  1. True, but they don't have the kind of market control that a company like Luxottica does. They're open to competition because of the nature of the business they are involved in. Again, not the case with Luxottica. Like I mentioned earlier, it's more troubling to me because they're in control of what's essentially a medical device that many people around the world require in order to live a normal life. You must not wear glasses, or if you do, don't mind getting the shaft everytime you need a new pair.
  2. http://www.investopedia.com/articles/investing/060315/google-becoming-monopoly.asp Not yet, but it's on its way.
  3. Yes, there are. Are they being enforced? That's another question entirely. Like I said to a previous poster, just Google Luxottica. You'll find quite a bit of information available on the topic.
  4. Not if I'm buying a brand owned by Luxottica. Essilar is now owned by Luxottica as well. Not sure what point you're trying to make. I'm saying I'd rather buy sunglasses from a company like Maui Jim or another privately held company.
  5. I don't mind buying from a huge company. What I do mind is buying from a monopoly. They control the production, distribution, sale, prescription for, insurance for, and maintenance of what's essentially a medical device. It's just plain wrong.
  6. They sold out to Luxottica. Eyewear based monopoly responsible for driving the cost of regular glasses, sunglasses, and prescription sunglasses through the roof. They also own optometrists and eye insurance companies. So, they get you coming and going. A quick Google search will turn up more information than you may care to know on the topic. The reason I'm choosing not to buy from Costa anymore is because I don't feel comfortable supporting that kind of monopoly. I'd rather give my money to an independent retailer.
  7. Just had this article come up in another group that I'm a member of. Really bummed me out to see it. I'll be digging into it to see if it's true, but if it is, I won't be purchasing anymore of Costas products. http://www.tackletradeworld.com/costa-owner-merges-with-luxottica/
  8. Never seen any evidence that the cheap sunglasses do what they claim as far as blocking UV light. Would love to see it, if you have it to share.
  9. Used acrylics to paint them and finished them with nail polish. I did one of my own as a test. Hopefully going to get q chance to fish it today. I'll see how it holds up.
  10. So, the lure making project went great. I originally bought 34 lures with the intention of each of the 21 kids just painting one, but they got into it and asked if they could do the rest. How could I say no. I've included some pictures of their work below. Was awesome to see kids who'd never even held a rod so excited about something fishing related. Thanks again to everyone that helped me out when I was looking for ways to finish them quickly.
  11. The difference between cheap polarized sunglasses and glasses from a reputable brand isn't about the ability to see, for me anyways. It's more about protecting my eyes from the sun. Think about the damage the sun causes to skin (relatively durable organ) and then compare that with your eyes (way less durable). For me, it's about making sure I can still see 40 years down the road.
  12. Don't know where you're located, but here the ospreys would take any fish that was struggling and the eagles would get the dead ones. You'd never see evidence. If the fish is near shore, raccoons, foxes, and even neighborhood dogs would take care of the evidence. I caught a bass once and had an osprey hovering over my head while I got the hook out. Had to chase it away before I released the bass or it would have nailed it.
  13. I know this sounds weird, but has anyone managed to find a reel that matches well with the Fenwick Methods and could do double duty in salt/freshwater? That rod is such a weird color.
  14. Good idea, but this is a one off deal. Only allotted those two hours and then the kids are off for Spring Break.
  15. Very interesting read. If it's been posted before, or it's not allowed to be shared, please simply remove it. https://activeanglingnz.com/2017/03/21/ensuring-fish-survive-after-release/
  16. We've got two hours to work with. I'll give the clear nail polish a shot. Thanks! I'm at 20 kids participating at the moment. I don't mind finishing a lure or two when I do a batch of my own, but I'm not going to do all 20 of them.
  17. The paint isn't an issue. I've got that covered. Just didn't know if I needed to put a clear coat of some sort on them as well as the paint. Thanks for the suggestion though!
  18. We're having an exploratory activities day in a couple of weeks at my school. I decided to do something fishing related (we had free reign to do whatever we wanted) and decided to let kids make/paint their own lures. I figured it would be cool for them to get the opportunity to create a custom bait to use when they go fishing. Going to have them name their lure's color scheme, take pictures, and hang them outside my classroom. Then, if the kids can actually bring in a picture of a fish they caught with their own lure, I'll add their lure color scheme and the picture of the fish to a little "Wall of Fame". I ordered some plastic blanks (assorted lure styles) and pre-painted them all white so the kids have a base coat on already, but I ran into a bit of a problem. Normally, I finish my baits with an epoxy of some sort to waterproof/protect them, but I'm going to be working with middle school kids. Middle school kids and epoxy just don't mix. But I did run the idea past my principal just so I could see the look on her face. It was priceless. Just imagine the results of 20 middle school kids and some 3 ton epoxy. Not pretty. I have been tossing around ideas in my head of ways they could finish the lures that would be safe for them and, just as important, allow me to maintain my sanity. The best idea I could come up with was clear nail polish. Anyone have a clue if that would work, or do you think the smell might cause the fish to avoid the baits like the plague? Is there something else I could use that you think might work better? Any and all input, thoughts, or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
  19. If I only had one... 6' 9" ML spinning rod with a 3000 size reel spooled with 15lb test braid. There's not a whole you can't catch with that set up. Works in the salt or on the lake. As for lures... 1. A ball head jig with a light colored swim bait and/or grub 2. Some sort of suspending jerkbait 3. A spinnerbait
  20. Thanks guys! So, I'm hearing 30-40 yards being the average people are throwing with 50 yards being a really good cast. Not feeling as bad about my casting, but I'll need to get out on a lined field and see exactly how far I'm throwing it.
