#1 rule of surfcasting is to fish at night. Sometimes the fish will be at your feet. I wouldn't expect any great distance from that 8' rod however. What is it rated for in ounces? Instead of eels, maybe consider 9" Sluggos.

Without breaking the bank, the Tsunami saltwater rods are decent and affordable. I would consider either the baitrunner or Daiwa emblem. It really depends on "where" you're fishing. Open beaches? Breachways? If you're throwing bunker heads, you want a long powerful rod that can handle up to at LEAST 5oz. I would recommend PowerPro braid, 50lb and I use Berkley Big Game mono leader material. A rod for eels can be shorter and more forgiving in my opinion. I wouldn't fish live eels and bunker heads on the same rod.... just me.
