switch hitting
I always cast with my right hand and just after the lure is going in the air I'll switch hands and stop the spool with my left thumb. This works great with buzzbaits!! Coordination is a must!!

You guys from Texas
I am in Longview Texas. Don't get me wrong. So far everyone out here has been great and very friendly. I also like the area I am in and I think that Longview is a great place to live, but not to fish. I have caught some good amount of fish out here and some nice sized ones too, but out of 3 months of fishing the good fishing constituted about 5-6 days of that time. The other days adds up to about 20-30 miles of driving to a location and nothing on the line.

You guys from Texas
Texas fishing for me has been outright terrible! It seems that only if you have a boat, then you can catch fish. I don't have a boat so I walk the bank in pure utter disgust everyday wishing I was back in Alabama fishing the Coosa River.

Creeks and Winter
I have a question about fishing creeks in the Winter. I am currently fishing a spot that is basically a small creek behind a dam that feeds into another large lake and I was wondering if the Bass might stay in the creek or go about 30-40 miles up stream into the lake it feeds into? The creek has both shallow and some nice pools that go about 10 feet deep and from what I hear the Winters aren't that bad here in NE Texas. Maybe around 30-40 degrees on average.

What would you have done???
The other guy was fishing minnows on both occasions. I went again tonight and tried everything all you guys mentioned and I only got one little Bass from 3 hours of fishing. Conditions the same and the baitfish were also the same. I have only 4 days of good fishing out of almost 3 months out here. I'm starting to worry!

What would you have done???
Texas, Lake Gladewater, water was moderately clear, temp during the day was in the lower 80's, and the time I was fishing it was somewhere between the upper 60's and lower 70's. Good amount of light around the dock I was fishing too.

What would you have done???
I moved around and hit the place from every possible angle!! What about tubes in that situation? Maybe throw in the middle of the baitfish and let it slowly drop, drag/bump it and reel back in? I have never fished tubes or flukes and really have no clue on how to.

What would you have done???
I was fishing from the bank 2 nights ago and caught 3 bass on a jig while another guy was fishing live bait and he got nothing. Last night I was at the same place and got nothing while the same guy from the night before reeled in 3 Crappie and about 5 bass. I fished jigs, poppers, buzzbaits, and even a shallow diving Rapala. All black in color except for the Rapala. We were fishing an inlet where it starts at about 1 foot and drops to about 8 and the place was full of small baitfish going nuts on the top. Is there something else I should have tried???

Thoughts on Topwater and "Big" bass
Well, I have to take what I said about buzzbaits and small Bass back earlier on this thread. This past weekend started off with 2-3 pounders and then a 6 pounder!! After that I pulled in 5 more small ones for a total of 8 Bass in one morning! The next day I managed to pull in 13 Bass!!! All were small, but were on a buzzbait. [my specially designed one!]

Thoughts on Topwater and "Big" bass
I thought about this last week after I caught a Bass that I couldn't believe actually even tried to hit my buzzbait!! After some more thinking, I came to the conclusion that I have caught ALOT of Bass on topwaters, but very few would be considered "keepers". I mainly fish them now because the waters I am fishing in have ALOT of timber and I am tired of breaking off lures everytime I fish. I hate to re-tie lures as I am usually on a time limit with my fishing.

Thrifty Tips
Used worms make great trailers. Plus you can just build your own jigs, spinners, and buzzbaits for as low as 70-80 cents a piece when you buy in bulk from certain places!! Just imagine buying 50 painted or unpainted buzzbait heads for 18 bucks then buying 50 skirts for 11 bucks followed up by the blades for around 10 bucks for 50 pieces! Jigs are even cheaper to make when you buy the bulk materials. I don't know about you, but this Winter when the bite is really hard, I'll be making lures!!!

bass not hitting
Peek a boo, they see you!!! I have been in the same situation several times before. They will pay attention to you and not the lures. For all they know you might be something that is trying to get them. [And you are] From my past experiences they will look at the lure and then back at you. Try hitting the same spot at night with a lantern in front of you shining toward the water and throw topwater or even dark plastics/jigs. Oh yeah, get there before it is pitch black and turn the light on!

Lizard and rigs
I have had really good luck with the chaurtreuse colors in the dead of Summer and recently, after throwing everything I can imagine to get Bass I pulled in 3 off one yesterday.

Longview,TX fishing clubs
How can I contact them? I looked them up on Google and found a club listings site, but they seemed to be without a website.

any fly rodders
I started fly fishing when I was 11 years old [now 31] When I was a little tike I loved it. Now for some reason I can't get back into it, but still use one on occasion. Pulled in a good bit of bass off one, but you get alot of bream most of the time.

Ever got your lure back that you broke off??
Kind of a spinoff of the "Ever caught a rod" thread. I broke off a shallow diving Shad Rap once on a tree limb about 7' over the water. About 3 weeks later I am fishing the same creek and after catching a 12 lb Striper, I was walking down the bank and there was my Shad Rap!! In fact, I used it today! My father lives on the river and when the water drops in the Winter, he will walk the bank and check every stump/log he can and usually racks up on lures that were broke off.

have you ever caught a rod?
A friend of mine caught a plastic lawn chair once! The funny side of the story is that one night we were Catfishing and the guy's property we were fishing on had a few too many beers and fell into the water taking the chair with him. While we were telling our drunken buddy about the incident he replied "I knew I was missing a chair!!" "I think that there might be another one down there somewhere!" Sure enough, I caught the other one! My wife isn't a big fisher, but she has caught in one night a : rock [explain that one] 2 coke bottles, and a turtle! I always give her a lure that she won't lose and one time, after giving her a spoon, she pulled in a 3 lb Bass! Go figure..

Japanese Bass
Are the Bass in Japan natural or where they brought to the area? I was wondering because I was thinking about trying to get Bass fishing going in China. I know it might sound whacky, but the market there would be amazing. I actually own land in China and was thinking about starting there. They have alot of people who like to fish [mainly live bait] for the native fish and they would go nuts over Bass! If anyone knows anything about Japan Bass fishing or even China for that matter please let me know. Thanks in advance!

Do Gar spook away Bass?
In the past month I have had Gar hit a swimming jig, spinnerbait, top water popper, buzzbait, plastic worms, and just about anything else that has been swam by them!! My friend was fishing a popper that he has never caught anything off of and soon as it hit the water... BAM,, pulled in a Gar. All of these Gar that hit the above lures were on top [visible] and chased the lure until they bit it or ran into the bank! Yesterday, I was reeling a buzzbait back to the bank and noticed the water was waving [kind of scared me because I didn't know what the heck it was] behind the lure. After I got the lure out of the water a Gar RAN into the bank and started going nuts until it was back away from the bank. On another note, I caught a 9 lb Drum on a Rattletrap and a week later had a Drum [same exact place as the Rattletrap incident] come up and snap at my swimming jig. The second one was at LEAST 15+!!! Go figure.

Do Gar spook away Bass?
I do see the gar there coming up top a bit, but the water I have been fishing is coming from a small dam just up the creek and it is constantly flowing. Could there still be low D.O. there? There are also lilly pads growing in the area as well as alot of timber in the water. [mainly Bald Cypress along the bank] It's hard to really tell, but the water seems clear and the bottom is REALLY dark.

Do Gar spook away Bass?
I have seen alot of Gar in the place I am fishing and have had little luck with the Bass there. However, I have fished a small pond/lake where there were Gar and caught 6 Bass in about 1 hours time. The place I am fishing now is a creek that goes about 10 feet deep in some places. The pond I mentioned earlier is about the same depth. The reason I ask this is I have heard a friend of mine, who is a biologist, state that Gar will feed and attack Bass.
