Largemouth vs. Smallmouth
Absolutely. Bassmaster elites on the st lawrence river had 50 25+ pound bags on the first day of the event last year.

What are your fishing goals for 2019?
The only goal I have in mind is to work on my offshore tactics. Last year I learned to basics of finding deeper water structure and catching fish there. This year I want to do a lot more of it. While learning this I unintentionally discovered how awsome smallmouths are. I have lived 30 minutes from the St Lawrence river my whole life and just started fishing it last summer.

Anyone fished like this before??
That's pretty much THE way to fish crankbaits for me. Unless im in rocky areas where you run it down to bounce off rocks. But I'll usually throw something else on rocky bottoms. I also know that if you bounce them off logs and trees, the bass seem to react to the direction change and bite right after hitting them. I think that stopping a bait over the grass line and then starting again triggers the same reaction from the fish.

How to get young people fishing?
Man I see kids fishing all the time. Maybe it's just this part of the world, northern new york, but they are fishing all over the place. I see them in the same ponds and river spots I used when I was a kid. I see groups of kids ride by on their bikes with backpacks and fishing poles a lot. Maybe it's just because I live on the river in my town so I see it more, but I see lots of them. There are 2 or 3 kids tournaments in waddington ny every summer that draw hundreds of kids. Waddington is a great fishing town with lots of free access to the st lawrence river, so I'm sure that helps. Just about every ice fishing derby around here have separate prizes for kids too. I don't know, man, I see a lot of youth participation.

Any body ice fish for smallies
I don't target them, but I catch them pretty often with jigs with small minnows while trying to get walleyes.

- Lowrance Hook 7x Tripleshot, thoughts?
I bought a hook 2 5x tripleshot last year. I had to do the factory reset every time I used it. It loses bottom all the time. It often just got the whole screen looking like the sensitivity was way too high. I could see bottom and the depth was showing but the screen was just noise. You can't manually adjust it either, btw. The factory reset would fix it, but it would do it 4 or 5 times a day. I don't know man, I just bought another unit to replace it. Overall i can't say i was happy with the hook. It was my first fish finder and it was billed as having all the features for a lower price. It has the features, but it just plain doesn't work all the time. I even took the boat to a dealer to make sure I had the transducer mounted properly. They said it was right. When it worked, it worked well. But it just didn't work all the time. The thing just seemed finicky.- Bang for the buck fish finder advice?
I bought a hook 2 5 last year. At the time it was around 400 bucks. Another $100 for a navionics chip. I was never really happy with it. There is more to screen size than how close you are to it. With 2d and down imaging it was pretty good. With side imaging, the screen was too small. You can't see many details on it because they are just too small. I fished with a friend who had a hook 2 7 and even that extra 2 inches was a lot better. The side imaging covers a large area and you are just trying to put too much on that little screen. It was basically impossible too see fish on it and smaller structure was hard to see. Things showed up much better on the 7 inch. I just bought an elite 9ti with navionics included for $599 at bass pro shops during the big sale. I wish now that I had never bought the hook unit. I would advise you to save up for a better unit. Don't make my mistake and buy twice. I could have an hds unit for what I spent buying twice.- New guy from new york
Hi all. I have been fishing most of my life. Mostly bank fishing for pike, cats, panfish, or whatever would bite. Last year I decided to start fishing regularly. I wanted to do more bass fishing. I bought a14 foot boat with an 8 horse on it and fished almost every weekend until August. That's when I bought a tracker 170 with a 50 horse from a co worker. I fished right through deer season! Anyway, i have done all kinds of internet researching about fishing. Almost every time i searched a topic this site would be in the search results with a post about it. I figured i would join up. There seems to be a lot of good info flowing through here.- What bait/lure do you have the most luck with for SMALLMOUTH?
Last year I had a lot of luck with typical dropshot rigs and tubes. I fish the st lawrence so gobey colors work great. On a small lake I fished often, I was hammering them with a super spook junior. I used the baby bass color and bone color. Both colors worked awsome. This was in the fall. I'm fairly new to going fishing regularly so I don't have a ton of experiance, but I wasnt expecting to catch so many smallies in shallow water on topwater lures. It was so fun.- Bass pro spring classic
One thing I will say as a negative is that the lowrance guy who did the seminar was also behind the counter when i bought my fish finders. I asked if the fish reveal feature was available on the ti units, and he said no, it's only on ti2 and hds units. I saw you tube videos saying otherwise but thought I might be mistaken. As soon as I had the ti on wifi, it said that updates were available. I download the updates and there it was. Fish reveal. I'm kind of disturbed that the guy giving lowrance seminars didn't know that.- Bass pro spring classic
I went to the store in utica ny. Bought an elite9 ti. Also got a small hook 2 to put on my trolling motor. Sat through a lowrance seminar. Planned on ice fishing Saturday until I got that flyer after work friday. Been watching for a good deal on a decent fish finder.- Second fish finder
I am kind of doing the opposite. I bought an elite 9ti for the console and a little hook for the bow. I figure I'll want maps and structure scan while at the console while I idle around checking spots out. I'll mostly just want 2d sonar while I'm on the deck. - Lowrance Hook 7x Tripleshot, thoughts?
