  1. Old Town Next. Paddles fast, sits still on an 8 lb anchor, and I'm no longer losing baits, stepping on bee nests, and getting prickers fishing from the banks. But sunscreen ... going through more of that.
  2. You got pickerel to sit still long enough to be measured. You must be the pickerel whisperer.
  3. Kicker, it was a long day and most of the *good* fish we had were caught around Jarvis Island which is only a mile or so south of where we put in at Wilgus. We beached the canoe on the island, and hit the jackpot working the shoreline with all the eddys and holes. We could have stayed longer but the map and the time on our watches said "no". The rest of the river in this stretch is tough, though, at least in a canoe with no fish finder. Caught a few more but after the island it was mostly just a long paddle. Next time we'll put in further north and end it at Wilgus. We were the only people fishing the river until about a mile north of Springfield. Somewhere along the way my car key found their way into the river. Which belonged to the car waiting for us downriver. And it's not a simple "call the locksmith and give him your VIN" kind of car key. I'll be back retrieving my car and buying a new key from a VW dealer in Keene, NH on Tuesday - which is where AAA towed it. We found a cab ride to get to the starter car from Wilgus - a miracle in itself. I'm pretty sure I forgot to zip the side pocket on my jacket with the keys in it - a pocket that was at gunwale height as I sat in the canoe. So they probably just plopped in the drink without me even noticing. One more thing about Jarvis Island. Its banks see the churning effects of ice dams, floods, etc and picks up all that may arrive there from the bottom and banks of the river. In addition to entire trees and tires, there is a lot of "river" glass. I found a 100 year old soda bottle (pic attached) from C.H. Eddy & Co., Brattleboro, VT. Its nearly worthless but amounts to the trade I made with the river that day. So there's the long version.
  4. Made the trip today. Caught caught 8 good sized smallies, 2 rock bass, a small walleye, and some gruesome white suckers. Had a long paddle, lost the car keys. Never a dull moment.
  5. Snowboard for me, everyone else skis. Enjoyed a few fun days at Magic this season. Check your PM.
  6. I'm in CT but we have a place in Chester. I go there on occasion. I've taken more photos there than fish. But that's no fault of the lake.
  7. Sounds like great advice. Thank you webertime. Hope I can post up some pics of decent fish. Our trip last fall we fished Somerset Reservoir, had a blast catching good numbers, but all small fish.
  8. A buddy and I are thinking about a canoe itinerary in early June. Launch at Wilgus State Park in Ascutney and disembark at Hoyt's landing in Springfield. We would float downstream and anchor as conditions merit. Is this a reasonable day trip? Not sure about how fast the river flows in this section but it looks like it's around 13 miles downstream. Probably going to be fishing for smallies. Anyone with advice or experience on this stretch of water? Thanks in advance.
  9. Master Bait'r ... tell me is that Lowell Lake in Londonderry, VT? If not, it's somewhere just like it. Nice rig!
  10. Caught a 3.62 lb LMB yesterday, along with 12 in the 1-2 lb range on a small pond fishing for 6 hours from my canoeyak. Private pond. Hit Scoville Reservoir last Tuesday in Wolcott and caught a bunch of dinks, 2 rock bass, 2 perch and 2 pickerel. It was a good week. Everything was on crank baits and spider grub jigs. The last fish I caught yesterday had an encounter with an Osprey that took a chunk out of her back.
  11. Caught a bunch of 1-2 lb LMBs today, but this Crappie caught by my buddy stole the show. Guilford lakes.
  12. Well since you posted this I've been out 2x on a private lake in Guilford. The first outing I caught 2 small ones. Last Sunday caught 3 LMBs in the 1-2 lb range on a gold husky jerk. The Osprey were catching more and watched one holding a bass in its talons swoop down over us in an obvious taunt.
  13. If you pack light and can manage a bike you can get out there quickly. When I'm up that way we park at airport park/playground.
  14. Signed. And thanks for the heads up!

  16. Got back out today and figured I'd just use this thread since any day I get out fishing is a good one. And I'm still in Connecticut. We pulled in Largemouth, Crappie, Perch and a good sized Pickerel. Used the spider parts jigs, blade jigs, and the realis vibration 62g. The realis caught the most fish. This last one I weighed ... 4.78 lbs. Good times.
  17. If you're in New Haven proper you might try Beaver Pond Park. Its by Southern CT University, check the corner of Crescent and Fournier streets on google maps. Driving northbound on Crescent you'd pass Fournier on your right and make your next right which takes you along a dirt road by a rugby pitch. You'll see a shoreline with a bench there and can safely park unnoticed. Its on my list of places to fish and haven't fished it yet but its got bass in there. Its also in stray bullet range of some of the worst neighborhoods in New Haven. I pass through the area often and its under-fished except of for the spring fishing derby for local kiddies when they throw a bunch of doomed trout in there.
  18. And remembers the gopro but forgets the net. Doh.
  19. Lost count of how many largemouth bass we caught today on a homeowners association pond where my in-laws live. I never see anyone fishing here and today finally found out for myself what a gem it really is. The only one I bothered weighing was 3 lbs even. We lost 2 that were bigger, naturally. We used the 1/8 & 1/4 oz. cabin creek salty spider parts all day. We also caught 1 smallmouth, 2 big bluegills and 2 decent sized perch. The saddest moment of the day is here.
  20. Caught a bunch of largemouth last weekend with both the 1/8 & 1/4 oz jigged Cabin Creek salty spider parts. Essentially a DT hula grub but in 2 pieces. Never a dull moment with those baits.
  21. Here's a video of the fish I caught at Chester Reservoir. Its only a 5 acre pond. They stock the reservoir with trout every spring, ostensibly for a kids fishing derby. But really they're just feeding the bass.
  22. It sounds like a great lake. If I were to retire and live on that lake I would get a good kayak and try everything. But I would start with senkos and hula grubs.
  23. Well I had some luck today in Southern Vermont. Caught 5 fish in the morning at Athens Pond and 3 in the afternoon at Chester Reservoir. Used plastic grubs all day, fishing from the shoreline. My two best ...
  24. Hello fellow bass anglers. I've been fishing on & off for 40+ years - currently most of my fishing is in Southern Vermont. Spots I've been hitting this year are Lowell Lake, Somerset Reservoir, Chester Reservoir and Athens pond. I fish from a canoe or shoreline. My avatar is a photo of me getting some help fishing off a dock in Interlaken, NY on Cayuga Lake, back when it all started ...
