Buffalo, NY/WNY Fishing
I thought about it a bunch of times and went there once. I fished a couple spots didn't catch anything. I couldn't figure out where to fish not a lot of shore access from what I could see? It bothered me that i couldn't throw a canoe in any of it. I might have saw you there I saw someone working the shoreline right as I was taking my canoe out of the water. There was some kinda kayak class there or something as soon as they all got on the water I got off the water.

I tried the river north of the grand island bridge this morning nothing not even a bite 2.5 hours. The floating grass was horrendous picked up grass on almost every cast. Then I tried Hyde Park for the second time in my life. I finally see why so many of you fish there. I only landed three. I had more fish pick up my lure and some how not get hooked than I can ever remember happening. Frustrating but at least I received bites.

I saw some of your pics thats why I am going. I just wasn't sure if it was only an spring/early summer spot? I fish a spot like that in the outer harbor I do well till the end of june then it kinda shuts down. I figured I would try it regardless as it seemed like there were some spots weren't choked with weeds. There was a ton of floating grass that looked like it would be annoying though. If I can't come up with a better plan I think I will be at bonds lake sunday to. I will start on the big lake then try the smaller use one of my inflatables......

I have done well in the big lake at bonds and ok at the two smaller lakes. Only shore access for the bigger lake. It was weird though last year I tried fishing the big lake and I didn't have one bite or even see a fish? it was weird the lake just felt dead. I think they treat it for weeds sometimes not sure if that could shut down the bite and make fish scarce? There are definitely some huge grass carp in all three lakes and if you spook them they will spook you buy moving a ton of water! Some look as big as a small tarpon!

I have heard of people doing good there in the spring. I also have heard of people catching some monster walleyes there at night. Once again I think its spring early summer. I stopped there the other day made a few casts but my heart wasn't in it. My GF was there and even if she says she doesn't mind watching me fish I still feel funny about fishing while she stands there. I'm surprised you can fish there on winbert dr. It looks like a private neighborhood pond? There are some real good ponds right near there on winbert but I have been chased out by sheriffs so many times I don't go back there anymore.

I'm used to fishing shallow weedy ponds where 3/8 or one ounce I think would pick up a lot of debris. I fish weightless, or 1/16 mostly. occasionally 1/8. My carolina rig I even fish with 1/8 ounce. I have seen fishing shows and youtube videos with heavy weights to punch through weed mats. I never seem to find anywhere I could do that. Everywhere I fish if its matted on the surface it is usually thick all the way to the bottom underneath. At least it seems that way.- Buffalo, NY/WNY Fishing

Well I think that settles it I will be coming out your way thurs. It was down to New Albion lake in the south towns or drive east to hulberton. I think I am going to have to try hulberton. I am super curious about a spot you can catch fish on a what looks looks like GIANT ribbon tail texas rigged worm. I mean that ribbon tail worm in your pick looks like something for fishing the everglades in florida. I seem to have to downsize everywhere around here end up fishing 5 or 6 inch shakey head worms mostly. or this little three inch grub that is actually my go to bait right now. I will let you know when I'm there I will probably get up early and try to be there early like 6 am. At the latest if I sleep in I will be there at 8ish. If I am catching I have been know to stay till dark if not not catching or catching dinks I am usaually a 5-6 hour fisherman.- Buffalo, NY/WNY Fishing
Thats awesome that its so close to your house! I will be coming from kenmore ny so were talking about an hour ride but I don't mind a ride for a hog. I have an inflatable canoe. Where would I park to launch for hulberton. I see the one your saying closest to fancher that is posted it but it looks like there are three others the big one, one smaller to the north, and another smaller one to the south across canal road? This may be my thurs. day off road trip. In case I get skunked you ever fish the canal by the quarry any luck? also when I was looking for the hulberton quarries I saw what looks like bass ponds around holley central school district? are those fishable?- Buffalo, NY/WNY Fishing
is hulberton quarry in hulberton? or is it in holley ny? I see what looks like quarries in both places? and on the web it seems that hulberton quarries is always mentioned with holley ny? from lyndonville do you go toward the lake below the falls or above the the falls? I have only fished that weedy area right above falls and didn't really get anything.- Buffalo, NY/WNY Fishing
l Not sure what was up with the last post it wouldn't let me delete it and I didn't mean to do it. I fished the lower niagara today. There was a ton of floating grass. It was weird not sure why? or if its usual this time of year? I know its known for moss but there was that and what looked like tons of bunches of floating grass. I managed 2 small brown bass one on a tube and one on a spinner. Stopped along the upper river on my way home between grand island bridge and niagara falls. I saw the same bunches of what looked like floating grass everywhere? so I didn't bother. I have to figure out somewhere I can catch fish from shore or canoe by thursday. As that is my next day off. Anybody do well fishing today?- Ned rig?
My PB LMB of 8.5# was caught in jacksonville fl on a zoom shakey head worm watermelon red flake. weedless no weight. one of my favorite presentations. Yes you get some attention by small fish but the big ones eat it too! At least it doesn't have a paddletail that goby and panfish can pull off and ruin after one cast lol!- Ned rig?
ya I guess your right about the vertical line tie. those jig heads and the vertical line tie just don't like me in heavy cover pick up all kinda garbage.- Ned rig?
I never really fished those. I never saw a reason to over 1/8 or 1/16 worm weight and a gamakatsu g-lock or offset worm hook? why bother?- Ned rig?
I fish slop that no spinnerbait is getting through! you'd have trouble getting a buzzbait through a lot of it- Ned rig?
Now your thinking! that looks awesome! I have to try it and if I like it I may even take those weed guards off. Thank you for the tip! you fish pretty heavy cover with it? I seem to have trouble with jigs with a 90 degree hook eyelet picking up grass too. You? in fact I tried a new way to rig a tube weedless yesterday. Stupid tube I think its called? Tube was weedless hook eyelet however picked up all kinds of stuff.......- Buffalo, NY/WNY Fishing
So you feel you pick up less vegetation on a drop shot? I thought a drop shot had the hook exposed? I mean I have fished a drop shot with a texposed hook but it seems like that dulls the action compared to just having the most of the bait hookless like on a on a traditional drop shot I see on youtube and fishing shows. Even then I find that the weight of the drop shot picks up vegetation so I barely use it. Do you know something about a drop shot I don't if so do tell! As far as hyde park goes I fished it from the island down past the bridge about half way to waterfall (which I didn't know was there until you just said it and I looked). I fished a texas rig and a drop shot didn't notice much weeds in that section but it seemed pretty shallow and honestly devoid of life. This was last year though I guess I should try it again. I really want to try along the upper river north of the grand island bridge where "justjigger" has some photos on here of nice smallies. Not sure if its only an early summer spot or if it is fishable and will produce now? I also don't know how much current is there? I got used to fishing heavy current in the lower river but seem to flounder when it comes to soft plastics like a t-rig in heavy current. I have figured out how to fish spinners and spoons in heavy current and even two way rigs. Cast up stream reel in slack after it sinks and either let it drift with the current down streamand retrieve or reel in fast enough that it comes right at you from up current and your retrieve is over for the most part by the time it gets to you. I have trouble figuring out where to cast with soft plastics in current and how much weight to use? I had some luck in spring with a 3/8 texas rigged white 3 inch mister twister in the lower river. I would cast up stream and keep popping it up as it bounced across the bottom. It seemed to get jammed between rocks a lot and It would only work for a couple days every spring and then I couldn't get bit any more doing the same thing. So there must be a better way to do it but I don't know what it is?- Ned rig?
Yah what I tried was not a traditional ned rig. I was trying to figure out by myself how to make something look like a ned rig using the TRD but without a jig head that had a big hook sticking out of it. I have no luck with any kind of weed guard not picking up grass and moss so I try to avoid them all together except for the few times I have fished a wacky rig. I just was dropping the wacky rig in holes in cover so weed guard picking up crap didn't seem to be an issue. Its trying to pull the rig to shore or an inflatable canoe that seems to be a problem. As far as fishing cover or no cover as a shore fisherman mostly and even in a canoe mostly small shallow lakes I fish cover mostly because thats what there is I rarely find an open bank to throw anything at......- Ned rig?
I actually bought some of those shroom jig heads with the weedguards. I didn't bother with them though since I have tried using hooks with those same weed guards in the weedy places I fish and the weed guards pick up grass and debris. The only thing that seems to get through the weeds ins texas rig, texposed rig, or carolina rig. Maybe I bought this ned rig stuff for nothing?! lol. Wouldn't be the first time I bought something for fishing and didn't use it! I think I have about ten# of stuff just from this year that I may never use. My brain comes up with ideas for all kind of ways to catch when I'm not catching or catch more while I'm surfing the internet. I'd say 2/3 don't pan out and I go back to the old stand bys.......................- Ned rig?
Anybody have any tips on fishing or rigging a ned rig or neko rig in moderate to heavy cover. I mostly fish small ponds and lakes with lots of weeds but would like to try fishing the ned rig. I actually thought I would teach myself. I tried today. 1/16 nail weight, mann's TRD worm, and small wacky rig hook with weed guard. fished it for only five minutes because every time I tried to move it it would pick up grass or get caught? seemed like I could have dropped it into holes and picked it straight up and down fine but moving it towards me seemed impossible? anyone have any luck fishing the "ned rig" in cover? if so how? I would love to be able to kinda pull it through everything the way i do a 1/16 ounce texas rig!- Buffalo, NY/WNY Fishing
The first spot I fished in lancaster is on pavement rd. There are a bunch of quarries and lakes in housing developments over there. There are are two quarries on the left before you get to westwood park( on the right) kinda in a construction site and along the bike path. I almost fished them today. I know there are big bass and pike in there because I have fished them before. Just don't really know if they enforce no trespassing laws? I mean technically its posted and private. Few years ago I fished it and it looked like it was a park there were so many other people fishing there. I didn't see anyone else there today so I got scared and didn't try it. I used to fish the quarries over by billo road and there is a lake by the depew service station and there are some awesome lakes in wheatfield off of liberty rd. I have been ticketed at all of them. I try to avoid tickets for fishing. - Buffalo, NY/WNY Fishing
