9.9hp Too Small for a 17ft Aluminum Boat?
The guy that owns this boat said his father bought it new in 89' but has passed on so he completely redid everything in the boat and on the trailer...basically everything that could be replaced or redone was within the past year including a $600 trolling motor that was new last year and has never seen the water.

I doubt that it will make much difference but he does also have a 55lb thrust bow mounted minn kota trolling motor on it too.

9.9hp Too Small for a 17ft Aluminum Boat?
I found a really nice 1989 Lowe boat that has had everything replaced on it, the boat has been gone through from bow to stern within the past year. It's in my price range but the only problem with it is it only has a 9.9hp outboard...how can that size of a motor even move this boat much less with two full grown and slightly overweight adults and a small child in it? It's really too bad as it sounds like a great boat but gosh wouldn't that be the equivalent of a trolling motor if three people were in it?

Bad Experience at Dealers!!!
I forgot to add that we had CASH in hand, he wouldn't have had to wait for a loan approval or finance himself or see if a check would clear...we offered him cold hard cash and made that known to him and he still acted this way, unbelievable!

Bad Experience at Dealers!!!
Sorry but that's like giving this dealer a hall pass for bad behavior and I don't agree! We had been looking at this boat for the past week and while he said $2400 he never said firm or we most likely wouldn't have tried to barter with him. But for him to say the part about I might as well kick him in the balls with my wife standing right there...that's just completely uncalled for! You're a professional, sure this isn't the first time someone has tried haggling a price with you and you just can't lose your cool like that. We live in a small town and word gets around quickly. I've worked many years in retail before my State job and there were times I absolutely wanted to lace customers out but I didn't, I grinned and bared it as customers are your lifeblood and if word got out that you treated your customers poorly it would be bad for business. This dealer could have handled this situation MUCH better, without vulgarity...especially in front of a woman!!!

Bad Experience at Dealers!!!
If he hadn't treated us so badly I might have kept going up...maybe to $2300 but after the way he acted I wouldn't give him the satisfaction of my business. He's not the only dealer around...there will be other boats, most likely sold by people with better manners too!

Bad Experience at Dealers!!!
Actually I started out at $1800 and came up to $2100!

Bad Experience at Dealers!!!
Okay, I was all excited about this 1989 Lund 16ft boat we found at a local dealers. We've been checking it out and it needed a little fixing up but overall it was in good shape. He was asking $2400 for the boat and factoring in all the extras like registration, tax, etc., etc. we decided to start low and work our way up hoping to get the boat for around $2100 so we listed the things that we would need to do like replacing the laminate wood trim that was peeling up and rotting in some spots and we started off at $1800 to which he immediately said no. I said okay, what's the lowest you're willing to go and he said I have it listed for $2400 and that's what I want for it. I said how about $1900...figuring he'd start dickering because nobody pays list price...especially on a used boat but he went into a rant about how he doesn't make much money on used boats and when he's asking $2400 for a boat and I offered him $1800 he said you might as well kick me in the balls. I was stunned quite frankly as I expected him to dicker like most dealers do so after quickly collecting myself I said how about $2100 and he turned his back on me and said "the price is $2400, if you want the boat for that I'll be inside" and he walked into his shop and slammed the door hard in our faces. My wife and I were again stunned...we were totally unprepared for this behavior. We conferred and ultimately decided that while we liked the boat a lot we simply were too turned off by the dealers reactions to reward his poor actions and meet his asking price. I guess sometimes the hardest thing to do is walk away...would you guys have done the same if you were in our shoes? I feel that this boat just wasn't meant to be and that if we're patient we'll find something better in the coming weeks.

Humminbird Helix 5 DI w/GPS vs. LOWRANCE Elite-5 CHIRP Fishfinder/Chartplotter with 83/200 + 455/800kHz Transducer, Nav+ Cartography
As the title suggests I'm trying to find out which unit is the best bang for your buck? The Humminbird is about $40 less expensive than the Lowrance. The boat I'm getting has an older Humminbird fish finder already, if i went with the Humminbird could i use the same wires already in place and just swap out the old transducer for the new one (or would the new transducer require a different mounting bracket)?

Stern Saver?
I read the reviews on the Cabelas item and some said they just used marine grade sealant and didn't drill any holes...they said it has worked great, would you recommend just using the sealant to attach something like this?

Lowrance Elite 4 w/CHIRP vs. Lowrance Hook 4 w/CHIRP
So is the Hook version the newest version?
-
Lowrance Elite 4 w/CHIRP vs. Lowrance Hook 4 w/CHIRP
Which one of these is the better deal? I would like a economical fish finder with CHIRP and GPS...don't need anything super fancy but would like color and the DI and CHIRP.

Is Carpet a Big Deal for Decks?
I've found a nice looking boat but it has some damage to the carpet on the rear deck which will require the carpet to be replaced, if the wood beneath that carpet is in good shape still should the damaged carpet be a deal breaker? Obviously one of my first questions will be how did the carpet get damaged to begin with but assuming that is all that's wrong with the boat should i pass it bye or seriously entertain buying it?
-
Stern Saver?
I saw this item called a Stern Saver for mounting transducer's etc. on so you don't have to drill your boat and while it looks nice it seems a little pricey at $50...are there cheaper alternatives or is this item worth the $50 and I should just stop being cheap?

V-hull or Semi-V Hull for Bass?
Yeah, I have a very active 5 year old son who is ALL BOY...lol. I intend for him to fish while out there which is why I don't want something with a high casting deck that he could easily topple over.

Yo-Zuri Hybrid...is it worth it?
This would be going on a new Pflueger President Limited Edition size 30 spinning reel, what size would you recommend (6lb)?

Attention Lund Pike D Owners!!!
How do you like your boat? What are the pros and cons? We have been looking for a small, reasonably priced fishing boat (Bass mostly) and found this one, a 1989 Lund Pike D 16ft., v-hull, 1989 Mariner 50hp outboard, a trailer in good condition (maybe need to replace the tires down the road), a newer (maybe 1 or 2 years old) Minn Kota Powerdrive 45lb thrust trolling motor (the thing looks brand new), rod storage, live well, bilge pump, 2 marine batteries (one for trolling motor and one for outboard/electric), one large 6 gallon gas tank and one smaller maybe 2.5 - 3 gallon tank, 3 good condition pedestal seats with a mount in place for a 4th (and the pedestal rod in storage so just missing the seat), the wife definitely likes the blue paint job and it looks new or at least recently done, it is definitely wider/more room than the Lowe we were looking at which probably has to do with the hull design...it just feels like a bigger boat even though both are 16ft long, it does weigh a little more than the Lowe (480lbs. vs. 435lbs.) but not enough to make a huge difference. It has a Humminbird fish finder (older one which I would replace, can you use the existing hook-ups and maybe just replace the transducer with the new models transducer?) compared to the Eagle fish finder on the Lowe. Some of the wood laminate is peeling up on the inside trim and rod locker but I figure if we got this boat we could either carpet those over or maybe use a marine paint and just paint them blue to match the boat.

Are there other copolymers that are better?

V-hull or Semi-V Hull for Bass?
The thing is this will be a family boat as my wife and son will be with me too so a jon boat wouldn't be feasible for three people. As long as I can get fairly shallow...enough to get close to the lilly pads near shore I think the v-hull would be a more versatile boat.

V-hull or Semi-V Hull for Bass?
Hi there, Okay, if you're just fishing your local ponds/lakes...nothing too big (maybe 75-100 acres) would a v-hull work for bass or will they not be able to get close enough to where the bass are to be an effective boat? I know I've asked a bazillion questions lately on my search for a boat but I just want to make sure that i get something I'll be happy with and will be able to do what I want it to do which is mainly bass fishing. As always, thanks for any input!!!

Boat Decision?
Okay, so we went over to the dealers tonight and the Lowe was in the shop and they were working on the electrical and charging the battery's. I must say that some of the luster of the Lowe was lost seeing it uncovered for the first time. The decking is solid but looks worn, the battery and gas tank sit literally under the rear pedestal seat, it doesn't have a bilge pump but rather the floor is creased in the middle with a floor drain beside the drivers seat and the dealer said if water came in the boat it would follow the crease to the floor drain and then would drain into two small wells in the back of the boat and then to get it out you would pull the plug in the back. It has A LOT of unpainted aluminum...all over both outside and inside (which my wife didn't like because the aluminum looked "old"). That being said we did find another boat that caught our eye, this one is a 1989 Lund Pike D 16ft., v-hull, 1989 Mariner 50hp outboard, a trailer in good condition (maybe need to replace the tires down the road), a newer (maybe 1 or 2 years old) Minn Kota Powerdrive 45lb thrust trolling motor (the thing looks brand new), rod storage, live well, bilge pump, 2 marine batteries (one for trolling motor and one for outboard/electric...the Lowe just has one battery), one large 6 gallon gas tank and one smaller maybe 2.5 - 3 gallon tank, 3 good condition pedestal seats with a mount in place for a 4th (and the pedestal rod in storage so just missing the seat), the wife definitely likes the blue paint job and it looks new or at least recently done, the Lund is definitely wider/more room than the Lowe which probably has to do with the hull design...it just feels like a bigger boat even though both are 16ft long, it does weigh a little more than the Lowe (480lbs. The dealer is asking $2800 for the Lowe and $2400 for the Lund. We're kind of leaning towards the Lund now as while we think we could get the dealer down to $2400 on the Lowe we think we can get him down to $2000 (possibly lower) on the Lund...what do you guys (and gals...lets be politically correct) think based on the above knowledge?

Yo-Zuri Hybrid...is it worth it?
I'm waffling back and forth between going with mono or going with flouro and then I remembered people talking about a co-polymer line which blends both and i just wondered if it's worth it? I think you can get 600yds. on Amazon for like $12. Does the diameter match up with flouro/mono or is it like braid and doesn't match up lb. for lb.?

Boat Decision?
What would you use to seal the screws?
-
Boat Decision?
Yup, i would cut out two squares in the top and use door hinges so that they open and close...just not sure how to actually attach it to the boat?
