Bass fishing guru's How would you attack this lake
Just a question but why do you think that the discharge area is the best spot in the winter? Is it because the the oxygen content in the water will be better there? I have, in fact, done pretty well at the using a drop shot at the first big drop off infront of where the canal dumps the water in. I have also notices big bait balls in this area in the summer. I know that the walley were right under those balls of bait. I have tried to fish the dam and I always get snagged if i use any kind of soft plastic. I did catch a 21 and 1/2 inch walleye there early summer this year using a small lucky craft crank. This lake is not big and I know if I can find the sweet spot the fish will be stacked up big time.

Bass fishing guru's How would you attack this lake
It has trout, crappie, bluegill, catfish, walleye, spoted bass and Black bass. But the biggest bass in this reservoir might be 6-7 pounds. The bottom is as you describe. It is kinda flat except it has been drained a number of times (last time about 7 years ago) so it has road beds from people driving all over it. I think it has a lot of shad. Thats what the Division of wildlife told me. Thanks alot I will try some of this stuff.

So I should drive around untill I locate bait balls. Then I should anchore down and use a jigging spoon. Should I let the spoon go all the way to the bottom? If that doesn't work then I should try a heavy spinnerbait and cast out let it sink to the bottom and then slow roll it under the bait ball. Right? I know where the main channel is so I know where to fish that. I will also try a few of the lay downs in deeper water. I will give this all a shot either this Friday or Sat (which ever day is warmer) and I will post a report. Any more suggestions?

Bass fishing guru's How would you attack this lake
No this is Brush Hollow Res. It is a very small Res that is located just south of Colorado Springs in Colorado. It has got to sit a an elavation of close to 7000 feet. It gets pretty cold here but not cold enough to freeze every year. Sometimes you can ice fish it and sometimes not.

I doesn't have any current. It is kind of a funny Res. The water comes in on the south eastern side of the lake right next to the dam (right above the a in digital on the pic). I have had moderate luck fishing a drop off 30 yards in front of where the water comes in with a drop shot in the summer. It drops from 12 to 40 feet pretty quick there.

Bass fishing guru's How would you attack this lake
I hope this works. Here is a picture of a small Res. I fish on a regular basis. I will admit I am not the greatest stick. I do really well in spring but once it gets hot I have trouble catching fish. I have not been able to catch a bass when the water drops under 50 degrees. I know they are stacked up some where but I can not seem to find them. So my question is this how would you fish this lake with the water at 40 degrees or less? What lures would you try and what areas would you concentrate on? The north end of the Res is the shallower side of the lake. There is some under water laydowns in 20 foot of water on this side of the lake. There is also a canal that runs out to the main river channel on the upper right hand side of the lake. The south side of the lake is deeper. It is 50 foot deep at the dam and it slowy gets shallower as you get to the north side. There is a point on the west side of the lake that has a deep hole. It is the first really deep water out from the shallow end of the lake. Should I fish the area's that I catch fish in the spring and early summer just with different lures, should I move out to deeper water and spoon, or should I try something else. The lake contains spot and LM. Any tips or help would be great. Thanks Neil

Amistad info?
Thanks guys for the info. I hope I can get a guide for that time frame. I better starting calling people. I was thinking end of feb begining of March. Matt I have already been to Fork and it is a great lake I would have no problems going back but I just want to see a different lake this time so I am going to try Amistad or Falcon. I did find this site for Amistad and guides in general for texas. http://www.texs.com/guides/guide_search.cfm

If you could take a guided LM bass fishing trip any where in the western United States where would you go. I figured this is probably the best place on the net to ask this question because there is fishermen from all over the country on this site.

When fishing alone?
I fish alone about 60% of the time and I love every minute of it. I almost always catch more fish. To be honest I am already too competive and when i take my best friend out we are always competeing too much. LOL So we can only stand to go fishing with each other a handful of times a year. LOL When I take my wife I am always getting her line unsnagged or putting a lure on for her. So I can forget fishing half the time and my catch rate suffers badly. I do however have a friend that I would consider a better bass fisherman then me and I love going fishing with him. LOL He always puts me on fish and I always seem to catch a big fish. LOL

Swim baits?

-
Swim baits?
Where i plan to use this lure i can not keep the 2 1/2 pounders off my line. So I was told to use a bigger bait. There is rainbows in this lake lots of them so maybe i get can into a big fish bite.

Swim baits?
OK I asked how to target larger fish on the Smallmouth forum and I was told to use larger baits. One suggestion was Swim Baits. I have never used a swim bait before and I don't know how to fish them. Does anybody have any suggestions for me. I know you throw it out and just real it in but do you let it sink real low or do you swim it right below the surface also do you guys ever jig them on the bottom? Real it fast or slow? Deep drop offs or shallow bay? Are they a good bait during the prespawn? Thanks for any info you guys can give me. I plan on fishing one for and entire day nothing else no matter what! LOL

Too many Smallies in this lake to grow a HAWG?
Thats the info I have been needing. Thanks Walkingboss! You are right about the water this year too. It was only 46.7 when I went last Sunday. I didn't catch anything. I am not very good at bass fishing in cold water. I will try the tubes and the swimbait. Man I am getting pumped up for this fishing season. The next month in a half is going to be huge! I would love to catch a 5-6 pound smallie out of this lake.

Too many Smallies in this lake to grow a HAWG?
Hey Thanks guys for the info. I will pick up some tubes. When you guys say big tubes you mean 3 inch tubes or bigger? Maybe 4 inch tubes? Also when I went last year in May I caught a ton of fish with bleeding tails. I am assuming that these were male smallies fanning beds? If that is so then does that mean I missed the big females and I should have been in there a little earlier? Man I am getting pumped! I have really fallen in love with these bronze backs! What a fish! Thanks again for the help.

Too many Smallies in this lake to grow a HAWG?
I have a lake that I fish that is absolutely packed with smallmouth bass. It gets no fishing pressure because it is very hard to get too. It takes me about 2 1/2 hours to hike in and that kind of hike keeps people away. It has a pretty short growing season. I have fished this lake about 10 times in the last 3 three years. A typical day of fishing is any where from 30-50 fish (in 8 hours) and 100 fish days during the spawn are common. My biggest smallmouth is just under 3 pounds. Most of the fish I catch are in the 1 1/2- 2 pound range. My question is this; Is there too many smallmouth in this lake to grow a true giant? I'm talking 5 plus? This is a picture of a typical smallmouth I catch there. I don't know what water temp bass need for optimum growth but this lake hits 50 degrees around the 1st of April and doesn't get below 50 until around late October.
