the weedline or bank,I'll do a little rounder and try a longer cast or 3 parallel to the bank or weed edge. If I don't see it again in a cast or two I make a mental note for the next trip. If it came from a lay down,I'll put the sun at my back and devote a little time to the cover. Small worm of some sort T-rigged.
  8. Up always. With transom saver in place. The road surface is no place for your skeg. Heck, turning up into my lane here off the township road is a trick. If I do it right I can keep the spare tire on the trailer tongue, and the center roller in the back of the trailer from hitting the road. Lots of up and down here.
  9. Mexico would be sweet. Either El Salto or Baccarac. Not too spendy either, provided a good deal on air fare. Heck,I have 2 un-filled elk tags here that weren't free either, lol. Erie smallies is on my itinerary for next spring. My brother-in-law has been after me to go now for a couple years. He fishes Presque Isle bay and does quite well. Time to check that out.
  10. On your ultimate bass fishing road trip? North country smallies? Florida for bucketmouths? OR someplace in between? Peacock maybe? So what is your dream fishing trip?
  11. Wow! What a topic. It brings back a flood of good memories. I'm going to weigh in with a vote for Rick Clunn. I was just over on his Facebook page and realized IM OLD! d**n. He was my hero back in the 80s. My b-in-law and I were all about bass fishing in the day. We watched all the cable network fishing shows of the time. He was a devoted Roland fan,and I was all about Rick Clunn. Lets say we had some spirited debates on occasion, lol! Good times. I pulled away from bass and boating in the early 90s. A little burned out and raising a family took over. A couple months ago I bought myself another boat. Been loving it big time too. Man! There are a bunch of new techniques out there now. Having fun with all that too. This thread caused me to pause and reflect. I just realized I missed 20 years of something I love. All the old names like the Linders,Roland,Mann,Parker and my old hero Clunn. In my mind a lot of them are timeless. I have a bunch of catching up to to. And who is this up-start VanDam? ......................just kidding.
  12. Picked up a bag of green pumpkin last evening. Looking forward to slinging a couple this weekend. Figuring on dropping them into some holes in the weed beds.
  13. I took a co-worker out a week ago. I was piloting from the front of course, but we discussed it before heading out. He was fine with whatever I decided, being on my home lake. I did everything in my power to keep it an equal opportunity trip. The wind can be a pain. Most of the time I set us up for a drift broadside and perpendicular to the bank. That worked well most of the morning. Otherwise I had to work into the wind to maintain a decent level of control. It was a pretty fair outing and we both caught fish. I did offer to give him the bow,and run the motor control back to the stern . Giving him first pass on all the cover and weed edges. He wouldn't hear of it. A good fishing partner is worth his weight in lures. Being my home lake I gave him position on the better laydowns and points. I can fish them anytime. He was a gracious guest and I returned the courtesy. I have fished with not so gracious people though. No regard for your position or time on a cover. Most times it doesn't mater. I've ticked off a couple fellers picking up better fish from the stern. As a rule. If something like that bothers them, they aren't a good fishing buddy in the first place. I usually try to lighten the mood by thanking them for "softening the old girl up for me" so I could hook it. I don't want any hard feelings over a fish, but I won't apologize for landing one.
  14. I cut my bass fishing teeth pond fishing with rubber worms. Texas or Carolina rigged. Then about 1981 the first boat came along. It was hard to convince me there was another bass fishing method. The black and grape worms just kept putting nice fish in the boat. Finally,my brother-in-law basically challenged me to a fish off...................crank baits only. I had to accept. It was a long and rocky road, but I finally realized there was more to catching bass than chucking worms. I run with something like 200 assorted hard baits in the boat now. Don't get me wrong here. There must be 10 pounds of soft baits too. Just not out of the locker nearly as much. So,at this point in time it's hard baits for me. I must say all this fluke and senko talk has me convinced not to let bull headedness get in the way of success again. I'll be trying some of these new to me techniques very soon.
  15. Nice! Congrats on your new PB. I love those laydowns. Lost my best bass this summer yesterday off a deep laydown.
  16. Thanks Wdy. I'll check it out my friend . smalljaw67; I was over on the Fenwick site and liked the looks of the Elite Bass line. I didn't realize they were replacing the smallmouth rods. Still, sounds like they are going to be pretty sweet. I like long rods. My stream fishing rod for trout is an 8' Cortland Endurance. I run single salmon eggs on it up on the Sinnemahoning and here at home. The real bummer is most of my bass rods are 7' plus. My rod locker in the Starweld is 6'6"! Oh well. I may make some racks for up on the gunnel for the longer stuff.
  17. I took a co-worker out on the lake yesterday for a little bass fishing. He was using one of my rigs with a Pflueger on it. He couldn't say enough good things about the reel. Really liked it. I could see adding another Pflueger or two to the rod locker. ww2Farmer; Are you putting the braid on mono backing on that Purist? That a 1330?
  18. Hey A-Jay. I see you like Erie for smallies. My B-in-Law has been beating on me to go up with him (Presque Isle) for smallmouth. I really need to take him up on it next spring. He's all about walleye right now. Sweet stick there roadwarrior! Thanks for the link.
  19. Hey all. I have a question for all the spin fishing bassers here. I have a bit of a problem and need some opinions. It seems my use of baitcasting reels is about over,or at least going to be limited. An old martial arts injury (broken radial bone) is making casting a pain. Literally. A poor job of healing or nerve damage maybe. Don't know. I do know the dynamics of casting a baitcaster for hours on end is pretty much over. So, on to the next option. This off season I want to rig 2 spinning outfits to handle the bulk of my bass fishing. One worm/jig rig and a crank/jerk rig. I'm a firm believer you get what you pay for,but all that glitters isn't gold either. What do you fellas recommend for reliable, durable reels that can take the hours of continuous use? What are your favorite rod / reel combinations? Custom? Off the shelf? What will take a licking and keep on ticking? What's your go-to? Your experience will be appreciated. Thanks!
  20. Well,I guess I'm not alone in this either. Been wondering about the Trion. Mine is a line twisting pain in the a$$. It's a swivel,or prepare to swear at it. I used it for a couple years stream fishing for trout with single eggs with no issue. Put a load on it like a shad rap or bomber "B" and it won't take long. I suspect the roller. Light load on a short line and it's fine. Put a strain on her without a swivel and she'll twist up like a demon.
  21. My first trip was with my uncle (Dad didn't fish),at age 7,(1969) By the time I was 10, I was fishing on my own for trout as we lived about 3/4 mile from a trout stream. Cherished memories for sure. At 13 we bought a place with it's own pond. I stocked it with bass, catfish and perch I caught from a generous neighbor's pond. From then on the bass reigned supreme in my mind as king of the fishes. I lost about a 4 lb smallie last Monday morning, and can't wait to get back on them this Sat. 42 years after that old farm pond and they still get me fired up.
  22. Took an extended weekend this week. 4 days of bass and relaxation. Figuring on hitting Lake Arthur Fri., and maybe Lake Wilhelm Monday. Anyone have a bite report on either lake? Thanks!
  23. I have one of those! love it too.It needs a rod at the moment. I also have a similar vintage Black Mag with the little hood you open over the front. Bought it as a combo from Bass Pro back a long long time ago. Sheese! Must be pushing 30 years or so. Mid 80s maybe?
