  1. I received mine as well, the Hummingbird version. Now I just need to purchase the electronics. (I already know what I'm getting, just waiting to see if I can snag a Black Friday discount.) From looking at it, I cannot understand how the transducer is mounted to it. But I assume it will become more obvious once I have the transducer in hand.
  2. Have you considered one of the dry suits they make for kayak fishing? I don't have one but plan to do some research over the winter, as I would like to get out soon after ice out next Spring, and it's been a number of years since I've paddled. Trying to re-learn in dangerous cold water makes me a bit nervous! I think I would feel safer to start in a dry suit, along with a nice PFD too of course.
  3. I have bolded the baits that I've never even tried. And the swim jig I've only tossed for about 30 minutes total. (I had a long absence from fishing and most of these things, with the exception of the Carolina Rig, where not in existence or not in our repertoire back when I fished a lot 30+ years ago. As far as why no Carolina Rig? I was dedicated to the Texas Rig.)
  4. It could just be that they are inexperience versus not having respect. I used to see it all the time in the mountains. Some people just don't realize that putting anything down unsecured that is light is for the most part as good as gone most days in the mountains or out on the lake. And some people never learn!
  5. Question for @whitwolf In the Rebel thread that J Francho linked just up thread, you mention that any Deep Wee R that has the eye screw protruding through the lip is an old version before a special piece of equipment was introduced to the production line. Is this also true of my Double Deep Wee R's above? They all have the screw protruding through the lip about 1/8" or so. How old would this make them? I figured I bought them around 1986, but it seems they might be older than that? Should I worry about them not running true? If they don't, should I mess around with the screw to tune them? Thanks for any feedback!
  6. I ended up grabbing some 37 pound test split rings. I did one so far and it looks good: I think I need to step down one more hook size to a #8 though. Even with the short shank #6 hooks, these hooks are closer together than the original hooks I replaced. They are close enough that if I jiggle them around just so they can snare one another. So I'm going to finish the rest after the #8 hooks arrive. But hey that bait looks pretty good considering it's about 30-35 years old.
  7. I'm outfitting my kayak now over the winter and plan on going with 4 3700 boxes (1 narrow) and a large binder for plastics. These should fit neatly in the box directly behind my seat. I guess if it somehow is too much I'll fine tune what I'm doing over the course of the fishing season.
  8. My terminal gear arrived and the #2 split rings are only rated to 18 pound test. (Not sure how I missed that when ordering. Perhaps it wasn't listed.) Is that strong enough or should I buy something stronger?
  9. Thanks all - I ended up ordering 2 each of 4 color schemes all in 3/8 ounce. Also grabbed a tungsten bullet weight variety pack and some swimbaits to bring me up to the free shipping threshold. White head, bloody shad skirt, stainless blade Green pumpkin head, blue craw skirt, black nickel blade Green pumpkin head, bluegill skirt, gold blade Black blue head, black blue skirt, black nickel blade
  10. My thoughts are that the kayak is more versatile, since just because you have it set up to use a motor, it doesn't mean you can't take it out barebones and get into places that are difficult or off limits to a small boat, while still choosing to go out fully outfitted with a motor and electronics in other situations.
  11. Just so I'm sure it's not a typo, you would use a green pumpkin head instead of a black blue head for the bait with the blue craw skirt and black nickel blade?
  12. Great, thanks. First question is regarding the collar choice: Is there an advantage to a wire collar over a band collar? I'm assuming perhaps it's more durable? (But then again I don't want to make assumptions so will wait for an answer.) I think I'm going to go for a selection of the Shakin Blade in 3 colors: A white with a bloody shad skirt, a black blue with a blue craw skirt, and a green pumpkin with a bluegill (or maybe bream) skirt. I'm wondering what I should choose for the blade color for each? I'm leaning toward silver for the white, black for the black blue, and gold for the green pumpkin. But I'm curious if those colored blades are fished in more specialty applications and perhaps most people use silver for all 3 of the combos? (I literally have no idea and have never fished chatterbaits before.) I'm hoping to stick to 3 color configurations and get a few of each, so maybe 9 baits in all. Probably all 3/8 ounce for now as a start. Would love to hear thoughts on if those 3 color selections are a good place to start, and also any thoughts on the blade colors for each. I generally fish clear to slightly/moderately stained water up here in New Hampshire.
  13. Cool! I salvaged another in this color from my Dad's old tackle box. I'll replace the rings and trebles on this one when I do the others.
  14. Is it ok to ask product questions in this thread, or should I start a new one specific to my questions? (I want to ask some stuff about blade color choices for the chatterbait (Shakin Bait) before I place an order.)
  15. Is the Tungsten Shakin Blade a chatterbait? I would like to try some chatterbaits next season, and need to use tungsten due to local regulations. . He is a paid advertiser, which I'm guessing is the difference.
  16. I think the link in his signature.
  17. @king fisher I think it's a Yum Craw Papi in 3.75" in black blue flake. Edit: Hmmm I guess it cannot be this if the standard Rage Bug is 4", but it sure looks just like it.
  18. As a newbie to the forum, I do have to say that I feel very welcomed and have received a lot of great responses to my questions.
  19. I haven't in many years, but back in the day when I was fishing a lot I think I enjoyed it as much or more than open water fishing. Especially as a late teen when I discovered beer. What's not to like about sitting around a fire, drinking a few beers with friends, and waiting for the flags to go up?
  20. Probably next spring, since I don't have an easy way to transport yet (plan on getting a trailer) and I'm still shopping for a PDF. I maybe would have asked my wife to help me get it somewhere local for a test spin, but I'm not going to give her another chance to drop it off the roof of the CVR again!
  21. Thanks all. I ordered some #6 short shank trebles and #2 split rings and will give it a go.
  22. That's really nice of you! But I think I'm likely going to go with the NuCanoe version of the BlackPac, which already comes with 3 rod holders. I don't think I'll add any more to the crate, so I should be all set. Do you have any use for lead swim jigs? I have the following 3 colors of D&L swimjigs with 2 of each in 1/4 oz and 3/8 oz size, so 12 jigs total, all brand new except I cut the skirt back a little on one of them. Bought them all this fall when I started restocking my tackle box before I realized that NH has a ban on lead. I will be replacing them with tungsten versions and looking for a good home for these. I'll send them to you if you want them. Otherwise, I will go with my original plan and put them up for free to the first taker in the swap forum.
  23. Good eye! I didn't even notice, but you are correct that they have a little BB molded into the bill. Any idea of what I should be looking for regarding size of the short shank treble and rings? (I probably need to read up on how hooks are sized, I have no idea of how the system works.)
  24. Can anyone identify these older plastic Rebel crankbaits? They just say Rebel on the plastic bill/lip with no other identifying marks. I bought them at least 30-35 years ago. I'm wondering if anybody knows the depth they might run at, and also any opinions on if it's worth replacing the rusted trebles and rings, or if they are better jettisoned into the trash.
  25. It can't go any worse than when I tried to get my girlfriend (now wife) into rock climbing! My BIL got my sister into fishing with him. Most days she out-fishes him. I tell him she has superior fishing genetics.
