Brake Settings
I picked up my first baitcaster this year, a cronarch, and im wondering what the deal is with the brake settings. It seems to me to not make much difference no matter what size bait im using. I keep 2 of the little plastic weights on the side in the on position at all times. My only adjustment is with the tension knob. Every time i touch the brake i have problems. Seems to be a garunteed backlash. Ive messed with it quite a bit with different sized lures and the only setting that seemed to work is the one i mentioned. Now with lighter lures i should be dialing down the brake a bit to get better casts? I think i understand the physics of how it actually works but any adjustment just seems to foul things up. Maybe i should just leave well enough alone until im bit more experienced with this gear.

No fall action????
They were going crazy for the buzzbait on the small ponds near me up until about 3 days ago. Switched to a large jointed rapala painted like a chain pickeral and have had some luck. Blowing up on the shiners too, if you use em. Soft plastics have been slowing down a lot for me but ive been seeing guys pull in decent weight with som small jigs. I got a couple swimbaits on order too and im looking forward to seeing how those work out.

Cape Cod Canal Fishers?
Wondering if anyone could give me some tips on fishing the canal. I have done very little saltwater fishing over the years and most of that was from a boat. Over the past six months i have been down to the canal several times and have had no success. Ive used fresh squid, pogies, mackeral and some topwaters during slack tide. Have yet to catch a fish. I know patience is a virtue but i got about 80 hours fishing on the canal with not one striper, so its wearing thin. I dont know if the striper are still in the canal at this time of year or are they there year round? Dont know much about it and im looking for some pointers. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

best rod for a symetre?
Hey my buddy just picked up a shimano symetre 2500 a few months ago but hes got it on a crappy rod. His girlfriend was asking me for a good christmas present for him and i suggested a new rod. Can someone suggest a few rods in the $60-$80 range? Any help would be much appreciated. And i should mention he prefers shorter rods 6' and under for some reason

I thought you were further south than me, you getting frost already?

What would you have done???
I will usually try to match a fluke to color of ther baitfish i see in that situation. Ill try it weightless first around the edges of the baitfish, not too close so as not to spook them, and if that doesnt work ill throw a weight on it and try to get underneath the baitfish. When the fluke doesnt produce ill drop a senko or a grub underneath them. I probably hit about 60/40 with those techniques in that situation i think thats pretty good but im sure some others will have better tips too.

another thread about weeds
I fish a few similar ponds and have had a lot of luck with a jointed rapala fished slow just under the surface where the deeper weeds and surface weeds meet. Also works good in the morning and evening when twitched on top. Other than that i usually use weightless plastics.

Cant fish my favorite spot
Theres a small pond down the street from my house ive been fishing since i was ten. The way I usually get there to fish i have to walk across this guys property. Recently he has asked me not to walk across his property. However there is now no other way to access this pond other than crossing private property. It is not a private pond but it seems that there is now no public access to fish there that i know about and the fishing is pretty good. Who can i contact in my town or maybe the MA fisheries department to find out about a right of way or some such to access this pond?

biggest bass i ever saw
ohh and can i count him as my new personal best? or does that not count?
-
biggest bass i ever saw
Out at my normal fishin hole the other day w/ no pole just clearing some brush for later. Apparently someone let a couple boards out of the dam at the far end, the water dropped a couple feet in an hour. Good for me, makes more room to clear the brush. Anyways im walkin along and hear some thrashin from a bush that was underwater a few minutes ago. Go to take a closer look and the biggest bass ive ever seen (in person anyways). Didnt have a scale, a tape measure, nothing. My personal best is 6.5# and this thing was easily twice as big. Unfortunately he looked pretty cut up and when i placed im back in the water i saw im keep surfacing every ten feet or so. I would love to try catching this fish legitamately, you guys think he died?

Ill do the experiment.
I think you might be right on that one. The acids from the stomach could help It faster. I could always let there be more PH though. And I ment rust for hust and deplet is a word that means being used up or disappearing. deplet? do you mean deplete... or is it depleat?

pickerel as bait
Yeah i guess your right, but i can catch about 30 pickerel a day in this pond so i dont think im hurting fish populations by killing a couple a month

pickerel as bait
I dont know how u all feel about live bait fishing (ive heard some people look down on it) but ive caught very small pickerel 5-8" and thrown em on the biggest hook i had in the box. The bass seem to go crazy for the injured pickerel, more so than any other live bait i've used. Is this because theyre a fish the bass naturally feed on in the pond?
