  2. Harris is my home lake, live about 7 miles from there. Just to give you a brief overview of the current situation in NC is simply crazy. We moved to the town we live in back in 2005. In 2005 the population was 10,000...it's now 33,000 and they're expecting it to be 50,000 in 3-5 years. The town is looking at approximately 5,600-6,000 houses to be built in the next 3-5 years. Houses in the 200-275k range are selling in hours with multiple offers. I know a local realtor and he says he tells his clients to be prepared to buy a house sight unseen, sounds crazy but it's true. We've had friends that lost out on houses on the drive to go see them. Our friends sold their house for $10k over asking by a couple that saw it online. We love it here and wouldn't want to live anywhere else, but the area is going through major growing pains, with the most apparent thing being traffic. As you can imagine, with the swiftness of the growth & govt bureaucracy there hasn't been the ability to keep the roads up. Commute times are increasing exponentially and it doesn't appear to be slowing down anytime soon. Good luck with whatever you decide, if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.
  3. Hello, In two weeks I'm about to start my adventure as a first time boat owner, so I am extreme newbie. I have an aunt & uncle that have done extremely well for themselves and are looking to retire in the next 3-5 years. Part of this process is they are starting to downsize the # of toys they have. They knew I was interested in their boat, so I called them and started negotiating price. Out of nowhere, they say "we've decided to just give you the boat." I'm still in shock but am excited and nervous at the same time (so much to learn). The boat is a 2002 bass tracker pro crappie 175 with a 25hp motor. They only used it a handful of times and it could pass as brand new. Having said this, do you guys have any tips/tricks/advice for an extreme newbie? I know the first few times I'm going to go and fish at a lake that has very little activity as I've heard people can become impatient and rude at boat loading/unloading areas in a hurry so believe I should stay away from the lake closest to me that is extremely busy. I really appreciate any information you guys could provide. Thanks Steve
  4. Do you ever fish Harris Lake? I live in Southeastern Wake County about 3-4 miles from Harris and fish & kayak there often. I've never fished Falls Lake but have heard it's pretty good.

"If you think healthcare is expensive now, wait till you see what it costs when it's free." - PJ O'Rourke "Everyone will have an opinion, it doesn't matter whether it's right or not." - Good friend "Opinions are like a-holes, everyone has one and, quite frankly, most of them stink." - Another good friend "If you think time files at your age, wait till you get my age (I'm 36, he's 72)" - My dad "Socialism is for the people, not the socialist." - Andrew Wilkow
  6. Time definitely flies, my oldest will be 8 in a few weeks. I remember bringing him home from the hospital like it was yesterday. Thank you for your service and am glad to hear you wife is doing well. One quote that has always stuck with me is "learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow."
  7. I think my burnout comes from a few things. I just started fishing earlier this year and also bough the kayak about 4 months ago. I think what happened is that I really did both of the activities too much. I would kayak on both Saturday & Sunday mornings until around noon, then take my oldest son fishing until dinner time. Then we'd eat and then go fishing again. That was on the weekends, we would also fish almost every night during the week. I also primarily fish the same lake in the same spots. The lake I fish is heavily pressured, so it is very hit or miss. For instance, no bites for 2 weeks then all of sudden I'll pull out a 5 pounder. My wife hasn't gotten into the outdoors as much as I have as our kids are ages 7 & 4. While I take the 7 year old fishing, she watches the 4 year old. All in all, I don't think it is a bad thing if I am slowing down on the fishing & kayaking a little bit. One thing I have been doing is if the fish aren't biting, I won't fish as long. When I first started fishing, even if the fish weren't biting I'd still fish for hours. Thanks for all of your responses, they were very helpful & insightful.
  8. I probably do feel a bit guilty since I spent $1200 on the kayak and the wife makes sure I know it. I actually used to play golf, but when it went from being 3.5 hours per round to 5-5.5 hours per round I had to find another hobby. Thanks for the response.
  9. Wondering if any of you have ever experienced burnout from fishing, kayaking or both? When I first got my kayak, I used to wake up every Saturday & Sunday AM and couldn't wait to load up and go. Now, I just don't have the motivation. Fishing is sort of the same way, even if I didn't kayak I would want to go fishing somewhere. I hope & believe this feeling is temporary. If any of you have ever had this feeling, how did you go about handling? Thanks Steve
  10. There is a product called snake away that you can buy at Lowe's or Home Depot that does a good job of keeping snakes out of our yard.
  11. Nice kayak, I kayak on Shearon Harris a lot as I live about 5 miles from there. Living in Angier, how often do you hit up Sunny Sky's? Best ice cream I've ever had!!
  12. Hello All, Just got into fishing within the last year and love it. My dad started taking my 8 year old son out to fish, I was never into it until one day they asked if I wanted to go. I caught a few fish and have been hooked ever since. Bought a Jackson Cruise a few months ago and love fishing even more. I'm originally from Central NY but am one of the many relocated yankees that live in central NC. I've been reading this site for a few months now and am looking forward to the interaction along with learning as much as possible. Thanks Steve
