  1. You may try a 6'6" medium power fast action. I've used this setup a lot with lighter weights and ribbon tail worms. they seem to be harder to cast than trick worms.
  2. IF you can afford the SV, get it! I love my type R and my SV. I just used the SV last fall in 6.3:1 and threw some light cranks bomber 2A 1/4oz on a windy day and I couldn't believe how well it casted. It's not so much distance it just doesn't backlash near as much.
  3. my guess is the gear ratio has steadily increased due to the smaller spool diameter. It seems like the modern reels are smaller and easier to palm so I guess that translates to smaller spools. My 90's reels all had 5 or 6:1 ratio. 7:1 was blazing fast for buzzbaits.... IMO, a half or less full spool will backlash less.
  4. I love my baitcasters. But their main advantage to me is deep diving crankbaits or spinnerbaits. They put a lot of strain on the reel and the angler. Most of what I fish can be done with spinning reels.
  5. I agree with FishnKamp. I found out a long time ago that I could only cast with a loose spool tension. Sometimes the spool would slide back n forth (side play)on my old gold Chronarch. But bait casters have came so far since I started in the mid 90's. Just got back into fishing and these newer reels are so much easier to cast. I have Tatulas, a Curado I, and a lews tournament Lite and they all cast really far. FWIW, I can l cast the Curado I slightly farther. But I can cast a 1/16 oz texas rigged culprit worm and a 3/8 oz jig far enough without having backlash and not adjusting the break on the tatulas. Hope this helps
