Reel maintenance question
What grease is commonly used for the spinning reel gears. From what im reading i should clean out the old grease with ispoprpyl, wash, dry, re grease and then oil the other parts of the reel? I saw a video where the guy sprayed the outside of his reel down with Remington gun oil.

Reel maintenance question
I just used a new Daiwa BG 3500 for a saltwater trip. i didn't get to clean it properly after the last trip out in the salt and now i can feel it is noticeably less smooth and sometimes gets stopped completely when i'm turning the handle. i took it apart and the grease looks fine, nothing looks dirty (this was the first trip i used it on). Any tips on how to clean and service this reel? i really don't know where to start.

St Croix Legend Tournament vs Daiwa Tatula vs Kistler Helium 3
Deciding between one of these 3 for a new jig rod. All would be rated for 3/8-1 oz lures. Daiwa is the most affordable, and people claim its very sensitive, but i like the looks of the st croix LT and after researching it seems kistler makes some of the most sensitive rods. Anyone with experience, is there a big difference in sensitivity, and is there a big difference in performance from the higher prices of two of these rods as compared to the tatula? Also considering a refurbished dobyns champion extreme hp but i'm afraid a 705 would be too heavy and stiff for a jig/heavy texas rig rod. I know i've posted a lot about this, but really want to make sure my money is spent wisely. Thanks

Dobyns Rods
I know this is old but I have a fury and i love it. people say dobyns arent the most sensitive rods but even with my fury, one of the lower end dobyns, I have had no problem feeling every pebble, the change in structure, and the slight hits from fish. I use the 703 for light jigs and t rigs, and love the smooth, more moderate-fast action and parabolic bend because i can play fish well, and it makes for a very nice rod for jerkbaits, topwater, and spinnerbaits. Its also good for crankbaits. I'm now skeptical about "paying for more sensitive rods", because people say the DX isn't even that sensitive...yet ive always felt everything with the fury.

Beginner Rod Builder
Thanks, I will definitely read that book. I know everyone says you dont save money, but i have to disagree. I know i will have to dish out cash for the initial setup. However, since I already spend lots of money on my fishing hobby, I think of it this way: Instead of spending $250 for a high quality (not the best quality, keep in mind) factory rod, i can spend around $150-200 on a rod with better components, quality checked by my own eyes, designed to my exact liking, with my custom design. My point is yes its still hundreds on a fishing rod but if im going to buy rods anyways being able to build my own give me the best quality possible for the price of a "decent-good" quality factory rod. I already own some factory rods, and they are great for what i do. I only want to get into custom rod building because i can build rods of much greater quality for cheaper than what i usually spend on factory rods ($150-$250), coupled with the satisfaction of building my own rod, having my own designs, and my own exact specifications. I plan to build a couple inshore rods( one for fluke and one for stripers/blues/albies) , and have already a rough estimate of the price. both rods will have better quality (once im good at building) and lesser price than factory rods i like.

I have been reading a lot about how custom built rods often have a better performance than off the shelf rods for the price. I also want a custom, and figured why not try it myself? As a beginner, where should I start? Is it better to start with a kit or to just buy cheap blanks and components? How can I access a list of everything needed, and last, are the hand-wrappers that come with kits good, or are they usually replaced when one wants to make better quality rods? Thanks

Comparing Some Jig Rods
I'm narrowing my decisions down...I just started working at dicks and have 25% off lodge items. Correct me if im wrong, but that means items online as well too, right? If so, I'm now deciding between -A kistler KLX -Hammer rods, too many people swear by the sensitivity and feel for the price -St Croix Legend Tournament or Avid X, which i can get a 25% employee discount on hopefully If anyone has used both and can compare, it would help a lot.

Comparing Some Jig Rods
I tried A procyon rod , proteus, and Fuego exceler LT and crossfire reels and compared them to shimano and St croixs almost twice the price and have to say i liked the daiwa rods better and they were much cheaper. The reels felt way more expensive than their price range- I have to say once i felt the Fuego i regretted spending $150 on my pflueger supreme xt. It was smoother, just as light, and felt much much sturdier, also 2/3 of the price. The crossfire felt as good if not better than the pfluger president for 1/2 the price. I think daiwa deserves a bandwagon, however, the guy at the shop also said he wasnt impressed with the airdx and said its one of daiwas least respectable products and feels like a $50 rod all around. I'm only considering this rod for a frog rod now. I'm considering one, but if its the same blank id just get the tatula.

Comparing Some Jig Rods
I mostly fish a reservoir with varying cover and ponds. Can be rocky drop offs or muddy bottoms and vegetative areas. Im going to get a MH or H rod, It will handle the cover i come across. I will use the rod for jigs greater than 3/8 oz, and up to 3/4 oz or 1 oz if the rod can handle them well. Mainly casting, pitching, and flipping jigs, some footballs and heavy finesse jigs. Is there a big difference between MH and H for jigs? I cant imagine so, if not ill probably just get a H to handle very thick cover if need be and also i like the backbone to set the hook.

Comparing Some Jig Rods
I'm going to do so. Im saving up and have held off the purchase until next weeks paycheck. I am willing to spend up to $250 And am primarily looking for rods in the $300+ range either used or on sale. This is a big purchase for me so I am very critical about the specs I want, mainly being 1. sensitivity, 2. balance, 3. weight. After relentless research, It seems most of the internet agrees on these brands for sensitive jig rods -Kistler -ALX -Megabass -Hammer -Dobyns? (Though they were cream of the crop, but many seem to swear that even the DX isn t very sensitive for the price) I am also considering a Daiwa Tatula. It is well within my price range and people speak very highly of the sensitivity. I recently tried some Daiwa rods and reel in the 100 dollar and below range and was blown away by the quality for the price, so I am really considering the tatula. Anyways, any recommendations and opinions based on experience of these rods is greatly appreciated.

Dobyns Sierra
This is why it is tempting. Im going to spend the most on my jig rod for now, because i need sensitivity, and its on sale for only 127$. However, Ive heard people say it isnt a sensitive blank. I will buy it if its a sensitive enough blank, otherwise im going to save up for a used champion extreme. Cant find a solid review on the sierra...

Dobyns Sierra
Anyone who has used this rod, is it sensitive enough for a good jig rod? I am willing to spend up to $200 on a jig rod, are there better options than a sierra at this price point? Also, is it more sensitive than the Fury? Ive seen people say its not and people say its much more sensitive. They are on sale at TW and im considering buying one. Thanks for the input.

Braid vs Fluoro
Using Moss green braid i get just as many bites as using a long flouro leader. I have yet to see how fishing with straight hi vis yellow works.

What rods sensitivity wise would you compare the Aird-x to?

Comparing Some Jig Rods
I'm deciding between a few Jig rods in the $100-$150 range, and unfortunately can not hold most of them so I need others experience. I'm buying a 7'-7'3 MH XF/F Casting rod for jigs/Heavy t Rigs. So far its come down to -Dobyns Fury (I own one and like it, but have nothing to compare it to) -IRod Fiber (People love the genesis, this is the same blank with cheaper components) -Cabela's Tournament ZX (sale for $79) -Lews Custom Speed Stick -Possibly wait for refurbished Dobyns Sierra ----- I need to add, There is a 6'8 MH veritas on sale for $40. (I don't mind that it fishes one power up). Ive felt the veritas but thought the material felt somewhat cheap, and I've heard it isn't that sensitive. But $40 is a VERY good price... I also am considering the DAIWA AirDX. I was going to buy it for a frog rod, but heard really good things and some swear that it fishes jigs with the sensitivity of a $150 rod. However, the very low price point makes me skeptical...It would Reallly help if someone could give their honest opinion of this rod. Thanks

What do You guys use for Multiple Application rods?
I already have a L power and M power spinning rods, so ive got finesse and t rigs pretty much covered. I want to start throwing a jig as my main lure, and will also throw spinners, chatters, and cranks. Ive pretty much narrowed this down to a 7' MHF casting rod, I just need to decide on one. Frog rods and topwater rods dont need to be expensive so i can buy those anytime. May buy iROD Fiber or Genesis, not sure if the extra $50 makes a big difference...

What do You guys use for Multiple Application rods?
I am going to buy a MH for Jigs... I dont want to spend more than $150. Does the $50 between a $100 rod and a $50 rod make a big difference? I'm debating between another dobyns fury, Tatula xt, Irod Fiber or Irod genesis.
