  1. I'm in Canada, so the pricing of these reels has a much wider margin than south of the border unless I go on ebay. In a big box store I can get a Fuego CT for 140+tax, a Tat CT for 170+tax, and the Tat SV for 270+tax. I can probably find a Tat CT on ebay for the same price as a Fuego in a store, but then I got wait for it to arrive etc. I'm new to baitcasters, I've tried out my brother's Calcutta B/musky rod combo and couldn't manage to cast a 190 WP more than 10 feet haha. My other brother has a few AG Ambassadors and same thing, one good cast, followed up by a few short ones and then a giantic birds nest. When I got my Tat, I never experience one short cast and the birds nests were few, far and between and minimal at best. At Cabela's, I checked out the new Curado, it's beautiful but just as expensive as the Tat SV, even the Canen is nice comparison for the Fuego. Doesn't mean I'm a fanboy but it's what I'm comfortable with, I like the magnetic brakes and I want to spend my time fishing not picking backlashes out.
  2. I just purchased a Tatula CT 5.5.1 for my cranking/jerkbait set up, might even get some 1/40z jig/swimbait love too. I've been debating getting another Tatula Ct for my jig/frog/swimbait rod but people keep praising the Fuego CT. I'm a weekend warrior during bass season which means I'm fishing 4-6 hours min. per day. What do you guys think? should I spend the extra $40 on the Tat or go the Fuego route.. and maybe upgrade the bearings this coming winter?
  3. I've used a 6'6" MH Abu Garcia Vendetta (Ultra stout rod) for the 30 Rat and 90/110/130 WP and it did great until it snapped. Although the BBZ-Rat looks like a swimbait it's all wake bait, which is a good thing. You can walk it like a spook, straight burn it (until it blows out), or burn-stop-burn-stop. I haven't caught a bass on it yet but in the morning dawn colour I've netted dozens of northerns. I bought a Fury 735 2 weeks back, it'll be a topwater/swimbait/jig rod for me. It's rated as a Mag Heavy (1/4-1.5oz, which is a huge range), but knowing Dobyns is on the soft side, it's probably closer to a heavy rod or a MH to some. I may try throwing a R2S 168 s-waver on it to see how it loads.
  4. I found the power pro super slick to fray and go fuzzy mid season. I've used the regular pp with success but trying out the maxcurato this year. Feels like the regular with a coating or something but has a thinner diameter.
  5. My brothers and I did a TW order as pike opens up this weekend. They went JDM Megabucks route and got some magdrafts, dark sleepers, grandsigletts and islides. I went in the other direction and got some jig goodies: 1/4oz Dirty Jigs Matt Alllen swimbait heads 1/4oz DJ Finesse Swimjig - Crappie 3/8oz DJ Swimjig - Pearl Ghost Shiner and Pumpkin seed Bream 1/2oz DJ Cali Swim Jig - Tactical Trout and Warmouth 5/8oz DJ Tour Level Pitching Jig - Black Blue Purple Biospawn 4" Exoswim - Pro Blue Reaction Innovations Sweet Beaver - Main Vein 2 weeks back I grabbed some goods and a Dobyns Fury 735c from a local shop: 1/2oz Freedom Stealth Swim jig - black blue 1/2oz Freedom Brushless jig - bluegill 1/2oz Freedom Buzzbait - black Missle Baits D Bomb - Candy Grass Netbait Paca Craw - Okeechobee Craw
  6. I've got a huge blowup on the straight retrieve once but too much slack screwed up hookset. It hasn't been a performer for me either, so I'm interested in trying that technique. Thanks!
  7. I've never considered walking a WP before, but I'll be trying it next wknd. I've thrown 90(munky butt)/110 (i know it)/130 (powder) all on a 6'6" MH AG Vendetta spinning rod. The 130 overloaded it, but I heaved it instead of casting. Rod tip upon the 90 so it swims smoother. the 110 is the best of the bunch and I've yet to catch anything on the 130. All my fishing buddies have had epic success with the bone colour then again the bone colour crushes in all R2S lures.
  8. 40lb Maxcurato to a 12lb maxima fluoro leader (probably 2 arms length), I'm not a pro either, so braid to a leader makes alot of sense when you use the same rod/reel for multiple set ups.
  9. Will do! I greatly appreciate your time.
  10. hm I think I would be more interested in the Sierra 734c if that's the case. I really appreciate the background.
  11. This IS great! Exactly the type of response I was hoping to get many thanks @fishnkamp being in Canada, we don't have the same offerings at Cabelas or BPS that you might see. I'm lucky I live relatively close to Cabelas, there's 2 in Canada. BPS is 40 minutes away, not as easy to sneak away from the wife and kid for an hour. I got on the Dobyns kick from a popular YouTube duo. I've seen others recommend the refurb/sample section on their site and I might purchase from their to get a nice discount on more expensive gear. The refurb/rep sample Savvy's are on par with a new Fury. What do you think of the Fury 734C and Savvy Micro 705c as a combo? Or would you think the Fury 704c and a Fury 735c would compliment each other better? Regarding the spinning rod, I was thinking about the Fenwick HMX but I will check out the Berkley Lighting Rod if it's at Cabela's. Shimano Sojourn I think is in the same category as the Lighting rod, I might look at those too.
  12. I think I'm leaning towards the 734c, I just saw the sample/refurbished section on the dobyns website. I might go to a Savvy Micro 734C or 705c for the value. It seems it would be complimentary to have a FR704 and a FR735 or a FR734 and SSM705. What reel speed do you reco for the jig rod for 7.3.1? I've also heard good things about Okuma TCS line, they have a frog/swimbait rod that might fill my other needs.
  13. @fishnkamp I need to pick you brain on jig rods, you seem to be pretty well versed on the Dobyns line. There's one local shop that's close to me (40minutes) that carrys the entire line up. Otherwise I'm using a few different forums/YT to gather info. I need to buy 2 rods - trick is they need to be versatile. I fish with 3 others 95%, so I can't have a ton of rods on deck. I already have a 7' MM (ike delay) crankbait rod paired with a Tatula 100P 5.5.1 which I could also use for jerkbaits. I have a spinning set up that needs a new rod, my AG Vendetta snapped on dinky Northern - I'll be using that for drop-shot and shaky head applications. For my next 2 step ups, I'm looking at adding a 6.3.1 and a 7.3.1 or 8.3.1 tatula CT reels. But I'm stumped on what I should select for a jigging rod then what that 3rd rod might look like. I primarily throw small to medium hard swimbaits (less than 1.5oz), hollow body frogs, spinnerbaits, and a variety of wake/topwater baits. For jigging, I'm looking to stay in the 3/8-5/8oz swim, casting and football jigs - I might be getting greedy but hopefully I can chatter/spin bait on this rod too. In general I was thinking of a Fury 704c, 734c or 735c. I keep reading the 735c might be too powerful on that lighter jig 3/8oz and the 734c might be too light for the 1/2oz jig and up. Budget comes first, I won't be spending more than the Fury. I've alos considered the Colt series, specifically the 734c ($119CDN) for jigging but I'm concerned about the sensitivity because it's entry level.
  14. I write left handed but dominant right. Throw right handed, bat/golf/hockey right handed, spinning gear right handed retrieve and I just bought my first baitcasting reel and it's right retrieve as well. I'll definitely attempt one-handed casting with the left before I try casting with my right and passing. Do what's comfortable because you'll be on the water doing it a lot.
  15. I've followed Carl on YouTube for sometime, he's VERY detailed in his reviews and opinion. Not a pro, no sponsorship.
  16. Just bought a daiwa tatula CT off ebay last week arriving by Friday and I'm from Canada. Do as others have suggested look for high transaction rates, positive feedback in the last 3 months and know what you're buying. Also, use PayPal. Departure Outdoors is my favourite lure store and I just bought my reel from Simmons Sporting Goods.
  17. Just picked up the 7' MM delay rod from the Spring fishing show, perfct amount of whip and backbone. Parobolic bend half down the blank, should cast DTs a mile and keep em pinned after setting the hook. Debating on pairing it with a shimano curado I 5.5:1 or daiwa tatula p 5.5:1.
  18. What reel are you using? low profile or round?
  19. I'm extremely interested in the Tatula series reels but I was concerned that the lure weight of a 130 whopper plopper or gantarel Jr might be too heavy for the application. There's everything from 2lb SMB/LMB to 45" pike and musky where I fish. I looked at the tatula tws sv, tatula HD, the ryoga Shrapnel and the Lunas... But don't know what would be right selection. I'm aiming to get two set ups: 1-4oz swimbait set up doing double duty for frogging and a lighter set up for everything else. I would prefer the lower profile reel over round, but I'm not opposed to the round reel. Ultimately, wanted to get your opinion because you use most of the reels I'm looking at save for the ryoga. TIA.
