I lost a part of me today.
Problem is, i dont know which neighbor it was... Theres 3 houses across the street, each one with 4 or 5 families living in it (you know the type)... Nobody will man up, they all just point fingers at each other

I lost a part of me today.
I feel ya man... Just lost my hunting dog last month, but she was only 4 years old... Shot by a neighbor for chasing his chickens I dont know if i was more sad or mad.. Either way, nothing i could do (legally) She just became a grandma 2 weeks prior to the incident... So i got my pick of the litter...... Puppies have a way of making a guy feel better!

Quantum Throttle
I prefer to buy from Academy, they did me right on my last purchase... I had issues with my Abu Orra after 6 months of use.. They exchanged it no questions asked..... Then i got greedy and exchanged the rod too, they didnt blink an eye, great service! Saved me from a warranty headache! Their site doesnt show the supreme, only the president... And for Okuma they carry the Inspira and down Also looking at the Lews tournament speed metal..... And i still havnt completely ruled the Sahara out

Quantum Throttle
Havnt even looked at Okuma.. Thought they were more saltwater oriented..... Ill check em out

Quantum Throttle
Thanks blubass The preaident is on my radar too... The titanium spool lip and "sure click" bail are the main attractions..... I have 2 old Shimano's on my shelf... The Sahara has a worn out bail spring that wont close, and the line actually wore grooves in the bail wire..... And the Sienna still works fine, but the spool lip it chipped so bad it started cutting my line when i casted I replaced the sienna with another sienna few years ago, its still going strong... The new Sahara looks sharp, and i like the 6.2 ratio, but im weary of it because of the problem mine had.... Ive used nothing but Shimano for the past 15 years, just thought id try something different this time.....

Quantum Throttle
Not a verry popular reel i guess?? I shoulda asked to see one in the box, probably just the display was broken.... Figured someone here had one and might wanna check theirs for the same issue Btw... I didn't break it... Handle was loose, i held the rotor to tighten it and felt something give..... The handle can turn free of the rotor and the rotor can turn free of the handle.... I could see this being a big problem on sharp hook sets, or even playing a hefty fish

Struggling to learn to run a casting rod
Speaking on accuracy... One thing i noticed (realized) on a BC, especially on a side arm cast... There is a small bit of centrifugal force applied by the reel With a spinning reel, there is little to no resistance on the line coming off the spool... On a BC, the line must pull the spool in order to gain distance.. If the spool pulls back, even a tiny bit, it changes the flight path of the lure into an arch....... For a crude analogy, think of a teather ball.. The ball wants to go strait, but the rope and pole pull it into an arch Same relationship between the spool and lure, on a much smaller scale.... To me it feels like the higher the brake setting, the greater the arch How does this help??... Not sure, just an observation..... For me, i started thinking more about my let off and brake setting...... In the end, its all feel

Struggling to learn to run a casting rod
I had to start over on baitcasters... Had one stolen 10 years ago, just got a new one 6 months ago...... And its not like riding a bicycle! Overhead casts are smoother for me... More range of motion and less "snappy" I have 2 hands, so why not use em, its not a style contest (i wouldn't win anyway) I read turning the reel sideways (on its axis) slows the spool down (reducing backlash), dont know if that's true, but a confidence booster none the less (try it) Increasing distance is not step one... Just get the bait in the water... Over and over and over and over (and over)... Practice makes... You know the rest Cast in the yard, pitch in the house... I can now put a T-rig in my wifes purse from the fridge in the kitchen Guess what it boiled down to for me was... Use the reel!... Find a "comfort cast", go out and fish!

Quantum Throttle
Thinking of getting a decent quality spinning set up for father's day (price range -$200).... I read up a little on this Quantum Throttle, the unibody design intrigues me... So i stopped by the local Academy to hold one The reel definitely feels more solid than any ive held.. Its as smooth as any new reel in its price range should be... But one thing bothered me.... While fooling with it, i noticed that i could actually spin the rotor wrong way around with little effort (yes, anti-reverse switch was on)..... None of my reels do this, and neither did any others in the store I think this model just came out last year, i couldnt find any useful reviews online..... Who has one?... You like it?... And does yours have the same problem as the display at Academy?...... Or perhaps was the display just abused (by people like me) and broken???

dealing with rude ignorant people while fishing
Dont think ive had this problem while fishing... But duck hunting public land is a different story!...... Nobody with a brain would pick a fight knowing everyone there is packing a 12 gauge, but some people seem to have no brain Best advice... Smile... Theyre angry, so they want you angry too.. Dont give them the pleasure

Fishing log
Started on paper yesterday... A pocket sized pad for jotting down notes on the water.. And a spiral note book for organizing afterward May make a spread sheet later Anyone try printing copies of the lake map and marking fish by location?.. Maybe with a number for reference, and notes listed with each number on the back...... Kinda like saving waypoints if you dont have electronics

The spread sheet is a good idea... Im prob the only guy on the planet without a computer, but there are mobile spread sheet apps too... I think excel is one of them Much appreciated!... Would love to see what ya got that could help me design my own Sending pm

How do you keep your records?... How much info do you keep? Ive tried several of the cell phone apps.. But couldnt find one i liked..... Any opinions on the best app?... Or is it pen and paper for you?....... If so, how do you keep it dry?? Is there a such thing as keeping too much info?... So much you wont wanna read thru all of it later?.... Or do you only keep the basics??..... Time? Temp? Weather? Location?... Other?

how often do you catch fish?
That's interesting... Maybe worthy of a whole nother thread

Need for high end spinning reel??
Good answers! On the durability side, my 1st Sienna is 10 years old, i never once cleaned or oiled it (didnt know to back then) and it still works fine.. I only quit using it because the spool is all chipped from me tripping and falling in the rocks one too many times My "new" Sienna is about 3 yrs old now, and i love it... But i just bought a Diawa Tatula BC, and i find it unpleasing to put it down and use my cheap spinning gear.... So i feel y'all there!

Need for high end spinning reel??
So ive learned you get what you pay for with a baitcast reel.. With the high tech braking systems, bearings and drag systems But why the expensive spinning reels??.... Ive always said the only thing separating a $40 reel from a $100 reel is a few ball bearings Barring the really cheapo reels of course.... For $40 you can pick up a reel of any brand with an instant anti reverse and front drag... A $100 reel isnt gonna cast any better, that comes down to line and rod choice.... Basically all a spinning reel does is pick up slack I have a Shimano Sienna that im happy with and plan to buy another eventually.... If you were a salesman, how would you convince me to buy a Symetre instead??

fishing alone or with a partner?
Alone!... By far! I only like fishing with people who enjoy it as much as i do... And that list is short!

how often do you catch fish?
Nobody answered the big question... How often do you catch fish??? What's a good day?.. Whats a bad day??... And who's man enough to admit getting skunked on occasion??? I thought i was pretty good and knew alot about bass fishing until i joined this site.... Ive been humbled down to average after reading all the solid tips and advice from alot of y'all! Me.... I catch fish more often than not... 5 - 10 is a good day... 1 or 2 is a slow day... 0 is ok if im getting bit (theres always next weekend)..... Then there are those days when i wonder if the lochness monster is under my boat scaring anything and everything that swims near me?!?! I fish from a bare bones jon boat.. Trolling motor only, no electronics.. And honestly, i catch most of my fish casting at the shore line..... Shore anglers are no doubt limited to and from some areas.... But you have your advantages too Boat control is a whole nother learning curve!... The ground doesnt move when the wind blows, you have a better feel and more control over your baits (ive lost more fish than i care to admit fooling with the trolling motor)..... And since you have less area to fish, you're forced to fish it more thoroughly, how many fish you think the average boater flies over "running n gunning"?? Heres some advice you wont see on here (and hopefully wont get me banished)...Grab a couple dozen minnows and some bobbers, toss em in the spots your fishing and relax for a day... This way you'll know if the fish just arent there or if youre doing something wrong Step 2 is learning techniques... Step 1 is finding fish to use them on

fishing for the hell of it
Fishing is relaxing... Bass fishing is relaxing in a different way For me, when im bass fishing, im completely focused on bass fishing!... Nothing else runs across my mind, i leave the real world behind.. What bills? What job? What kids? (ha ha!)... Its a different kinda pressure, all im thinking about is the next cast! If i wanna just kick back and enjoy being on the lake.. Ill go for crappie or catfish

12' Jon Boat mods and weight limit questions
Heres me MDbowhunter is right, i wouldn't put a raised deck on a typical 12'... I wont even put swivel seats in mine, tried it, didnt like how the boat leans when i turn around in the seat... So instead i use coolers, and they double as storage (or coolers) Mine is only a 32" bottom, the wider 12 foots are more stable... Ive seen a 48" with a front deck, and it looked fine My floor only covers 8 of the 12 feet... Saves weight, since i have to lift it into the truck bed (no trailer) and cost (1 sheet instead of 2)... Its 1/2" ply, sealed w fiberglass resin and has 3/4" styrofoam underneath I know what everyone is thinking.. "Dont take the benches out, theyre structural"... This is true, but with this skinny boat, it didnt make much difference on the side walls... The bottom however did get flimsy, but the plywood solved that problem

12' Jon Boat mods and weight limit questions
I have a 12'.. I weigh 220 and ive had a rider my weight or more in it several times..... But i will NOT take it on rough water!.. I fish a 30 acre lake, waves never get too high...... Only time ill take it on a big lake is when i know itll be a calm day Wood is just more weight... Aluminum doesn't float, the boat just displaces water... If it weighs less than that amount of water, it floats.. If it weighs more, it sinks (thanks Bill Nye) This boat was given to me.. If i were buy one, it would be a 14'

Road trip fantasy
Couldnt agree more with this!!!... Id rather catch nothing myself than have someone practically catch them for me! The lotto... My dream... I want my own lake!... Maybe 2, one here in my home state (Texas) and one in the wife's home state (Colorado) But since youre talking road trips, id have to visit Alaska again... Lived there for a few months when i was 14, my kinda place!!!.... Cant pull my boat behind a plane, so youd see me in an rv... Gonna need 2 boats, a pontoon if the family is going, and..... Hmm.... Ive fished my little jon boat so long, i don't even know what id buy for me if i had the $$$...?

Strikes Close Up - How to Handle
Ive had this happen too, always at the end of a retrieve when im not paying attention and have no time to react... Best i can think, finish this retrieve before thinking about the next cast.... But thats easier said than done Worst time was in a foot of muddy water.. I couldn't see the fish, but i know it was big cause i could see the trail of mud it kicked up in a zigzag pattern away from my boat, and a couple of free standing weeds almost came uprooted as fish plowed through them..... Reminded me of Jurassic Park, when the raptors are running through the jungle but all you see are the trees moving

What do you bring bank fishing?
Critters can make bank fishing interesting! One night i was catfishing, using glow sticks as strike indicators and a racoon grabbed the glow stick and yanked my rod off the holder... I had to chase it into the bushes to get my rod back..... I let him keep the glow stick
