Hey gang. I have a question for you all. I need to come up with a good nav light. Hand held isn't getting it. My hand held is a great light,but not very convenient. What can I do for a good mounted white light for navigating reservoirs / rivers that are prone to floating debris at night? I'd like to wire it directly into my console nav light switch. Spot? Flood? Low or high mounted? My stupid bow mount troller takes up so much of the front of the boat, that location is pretty much out of the question. Some of the most successful people locally are turning to night fishing almost exclusively,so I guess I need to smooth out the rig a little. Thanks!

Roots. Hmmm. My roots go back to a farm pond and the Bass Oreno plug. I bet if I had one of those old plugs I could still catch bass on her. Those were good days. I lost my last one to a very energetic bass. My plug was dangling over a limb on a laydown about a foot out of the water. I was working on getting it free, the whole while it was jigging up and down in the limbs of the laydown. That was when a feisty 3 or so pounder came up out of the water and took the lure. Snapped the snag and the line. Those were my first lures. I wish I still had one of them for old time sake.

A Shad Rap in Helsinki Shad or the X-Rap 10 in Olive. Either one would do.

Mine fishes. Outing before last she bested me by 5 bass. She is all about it provided the weather is good. We look forward to spending our retirement fishing.

Next years lures. Hmmm. I don't have any KVD crankbaits. Need some of those. I sent an email off to Siebert jigs this afternoon. Be needing a bunch of those. Umbrella rig? Why not. Gotta try it. Looked at the frogs at Cabelas yesterday. Still thinking about that. I used to do well on Jitterbugs years ago,so these should be a hoot to. Aw there's no hope for tackle junkies. I'm trying to keep it well thought out and organized,but it's hard. Heaven help me if I ever hit the lottery.

Bass on round reels? But aren't all the pros using those "spacey" looking jobbies? You know the ones. They look like a Ferrari with line sticking out of the grill. Who da thunk you could catch bass on a round reel?!? Just kidding my friend. I love the classic appeal of the old Ambassadeurs . When I was a pup,I'd go fishing with my grandpa up on Erie handy Cleveland. He ALWAYS bought Garcia reels. I use to feel like I was something special using his outfits. That would have been back about 1970/72. Right in there with some of yours. I wish I would have gotten a hold of one of his outfits before he died. I don't know what ever happened to them. You have a BUNCH of beautiful rigs there.

I figured there was a benefit for hook setting. Tighten up the drag,set the hook and start back peddling. Dunno. I'm probably going to rely on the drag. Too old to start retraining myself now. It was interesting to watch him land chunky Erie smallies.

Hey all. I was watching Mark Davis drop shotting on Erie. He was back reeling to land bass. Anyone else here rely on back reeling as opposed to relying solely on the drag? It looked like he was putting his right index finger down on the bail as an anti-reverse sort of stop. Pretty slick.

I ordered an Okuma EVx medium glass in 7'8". Gonna give it a whirl for medium cranking. Anyone running one of these for cranks?

Cabelas customer service is top notch. I recently ordered a new waterfowl wader that was too small. I called Cabelas and they got a replacement out that day. I filled out the return form,slapped the return label on the box and handed it to the UPS dude when he delivered the replacement waders 2 days later. Pretty sweet. Cabelas credited my card for the full amount plus 8 cents for interest. They have been nothing but helpful with all my returns and questions over the last 13 years as a card holder. You should be back in business in no time.

Hey all. I have a Garmin GPS MAP 62S handheld. Does anyone make a North American lakes mini SD for the like? I have a card in it now from Hunting GPS maps for hunting in Colorado. Super little addition too. I love that particular unit especially with the Colorado card. Best hunting accessory I ever bought. Something similar for lakes by region would be fantastic. Ever hear of such a thing? Thanks!

I hear ya new2BC4bass! It's just been sensory overload this summer. Bought a new boat,and started stocking up on lures and such. Every aspect of the game is different. I've been you tubing the FLW and BASS tours. I remember when Roland Martin was one of my heroes .Now it's Scott. Good to see Rick Clunn is still kickin. Can't figure how these guys got older and I didn't,lol. Some old techniques have new names.Some new techniques. The lure industry has exploded. Soft baits don't stop with Creme and Manns now. I'm still currently using the Bantam Black Mag I bought new in the mid 80s. A Bass Pro Shops Spiral Graphite 5'6" Heavy pistol grip rod. Bought it for yanking bass from laydowns and timber on spinner baits and T-rigs. When I bought the Bantam,my buddy bought an old Abu Garcia Ambassadeur "Thumb Bar" reel. We were amazed. I guess this winter I'll be re-educating myself with all the new improvements in tackle. Oh I know it's all a "For now" experience. Been there done that,lol. It's a sickness,this tackle-itis. You and I should sit down over a pile of wings and a beverage. We surely have some of the same stories. Where do you fish over that way? My home lakes are pretty much Keystone and Mahoning. I like to hit Glendale and Arthur occasionally too. I'm looking forward to Presque Isle bay Smallies in the spring. My b-in-law has them dialed in and has been dogging me to tag along. I can't wait to give them a go. He's been hammering the Walleye as well now that he has a more suitable boat. I guess we have our work cut out for us my friend. Like kids in a candy store. Cool thread. I always love these discussions. I can't honestly answer it though. You see,I'm coming off a long bass fishing hiatus. About 25 years I guess. MAN! There are about a million new top shelf rods and reels now. I'm gonna need a couple years just to catch up. I'm the type that can appreciate fine equipment. I'm also an equipment junkie. Fishing is right up my alley. While I was on "hold" from bass fishing,I was still pounding the streams for trout and steelhead. I have boxes and boxes of flies lying around. 3 different fully stocked vests. Waders for special occasions. some Orvis and Ross hanging around. You get the picture. Along the way though something changed. I became a father of two lovely girls. Now approaching college age. I still love the pics of these new fangled top shelf reels. Friggin beautiful! But like someone mentioned earlier,"If you have the money,get it." Right now I don't. I am however planning for my retirement. Not just a 401K. A fishing retirement,so this sort of question has come up in my head a couple times. Here is where I come down on the whole thing right now in today's budget. Bearing in mind I'm very uneducated in the upper tier equipment of late. One TBC711HMF StCroix rod with a Tatula Type-R mounted on her. Pair that with a TBS610MLXF rod and a 2500 Stradic Ci4+ swinging under it and I'm done. Bring on the bass and the paycheck in the mailbox. Either or (or preferably both) of these would make me happier than a hog in a wallow. Expensive? Not really. But for me they represent my ultimate doable combos. For now anyway.
