  1. Well according to the DEC spokesperson, the DEC will no longer ticket individuals taking pictures of out of season fish (article). So even though it may be that the rules, you're not going to get fined or jail for it.
  2. I don't. I mostly fish with jerkbaits, and I catch everything under the sun on them. Was trying to get after some smallmouth in New York this weekend, ended up catching a 37-in muskie. Walleye too. Bass are C&R in NY when the regular season isn't open.
  3. Not true in NY, they received so much backlash about that law they repealed it a few weeks later. Enforcing such a law is idiotic and a waste of taxpayer dollars, and is going to do next to nothing for the fish. Unless stocked pellet heads possibly, which are mostly dead by summer anyway.
  4. Okay I googled and googled and can't find any information on this, surprisingly. I would guess that the rules vary by state and species, but just trying to find out for sure. I only fish New York in Pennsylvania right now, so if anybody has any information specific to the states that would be great. It would really suck to have to throw back a potential state record breaking fish.
  5. I've been lookin hard for a lighter weight jerkbait rod and Lew's KVD seems to be it. I've read that while IM8 blanks are lighter, they're more prone to breaking. I'll be going for the MH 6'8". I do have a tendency to beat the hell out of my rods though, ripping out snags and constantly smacking it into stuff since I'm a bank fisherman. Will also be spooling it with 30lb braid which is a little stronger than what line the rod is rated for. I'm I gunna break this thing within days? I also catch a good amount of pike and they'll occasionally get pretty violent out of the water and mess up a rod before I can get em unhooked.
  6. Ok so I had a Fenwick HMG spinning rod for a couple of years. Loved it. Problem is they're not as durable as I need them to be. Wrecked a couple of guides, and yesterday broke it in half because I must have gouged the graphite too deep with a razor knife when scraping off epoxy to replace the first guide. Fenwick did offer me a 45% discount on a new rod, however they don't have any medium 7ft 2pc rods in stock until December because I guess they're being redesigned. I bought a medium Ugly Stik Elite because Ugly stiks are fantastic for the money, however I've only had medium heavies before. They state that the medium is fast action, however this is untrue. The thing bends like a wet noodle. Knew it soon as I pulled out of the box because the way it wobbles around when you jiggle it. Same goes for other spinning rods I've purchased in the $30-$60 range that claim to be fast action. Being a shore fisherman, someone whom is not capable of taking great care of stuff, and fishing places where big toothies lurk, rods do not tend to last me too long so there's not a lot of sense in me spending more than $50-$60 on a rod. Are there any true fast action mediums out there in this price range? Needing to be 2 piece as well doesn't help my situation a whole lot. I could always up it to medium heavy for added stiffness, but this doesn't really seem necessary for a river bassin rod and my wrist prefers the lighter weight of a medium. I've also managed to wrestle some 10lb hybrid stripers and fairly big pike with my HMG...if it's a true fast action medium you essentially get a bit more power with it. I just absolutely cannot tolerate action less than fast, the rod limpness just causes so many issues with my fishing style.
  7. I've decided I need to upgrade from a tackle bag to a tackle backpack, a lot because my bag is a bit heavy and causing me shoulder problems. I've researched a lot but I'm just not sure what's best to suit my needs. I'd really like one that can hold three or four 3600 size trays with plenty of storage for plastics and perhaps some smaller boxes. Quick access for pliers as well as a dedicated water bottle holder would be swell. I'm not sure how it would matter but I've read that some backpacks are not ideal for boats. I've been a bank fisherman for the majority of my life however this year I've got a boating buddy so I need something that's good for shore fishing as well as boat.
  8. Was throwing a Flash Pointer 100 SP a few weeks ago, got a massive hit from what could have been a new PB smallie. Was on for a second and reeled it in only to find one of the hooks on the middle treble bent sideways ?. I'd like to replace but how difficult will it be to get hooks on there that keep it suspending? They'd need to be the exact same weight as VMC #8. Can it be done?
  9. My reels take a beating primarily being a shore fisherman and I'd reel like to touch em up. I tried using some black acrylic paint and some clear nail polish on my Lews reel and it didn't go to well...took some acetone to it and I'm ready to start over. Can someone tell me exactly what kind of paint and clear coat I should use? I'm having a tough time finding clear coat that isn't spray...I don't need spray because I'm only touching up parts of my reels.
  10. I sent it back, hopefully I can get it fixed without it costing me too much money (or none at all). I just don't like the grinding and it seems the spool has way too much wobble.
  11. Yes I heard about a bearing flush, I'll give this a shot. Assuming I can find some vids on YT on how to do it. Which bearing did you replace?
  12. Last time this happened I oiled it up and it got my casting distance back. This time that isn't happening, I'm getting about half the distance I should. With the spool tension adjuster set to as low as it will go without popping off and the brake dial set all the way to minimum, I'm only getting about 25 yards. Two of the internal pins for the centrifugal brakes are on just as the way in came in the package. I even switched one of them off and didn't gain any distance. I use mono backing with about 50 yards of 30lb pp and 6'6" medium rod. Spool is about 2/3 full but I don't believe having less line on a casting reel affects casting like on a spinning reel. I've owned the reel for just over a year now. What can I do to get my distance back? With the reel adjusted as it currently is, I should be getting major backlashes when casting.
  13. The grinding is back I think it's time to send it to Daiwa. They do however state that their one year warranty only extends to the original owner. While I did buy the reel in almost new condition I am not the original owner. Is there a way I could possibly get it repaired under warranty and not have to shell out $40 reel service fee? Seems the only want proof of purchase, would the UPC on the box be enough for this?
  14. I'd like to try out those Cadman's jigs...but do they really expect people to mail a check/ money order this day and age? Hoping there's somewhere else I can buy.
  15. Welp here's the problem. Genius I bought it from had line strung through the holes as you can see. Snipped em out and she's castin perfecto. It still does rattle a bit more than my other casting reels but guess i can get used to it.
  16. Where exactly is the "main gear" ?
  17. Starting to wonder if the grinding noise when I cast is just because of wet braid and the style of the line guide in the reel. I took off the side plate and put a drop of oil on the spool bearing and it seemed fine when I first tested it out. But eventually the noise came back. I can't say I get this noise on my Lew's reel when casting. As far as the clicking, I've discovered it's the star drag making the noise. I have the drag pretty tight...is there just a little play to it as well?
  18. I've been sampling quite a few different brand casting reels lately just to see what I like and what I don't. I picked up a Tatula 100 HSL a couple weeks ago, and it's got it's pluses and minuses. Let's focus on the minuses first. I get this really nasty kind of grinding/ rattling when casting lighter lures, anyone know what's up with that? Using 30lb braid. Also, I'm not sure what's up with the spool shaking and what they call "zero adjuster" (which just seems to be the spool tension knob). I primarily use casting reels for jerkbaits, so when I'm workin a jerkbait this thing just clicks like crazy since the spool is shaking and it's kind of driving me nuts. Is it possible to adjust it so the spool isn't clicking so much without sacrificing casting distance?
  19. Sounds good to me. It's not really a matter of being clumsy, it's a matter of being a city shore fisherman. I'm constantly crawling along tight spots with not a lot of casting room. I do think I could make better attempts to quit wacking my tip though.
  20. The insert is long gone. Rod still under warranty. It only cost 5 bucks for them to ship new tip, but if I get another one who's to say it's not going to happen again two months later? I'm constantly wackin the tip off stuff, I really need something more durable. I guess I should just call them to find out the proper size or ask if they can send me something that will hold up better...
  21. The ceramic insert came out of my rod tip a few months ago. They sent me a replacement tip and whammo, a couple months later it's gone again. I'd really like to find a different brand tip to replace it with but not sure on the size, particularly one I can order quickly off of Amazon. I'm thinking it's either a size 4 or size 6, anyone know for sure? As I understand it the Triumph is the mexican made version of the Premier. It's 6'6".
  22. Over the weekend I had a ridiculous time tryin to hook up with smallies on tubes and craw imitations, they always seem to never fail. Meanwhile I saw on a local forum that someone caught 30 smallies in one day mostly on flukes in the same river. I understand that they're one of the most versatile bass baits out there, I'm just not entirely clear on the best methods to use at different times of the year. As I understand it, ripping it across the top of the water is a great technique this time of year. I had a little bit of success doing this last year on a creek, but I've never got any action trying it on a river. Also read that jerking flukes is great for the post spawn/ summer time. I'm a huge fan of hard jerkbaits, yet I've never caught a bass jerking a fluke. Do I need to hone my technique some? I've been rigging them them upside down with weightless 3/0 wide gap hook and the action seems better, but really need to understand how I can make them be more effective.
  23. Really do believe it's my technique. I've been using spinning setups the majority of my life some I'm accustomed to whipping casts. Going to have to try smoothing out my acceleration. I'll also remember to check and see if line is digging into spool. Thanks guys.
  24. Checked my guides and they same to be fine. I'd really like to believe it's the light braid, but I just realized that the same thing happened to me a couple months ago while using mono. That time my lure snapped off and went flying into the river along with the top piece of my rod. I was very lucky to be able to retrieve them both. I do not currently use backing with the braid but this is definitely considering it as I've heard about it before. I was previously using a mono leader but double uni knot was failing me so I'll have to look into FG knot. Still not convinced it's the braid doing it though since it happened to me once with mono. I'm not new to baitcasting but I'm not an expert either. I really think that my best option might just be to try a different reel or possibly rod.
  25. I recently switched to 20 braid on my Shimano Casitas reel since mono has been coiling up too much on me. It's been working well, other than lures snapping off and flying into the middle of the river. I'll throw the cast, get a minor backlash or sometimes none, loud snap and adios lure. Not more than a foot of line out of my rod tip. What I think is happening is the thumb bar is somehow re-engaging on me. Seems to mostly happen when I'm giving a little extra 'oomph' to the cast to try and get some more distance. I do have a cheap rod, a Shimano Sojourn, but it seems to be exactly what I need for my jerking setup. Is it possible it's not loading the line correctly? It is two piece but I make sure the eyelets are lined up regularly. Stumped. Last year I was losing all my jerkbaits to snags, now I'm just throwing them out into the middle of the river .
