  1. I am considering getting a Diawa reel with the sv spool technology. I am interested in a more forgiving reel for skipping and lighter weight bait applications. I am curious if spending the money on Tatula Sv or the new Zillion is that much better than other mid to high end reel manufacturers. I have plenty of Lew's and Abu Garcia reels, but they are a headache once I start trying skip. Will I be blown away by the mentioned Diawa models performance or would I be better served just trying to better train my thumb while skipping. Thanks For taking the time to read this.
  2. I am a bit awestruck by the way Youtuber's are changing the scene. The young men that make videos like the googen squad drive me a bit crazy. Before the scene started changing to entertainment instead of education I enjoyed some of their videos. The fact that companies are designing rods with these kids names to sell them is a bit alarming. They are not professional fisherman in my opinion, so I find it foolish that people buy their "designed" rods. Ive never used their products and never will. I have no trust in their opinions of what is necessary to have a quality rod. I do still like some youtube video series very much. I enjoy Glen's material, wired to fish, and the Tacklejunky. Tacklejunky does not come off overly attached to his sponsors products, and seems far more interested in discussing the techniques and baits that he has had success with. I far prefer education over entertainment. I also feel like some of these youtuber's who get sponsorship due to their silly antics and view potential harms somewhat the professional fisherman. Sponsorship money in a lot of anglers cases is hard to get. Some 23 year old kid opening boxes with a weed whacker getting that money over a guy with 30 years experience fishing the tour circuits in my mind is appalling.
  3. Ive heard in the low 50's that a buzzbait still works. Although in all the examples of this working were in the early spring.
  4. I tie my leader with a crazy Alberto, and then my flouro knot is the San Diego Jam Knot. Shaw Grigsby has a decent video on how to tie the flouro knot. I have not had one fail yet.
  5. I keep on hand 8, 12, and 15. 8 for Finesse. 12 for moving baits (cranks, Spinnerbaits, swimjigs). 15 for jigs and Texas rigs I honestly judge this based on how my leader knot goes through the rod. If it does not work too well I use a short leader. For crankbaits I use a 25 ft or more leader. It all depends on preference and how the knot performs leading the spool and the rod eyes.
  6. It’s not worth investing in a casting reel for light work. The reels that can truly handle light items well are expensive. The rods that are light and sensitive enough will cost a bunch too. Spinning setups are great I use finesse a lot on my spinning setup. I am just as confident casting and pitching a spinning reel as I am a bait caster. Also the spinning reel with light line is a blast. My largest fish in each of the last tree years has been on a spinning finesse setup.
  7. I only use Hi vis braid, but use a leader in all situations. I do not mind the extra work, because the line is so much easier to track to detect bites. It also keeps my friends and family from casting over me more often!
  8. Love his stuff! Color selection is fantastic and the quality is great. Mike is very good about responding to any questions you might have. I have utmost confidence in his swim jigs as well as his shaky headed jig. Honestly if it’s a jig of any kind I get it from him. I just got some swim bait heads from him this week. The guy uses quality hooks I trust to stick fish and not bend. I can’t get enough of his stuff.
  9. Whatever you choose be brand loyal. You will be more comfortable with each setup. I regret not being more brand loyal. I will be going forward.
  10. Spend the money and get the Ultrex. My father did and it is incredible. The spot lock works great and the foot pedal reacts much like a cable drive. I can feel where I am driving pretty well without paying attention to trolling motor head.
  11. I have not bent any blades thus far. I use either a swim bait trailer like a Keitech or bass pros paddle tail swim bait. Sometimes I use a rage tail menace, but that seems to be the fastest bait to rise to the surface. I am curious with the bending of the blades. Could you share more on where to bend them and how it affects the action?
  12. Foggy either half ounce or 3/8 but I think it’s mostky 3/8 anymore. I use 6.4.1 abu stx.. I stopped using 7.1.1 for that particular bait. Line used would be braid to fluorocarbon leader usually 12 or 15 pound test leader.
  13. I think not feeling so much vibration might be why I lose confidence in the action. Thanks for the great points.
  14. I’ve had some good days on bladed jigs before, but lately I’ve really struggled keeping the bait from breaking the surface. Does everyone keep the bait right near the surface? Having the bait riding so high in the water column has started to shake my confidence in the baits. I’ve used spinner baits much more because of it.
  15. Do you start with sand paper then? Also what polish do you use? I have been using fabuluster it’s hard as a rock so idk if I could use it without a high speed tool. I’m not trying to pry to much into your process or anything. I’ve only had a couple articles to go off of and a YouTube video.
  16. I don’t try left handed bait caster, because I’m worried I’d like it! I would have to replace my whole lineup. I have noticed you can get really nice reels on sale left handed, because people don’t buy them as frequently.
  17. I have the fk it’s a quality reel for sure, but I always am wondering if it would have been worth the extra dough for the ci4. To be honest I will probably end up with one of those as well in the long run. The FK has smooth drag and good casting distance. It is also one smooth peice of equipment. You really can’t go wrong on either selection.
  18. I’m not sure that you need a low gear ratio. In bass fishing years ago pros said low for cranking always, but in the last few years I’ve noticed that has changed. Aaron Martens has said on some of his video Facebook posts that he uses 8.5.1 metanuims for everything. I’m not saying buy that expensive of a reel, but something high speed will be much more versital if you ever decide to throw something other than cranks on the reel or need that reel in a pinch for any other use. I think line capacity and the ability to really launch the bait with a good rod might help more then slow gears. I might be totally wrong on this one though. For a budget reel you could look at pfluegar supreme has good capacity and has a low ratio model.
  19. E clips are dreadful for me so far. I also have trouble sanding the brake drum on the left palm face plate. I hate using a tooth pick and sand paper in my rotary tool so I tried a wheel brush for dentistry, but it had a metal screw at the top that scored the plastic bearing housing. It threw everything off and man it’s hard to find a part number to replace the side plate for lews. I had to just email the company.
  20. I’ll tell anyone what I’ve been doing. I figure fishing so variable that even if I slaughter then one day or even consistently for awhile things will change fast. I also think patience and technique plays such a big role that the information doesn’t hurt, because success is not guaranteed.
  21. I’ve seen a post about this rod a few months ago, but no one at the time happened to own one. I received my Colt two weeks ago and find it to be a nice rod for the price. Now that said I have been fishing prodomently spinner baits with the rod so I don’t have a fantastic idea on sensitivity for Texas rigged baits or anything like that. I have so far had good hookups with the rod. The rod is lightweight and feels sturdy as well. I feel like it is worth the money for the budget anglers.
  22. Hello I have recently gotten really into tuning my reels. I am wondering if there is a large community of people who do the same. I’m not looking to profit just as a hobby. I find information about the tools of the trade hard to find and still struggle with some of the mechanics, but I really am enjoying the process and learning. I’ve done work to 7 reels so far with varied results. I did end up damaging a plastic bearing housing on a Lews reel which was a bit of a bummer, but I have had other reels turn out really well. I did an old pro qualifier of my Dads that had been on the shelf for years that is now very smooth and fantastic to use. Sorry for the long winded post I just don’t really have many people to talk to it about thank you!
  23. There is a model of the shimano curado that's on sale at 129.99 I cannot tell you the website name on here because it is a banned site. Hint another site Man bass resource is good at moderating. It caught the hint. it's honestly impressive. I don't know why some things aren't allowed to be discussed, but I shop around where the deal is best. I can't afford to be allied to any particular tackle outfit. Other then siebert outdoors for my skirted bait needs I will always buy from there.
  24. I have this reel. It is not really my favorite, but it is a solid choice. I have it in 8.3.1 for pitching application. I will say it is sadly not the best pitching reel that I have. I do like Lew's products, but in this case I think the extra money for a BB1 is worth it.
