I fish a lake called sleepycreek lake in west virginia and i cant seem to catch fish consistently at this lake. I believe that the new state record for largemouth is in this lake. Ive caught a 7 pounder out of this lake on shiners so I know they are in there. I fish mainly for smallies so the largemouth is new territory for me. the lake is pressured a lot. So my question is do i throw normal sized baits keep throwin them and dont change or should i size down? Any advice would help.
I have found out and started to relize a pattern. I fish the potomac around the hancock area in maryland, and when i fish for smallies using jigs and tube baits every now and then i'll hook a muskie. they aren't small either, i'm talkin like 20 pounders. But when i try to catch them using 50 lb braid a 7 foot ugly stick throwin big spinners and 2 ounce jigs I dont catch anything. are they big bait shy or what am i doin wrong? >
My favorite smallie bait of all time has got to be the pig'n'jig. I tie my own jigs with deer hair. my favorite tiein color is black with a little chartuese on the bottom. I add a chunk of black pork, uncle josh 101a. The jig's overall weight is a 1/4 ounce. this jig is not that big I believe it doesn't take a big bait to catch big fish. This is a proven fact I saw a smallie caught out of the potomac that was 22 inches and 6lbs. I think that is enough proof to make me a believer.
