  1. This was a mistake on my part, everything I read compared the Tatula to the Curado e, I didn't know about the I series, so those were the two I was comparing. The e series were all around $200.
  2. I don't know anyone that has a Lews that I was able to try out. I saw a couple in the stores, but had no way to actually try it out.
  3. I know that there are a lot of people out there like myself and this is why I made this post. Many are wanting to finally move up and get some decent fishing equipment but have no idea what to get or where to start. I spent hundreds, actually thousands of hours researching before I bought my equipment. I visited all of the forums, read the posts, watched the reviews and every youtube video I could find. I went to several stores and paired several reels with several rods to see how they felt. I even borrowed each reel and rod from various friends so that I could try them out on the water. So after all of this, what did I learn? Which one was better? Comfort: I have been using cheap reels for my entire life. In my hands I could tell they were a different size but neither felt better than the other to me. I have large hands so the small difference in size meant nothing to me. Which one flipped, pitched and casted better? Neither. I was able to adjust the brakes and each one performed flawlessly, especially when compared to what I have been used to. Yes I could tell a huge difference between my $25 combo reels and the Tatula and the Curado, but I could tell no real difference between the Tatula and Curado themselves. I am sure that there are people that fish 250 plus days a year that can tell a difference but for an average fisherman wanting to move up in their equipment, I highly doubt you will find a difference in performance. How about dependability? Now I have not personally owned them long enough to tell personally, I have read every forum that I could find that has these two reels in their posts. My conclusion: They are both wonderfully reliable with great customer support and will last you a lifetime if taken care of. Looks: This is the biggest difference I could find between the two. This all comes down to personal preference, as they are both beautiful reels. So why did I choose the Tatula over the Curado? It wasn't features, as they are both packed. It was't performance as they are both evenly matched. It wasn't brand loyalty, before this purchase my best reels were Abu Garcias. So why did I choose the Tatulas? I bought three, two 8.1:1's and a 6:3.1. Simple... Price. I found the Tatulas on sale for $109.95 each. I was able to purchase three Tatulas for less than two of the Curados. Had the Curados been the less expensive reel then they would have been my choice. So in my opinion if anyone is looking at these two reels go for the one that you like the way it looks better or for which one costs less, as they are pretty much evenly matched. If your skill level is great enough that you can tell a huge difference between the two then you are probably not reading forums looking to see which reel you should buy as you probably already know.
  4. I have 4 tatula rods, they are my favorites, I prefer them to my St.Croix mojos, I didn't like the xt version as much. They are great rods I just really prefer the original Tatula. I have a veritas 2.0 that is scheduled to be delivered today. I will let you know how it compares with my others one I get a chance to try it out.
  5. Right now you can pick up a tatula, even a type r for a little over 100, you can also grab a tatula rod for about the same price. They are worth way more than their price in my opinion. You can also pick up a st. Croix Mojo bass for 79 right now. You can put together a pretty awesome combo for $200. I am seeing the tatula r100h and the r100xs for 109.95. Right now. That's a crazy price for the amount of reel you get.
  6. I say the fish don't care much about the line since I have caught bass before on catfish trotlines when using bluegill. If they can't see that rope I am not worried about my line. However that is live bait, artificial will move differently depending on the diameter and material. That can affect strikes. Have you ever tried the hybrid lines?
  7. I now have both the 35 LE and the 30 LE, I don't have an Academy near me, but Cabelas price matched and I picked up a St. Croix Mojo 6'10MLFX for $79 and a 30 LE for $55, so I brought them both home.
  8. One of my dumbest moments and coolest moments occurred on the same day. Every once in a while you may be glad you have a reel rigged with #50 spiderwire braid. I was launching my boat by myself, for some reason I wasn't paying enough attention and backed too far and too fast down the dock. I realized and hit my brakes. My jeep stopped, the trailer stopped, the boat however did not. As I watched it slowly floating into the lake, I contemplated jumping in and swimming to it when I remembered that I had a catfish rod in my jeep rigged with #50 Spiderwire. I grabbed it and it already had a treble hook and sinkers on it and I started casting towards my boat. The fourth cast hit in the middle of the boat and snagged the carpet (Luckily I had chosen to use carpet from Lowes instead of marine carpet, I probably would have never snagged it if I had). I slowly and carefully reeled/pulled my boat back to the ramp. From that day on, I tie a rope to the cleat and to the back of my Jeep every time I launch the boat by myself.
  9. I loaded one with #4 mono to try to see how it would do. I became very adept at removing the spool. Now I know #4 mono is not a prime choice for a baitcaster but if you are trying to throw very small lures, it may come into consideration.
  10. Another thing to consider is the line you are going to use with that setup. Some baitcasters even higher ended ones have an issue if you use too lite of line. The line can actually get between the spool and the housing either on the cast or on the reel.
  11. The bug is serious!!! I was where you were a month ago, then I happened to find an Abu Garcia mounted on a St. Croix Mojo bass at a pawn shop for $30. Now a month later I have purchased 2 Daiwa Tatula R100XS's mounted on Daiwa Tatula Rods, 2 Pflueger Presidents LE's one mounted on a Daiwa Tatula rod, the other mounted on a St Croix, an Abu Garcia Orra s30 mounted on an Abu Garcia Veritas, and I have another Daiwa Tatula rod waiting on my Daiwa Tatula R100H to come in. I also purchased an ultra light and a catfish setup. So yes, the bug bites and it bites hard, much harder than the increase in fish I have caught since the spending spree. However I am very happy with my purchases. Take your time and look around, everything I have bought other than the pawn shop purchase I have bought new and at half price. Most of the rods were $50 each, and for that price you can't pass them up.
  12. Are you sure it is the live well pump running? I only ask because a friend of mine had a float switch stuck on his bilge pump.
  13. Very nice, Onvacation, my rod rack is in the bedroom right now, we have a nautical theme and they fit in quite nicely. Thank you fishnkamp! I really feel that the 35 fits nicely in my hand, I am a bigger guy, 6'4 so the smaller reels don't fit as well. I do have some ultralights with 20 series size reels on them and they fish fine but the 35 just seems to fit me better. It is awesome that your wife fishes too, I am trying to convince mine to come. She will catfish fish with me sometimes at night in the boat (Even though she has no clue what trying to be quiet means...lol) but she has yet to come bass fishing with me. How do you like the Loomis, I haven't had a chance to try one out yet, but I know a lot of people swear by them.
  14. As long as my wife doesn't figure out how to look at archived orders on Amazon I am in good shape...lol
  15. Thank you so much! I have always loved fishing and usually spend 30 to 60 days a year fishing, but until now my "best" rod and reel was an Abu Cardinal paired with an Ugly Stik. I decided this year to treat myself and take my fishing a little further so I purchased a St. Croix Mojo paired with an Abu Ambassador for $30 from a local pawn shop, and that started it. I bought two Diawa tatula type R's and paired them with Daiwa Tatula Rods; a 7' medium and a 6'10 medium heavy. The Pflueger LE paired with a 7' medium tatula and I have an Abu Orra S30 that I am still trying to figure out what to pair it with.
  16. I think you would be better served with a Daiwa Tatula rod, they are Aaron's the $100 mark but they feel like and fish lIke rods costing twice as much. I love my St. Croix, but I actually prefer my tatulas to it.
  17. I would look into the daiwa tatulas as well, they are amazing, both the reels and the rods.
  18. I happened upon a great deal on a President Limited Edition. $45 but they didn't have a 30 so I picked up a 35. I have noticed that everyone says that the 35 is too big. I held the regular president in the 30 size and I couldn't tell a huge difference in weight between the two. I have it paired with a 7 foot medium Daiwa tatula rod and it seems to be the perfect balance. Am I missing something? Is there a reason that I should take the 35 back and get the 30? Thank you in advance!
  19. The weirdest catch I probably had was when I was about 6 years old. I was fishing at a paylake with my parents and aunt and uncle. I was playing around and cast out a tiny jig. Being young and not the best at casting my casts had plenty of air time. There were lights and bugs flying everywhere. I guess that had drawn some bats in. Apparently a bat had honed in on my jig thinking it was a large insect and it plucked it from the air. The weight of the jig must have thrown it off because it tumbled into the water. I was freaking out and so was everyone around me, but the guy who owned the paylake came down in a pair of gloves picked up the bat, removed the hook and it flew away. He turned and walked back to the bait shop like it happened all of the time.
  20. Thank you! I am looking at it on Amazon right now!
  21. Would you recommend it for both reels? I have never used it but have read several posts where people are singing its praise! Thank you for the reply!
  22. Hello all, I am having a hard time deciding on lines. I have been fishing since I was young, but have just now decided to upgrade to more quality equipment. I have 8 rod and reel combos at the moment, mostly $25-$40 reels with rods in the same price range. I recently bought a bass boat and would like to take my fishing to the next level (for me at least). I have decided to buy a new baitcaster and spinning rod. After a lot of research I have decided on a Daiwa Tatula 100xs paired with a Daiwa Tatula 6'10" Medium heavy action and a Penn Battle 2 5000 paired with an Ugly Stick GX2 6'6" medium heavy. I want these to be all around setups for freshwater fishing. (Except catfish and panfish, I have two catfish rigs and an ultralight setup for those, even though I may sometimes utilize the Penn for larger bluegills and rockbass.) My concern is since I have decided to go with these two setups most of the time instead of buying several cheaper combinations I am limited to two lines. (I don't want to change line every fishing trip.) From what I have been reading it would seem that a good braided line would be the choice for the Daiwa for an all around line that I can use for pitching, as well as many different rigs, T-rig, topwater, jigs, etc. I think this would allow me for fish cover as well as weeds and open water. On the same boat I am leaning towards a 10# mono for the Penn to be able to finesse the bait better. I would like any opinions that anyone has as to line choice and if you think there may be a better option for the rod/reel setups I will be happy to hear. Thanks in advance!
