Lost my biggest! Red Shad Bull Hog.
ahhh, im used to catching at max 2lb'rs on the banks of fort loudoun lake. im usually throwing 4" worms and small craws. Today, I decided i was going to fish a little place behind a skate park that no one ever fishes. I decided to go a little bigger bait this time using a Red Shad Bull Hog (weightless). Just as I thought it was over and I had casts every little piece I threw it back out as far as I could and on the fall Bam! The pressure was so hard I thought I had caught some large bottom strolling fish. Finally get him up to the top and i had to hop him over some large rocks to get to the bank..everything seemed fine and I as soon as i pulled to get him on the bank the hook fell out. I have gotten bigger bass before using this same lure but they always seem to get loose but I have never had one this large. The struggles of the newby fisher. ha!

Texas rig, carolina rig, jigs and weights hate me
yes small 1/8 oz bullet style. yes i have a spinning reel. lake. i woud use those sinkers that go in your lure but im usually fishing smaller size bait like 3 - 4" i actually bought those 3mm worm rattles (the smallest they have) and they are not really small enough for them either. thx j bab! i kind of understand what hes saying i actually started doing this a little but i always thought it was wrong for presentation. nice!

Texas rig, carolina rig, jigs and weights hate me
yea, i thought it was at least half common but when it happens every day i use them it seems like an issue. ive tried everything it seems except my line isnt too large braid 12lb. it happens so much i know instantly. after i drop the slack i even walk left and shake walk right and shake today i was even able to walk up on large rocks right in front of it and it seems its getting way up under there and i have no more options. not sure if its the current/wake or what.

Texas rig, carolina rig, jigs and weights hate me
im so angry right now. I usually don't get mad when i lose lures or have to break my line but this was it. I have yet to be able to fish from any location off the banks without my lure getting hung under a rock or something in the water. It doesn't matter what I fish with if it is not rigged weightless it gets hung. what am i doing wrong? anything? if i add a small 1/8 oz weight to be able to cast further it still happens. i think these things hate me. rigged up a carolina rig and a texas rig last night with a swivel and within 1 hour this morning they both got hung on rocks in the water. no matter the area they always seem to find that one rock and craw in it.. im not talking about right on the bank where the water stops i usually pull over that when it comes back in.. im talking about anywhere in the water that i cant get to at least 5ft away from the bank. I was so scared one day i tied on a bass jig and put a dang float on my line so it wouldnt reach the bottom (ha!)

Now how do I catch these suckers?
The fish i have no idea but i did see him today and he looked black. he spit it out immediately before i had the chance to pull. As far as the bait its my little "bug" i created by cutting the claws and body off of the BPS incredible craws. so its probably around 1" heres a pic of both the original and cut versions. after today no luck getting him im going to try a live worm.

Now how do I catch these suckers?
so, .. i decided to stop by a little area after work one day to test out my tiny bugs i created with bass plastics. just messing around i started noticing a ton of little hideouts for fish like underneath rocks, underneath random wood blocks someone threw in the water etc.. so i move my bait over to em and bam! they suck it in and i have no way to set the hook. ive noticed i only get 1-2 shots at the catch because every time it gets harder to make them bite it. my question is how would one catch these fish without being able to set the hook? do u know of any tricks to use? also, i have no idea what species these fish are..my guess is there all different but thats the excitement.

Where did they get the name "Red Shad"
very interesting indeed. makes a lot of sense one thing about highlights is they say chartreuse is a good color but I have yet to get a fish to even nudge with it.. there is an exception with the tomato core squirmin worm by bps. But, the inside of the worm is orange so I always assumed it was the orange since chartreuse never worked any other time. Im new to the waters so im just learning what working and whats not.. thx a lot! oh and i will try out your theories on top of the red shad.

Where did they get the name "Red Shad"
I have been studying my fishing log and red shad seems to be a nice color for afternoon fishing in my area. I googled a bit trying to figure out what bait this mimic'd and saw that there was no such thing as a red colored shad or at least shown anywhere. Where did they get the color "Red Shad" from?
