Generally, a spinnerbait weighs about 40% more than the weight listed on the package. While there is no formal standard for making them all the best people designing baits use the same system. If a bait is listed as 1/2oz that is just the weight of the lead (or tungsten) itself which does not include blades, skirts, etc.
I am willing to bet you can throw spinnerbaits on those rods without problems. Just try a 3/8oz average spinnerbait and see how it does. Parabolic rods the weight rating doesn't matter as must for me, I throw baits above and below the rating all the time.
I see you are from Columbia , Maryland which I am familiar with. I would say overall for the state a double willow nickel bladed white bait works best. You can message me on the specific places you are fishing and I might be able to provide better recommendations? Overall in the State of Maryland nickel blades and white skirts work best.
Wonder how many times someone who isn't as greedy gets away with this? A single 3oz sinker in a 5lb fish probably wouldn't be noticed? These guys stuffed 8lbs of lead in 5 fish and though nobody would notice.
Since I have a few "Spare" lures I have been donating to Jr Bassmaster clubs the past couple of years. Currently I donate stuff to 2 Maryland teams, 1 West Virginia, 1 Pennsylvania, and an Illinois team. The local Maryland kids make out as they help me out at some of the shows locally. One kid in particular reminded me of myself when I was his age so I asked him what baits he would buy if he had a lot of money? His father seemed a little embarrassed that he couldn't buy his son whatever he wanted so I told a 12 year old to lie about the value of the Megabass Visions I gave him.
