  1. Does anyone know if the new Quantum Smoke speedfreak spinning reel is convertible crank?
  2. I Was wading in the middle fork of the whitewater river that ran behind the campground we were at. The river feeds the Middlefork reservoir in Richmond Indiana, that I had fished before in my boat. Always did pretty good in that stretch of river some deep holes, and just enough largemouth action to keep a guy interested. Got to the I-70 overpass and was catching bigger fish casting under the overpass, so I thought I would just wade on up to the Indiana 227 overpass and walk up the bank and walk the road back to the campground. Was in water nearly over my waders, but I have done that before so that did not bother me, however the closer I got to the reservoir the muckier the bottom got . As I was trying to find a way out I suddenly found myself crotch deep in mud so thick I could no longer move my legs, OH CRAP! I AM SCREWED I had my cell phone in my pocket, but who am I going to call! Seen a guy in a boat a few hundred yards away, but with the noise off the Interstate He could not here me yelling at him. The thought of dropping my waders and swimming for shore and leaving my gear went through my mind, but my son bought me the Frog-toggs for Christmas one year and I didnt want to lose them. Finally after about a half hour of hard work I managed to free myself and find a way to shore, learning a lesson, I love to fish and catch fish, but some things are not worth it. Dumb move.
  3. I fished there last Memorial day with my son, He lives in Meadville. It was very crowded when we were there, but I can tell you what I found. There is a large sand flat to the north west of the channel leading out to the main lake, there is also a sand flat to the north of the outlet once you get on the lake out of the channel. These are said to be prime smallmouth spawning grounds, but when we were there no one was catching anything there and there were hundreds trying. We really did our best on the south shore more to the west side, and did catch some fish along the sea walls and rock walls. So much pleasure boat traffic and speed boats trying anything in the middle was not safe. there is an area very shallow on the north west part that people were wading in, out as far as 100 yards or so. We pulled into a marina to get fuel, I asked the young man working there if I could make a cast or two while we were filling up, he said he didnt care. I made a few cast along the docks to our side and caught a big bluegill. That was the first time I ever caught a fish at a gas station.
  4. I have a G3 1860 vbw with a 85 hp merc. It will run 40mph trimmed out, and is goes across rough water like silk. I bought just a bare boat and built all the floor. console and storage my self. PM me your email address and I will show you pics of what I did. I was at Whitewater Memorial fishing late one afternoon last year, quit about dark, was loading my boat at the same time two older guys were loading there Z9 nitro bass boat, looked like new. all they could do was keep telling what a nice boat I had, I get compliments on it all the time, I had a conservation officer checking it out one day at Brookville In. said it was one of the nicest boats he had ever seen. Nothing wrong with aluminum boats, you may not get on the lifestyles of the rich and famous with it, but the fish dont know what kind of boat you have.
  5. I have read several pieces this winter where fish biologist and other researchers claim there is no proven relationship between baro pressure and fish behavior. So if thats true that kind of blows the front in or out thing out the window. I have to fish when I can, I only have 1 full day a week off that being Sunday. Saturday is a half day, but there are no lakes close to me so that day is hard. Worse thing about wind to me is boat control on the trolling motor. Messes my hair up too.
  6. The one I have is the long extending pole with the pigs-tail end. It extends out like 20 feet. The knocker ones work I am sure, but when your wife is hung up 10 feet UP in a tree, gravity is not your friend. Remember, when you use these things your in trouble already so dont expect positive results every time.
  7. Drained the last 3 gallons of fuel from the boat tank this spring to mix fresh fuel, thought, same mix [50-1] as my trimmer, I will use it in that. A nice unexpected side effect It smells like I am on the lake in the boat while I am trimming! Imagine the grass blowing in the wind is the water, the weeds are bass and your all set!
  8. Went to a 175 acre electric motor lake today, got there about 2:30 pm, place was packed, I think it was a "fish free in indiana day" Thats always bad, lots of morons. But back to the subject at hand, I had a guy tell my for the last 2 weeks, man this place is on fire, you need to go down there. Well I drove hour and a half, water was muddy but 68 degrees, 5 hours of fishing produced one 12 inch LMB. I guess the fire went out.
  9. I have a few of them, do they work? well, I have tied one on when nothing else was working and caught fish, but I have also used them with no results. The sound they make is like the sounds Hydro waves make, its intended to make the sound of bass feeding on baitfish, not baitfish themselves.
  10. Dogmatic, my son lives in meadville Pa, going there over Mem day weekend, any hot spots north of you? Yea, I have found lots of spots using maps, bing has better clarity.
  11. Dogmatic, where the @@#$ is S.E.P.A.?
  12. lots of river right off 28, aint sayin where. Of course with the thaw, rain, and flooding those holes may not be there anymore! Had a great place that was almost impossible to walk, the shallowest area was nearly to my armpits, 1 wet winter and spring that hole is knee deep now. Water has not been down enough for me to comfortably wade yet , every time its close it rains a bunch. When I get there I will PM you and let you know how it is. Taking the boat out this weekend to Whitewater Mem.
  13. I have found a few great smallmouth holes in a local river way out in the middle of nowhere, nothing but corn, birds and snakes around, I tell NO ONE where they are. There are no banks that you can fish from, its almost straight up on the sides, you wade in downstream and walk to them.
  14. Hit a small [25 acre] lake in the village of wayne lakes, just east of Greenville Ohio Sunday am. Water temps were 57, close to 58. Caught 3 LM, 14 inchers, but they were very fiesty, hit hard. Also picked up a bluegill, had several other nudges, but no other hookups. Caught 2 of the bass and the bluegill slow rolling a 1/4 oz inline spinner, and one bass on a jig. I seen a lot of small bait fish moving in the shallow grass when I was putting the boat back on the trailer. Hoping the bigger water has warmed up some in the last few weeks, any one from central Indiana have any info?
  15. Last time I was out they were snoring zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
  16. Pflueger, Pflueger , Pflueger. Thats all there is to say.
  17. Got out today for the first time this year, reservoir I was on water temps were 46 degrees, nothing over 47. Got skunked [expected]. At what water temps in anyones opinion do you belive the fish become active enough that you dont have to crawl a jig at a snails pace across the bottom to get a bite. Dont get me wrong, I have been skunked at this place in the summer with live bait, so its not an unusual event here, but what do you think. 50, 55 degrees? warmer? I hate finesse fishing, but did it anyway, dragging and hopping a jig across the bottom. If nothing else my old outboard ran good, and I got to try out my new reels. Was very windy also which did not help, hard to slow fish when you cant keep the boat in one place for 30 seconds.
  18. High school girlfriends mom told me, ----- "the best birth control is an asprin held firmly between the knees"
  19. I use P-LINE c21 Copolymer on everything, superlines are stiff and more prone to birdsnest, braid is very difficult to cut off the spool after a mega-birdsnest. P-line is tough but soft as long as you stay 10 lb or below. Cheap baitcasters dont have the better brakes or backlash controls that the better reels do, you would be better off with the cheapies after you mastered them, and can thumb the spool to control your cast. settings and line type are the 2 things that I found important when I first started using them, I still fish with spinning reels and bait casters depending on what I am throwing.
  20. Talked to a guy Who fishes a lot of tournaments, he said he fished Brookville last weekend water temps were 43, said Whitewater Memorial was producing Bass, Bluegill and crappie. All the rain should warm temps, agreed, but whitewater gets very muddy after heavy rain this early in the year. I am a little farther south than you, so hoping that things are picking up here this weekend. Going to try it anyway, Will post any results good or bad. Planning on getting up into the Wabash Co,. area this year to fish.
  21. I would be fishing from my boat in any case, small or large lake, there are about 3 of the 10 smaller lakes that have ramps that can handle my boat. I havent bank fished in years, I wade or take the boat out.
  22. Well, that is why I said maybe on the water temps. Havent been anywhere yet to actually see for myself so It may not be that warm. I know when I had fished these smaller lakes a year agon they were about 5 degrees warmer surface temps than the bigger reservoirs around here. Going to try to get out next weekend to see for myself. Hoping All the rain we have had will help the temps ,also these lakes are also all in residential areas so there is no muddy runoff from fields ect.
  23. My son is coming to visit on the second weekend of April, {he said I am sure we can find something to do, I said we are going fishing!] Knowing that most fisherman have an opinion I am asking for some. The water temps around here will most likely still be in the low 50s then ,maybe, but knowing that small bodys of water warm faster than larger ones, I am considering hitting some small, [15 to 25 acre] lakes in a area where I used to live. They are all old shallow gravel pits, most 25 ft at the deepest. I know most of them pretty well, fished there when I was a kid, and have fished them some in the last few years since I got a boat. I ask for your take on this, would you hit smaller shallower lakes, or bigger, deeper lakes given a choice. Whenever he has been here We always manage to get on fish and figure a pattern out before the end of the day, he is pretty depressed about still being iced out in northern Pa. and says he does not feel the ice is safe enough to ice fish anymore this season. Just curious as to which way some of you would go. PS, a few of the small lakes have great cover and structure
  24. When I was a kid I fished with a guy for a few summers who had fished all over the country, and had caught many different species of fish, he always told me, All the fish sees is something moving in the water, They dont know what it is until they put it in there mouth. Some lures dont look like anything in nature.
  25. I am 100% catch and release, I dont need to fish to eat. I was at a local reservoir last summer , just pulled the boat out when one of the "regulars" a guy I see there every time I go there, ask me if we did any good. We were bass fishing and had picked up a few but nothing major, he ask me if I wanted any Walleye, I said no thanks when He replies " I have a whole freezer full of fish at home and I dont know what I will do with these if I cant find someone to give these to" I am like WHAT! If you did not want them then why are you keeping them, Some people. I get guys all the time ask my "catch anything" I will say just a few 12 inchers and they reply "them would eat" no wonder there are so few bass in some of these lakes around here. I understand your disgust.
