  6. Hey, First I am not a lawyer, but I hold several patents. I got back fishing again this summer and had a ldea about a new type fishing lure. I built a prototype and iterated the design a half dozen times. so far it hasn't caught any fish But conditions haven't been right so I am still hopeful. And before I go down the patent path I want to make sure the bloody thing works. ? So the point of this post. Some advice for my fellow inventors First don't disclose the details of the invitation on a public forum. (Here is a good example of where not to post pictures :p) Second, do a patent search, Google patents is a good place to do that. Not to be a downer but there's a better than 50% chace someone else already had the idea. This happened to me more than once. Talk about a gut punch, but don't let it get you down, keep inventing. Third is it novel enough? This is a hard concept to explain other than a example. "I want to patent a 4.5 inch plastic worm because no one makes one" Nope it's an obvious extension of existing art. (In this case art would be industry knowledge but it could be scientific knowledge) Fourth is there a market? I invented a novel thing for one of our customers last month, but the usage is so low it's not worth the ~80k in legal fees for my employer to patent. Simply not enough profit to warrent the cost. So it stays a trade secret. Fifth, Filing a patent. There's several options here . Write it yourself (very hard). I have literally reviewed/read over 100 patents and I think I could write my own, but it would take months and I will probably hire a patent attorney to review it (couple of $1000 at least) Hire an attorney. Expensive but worth it if you think you can make enough money from it. Talk to a "invention" , fishing bait company or whatever. Pitch your idea (e.g. Shark tank) But get a non disclosure agreement (NDA aka PIA or whatever the sexy acronym is this year) First!!!. Read it!!!!. You probably need a lawyer for this too for any contracts. I am not going to lie, inventing is easier than patenting the idea. And it takes a couple of years to get one granted (you can get a utility patent while waiting). But the feeling you get when it's granted is amazing and definitely worth the effort.. Cheers
  7. Nice it's only 3" across and it works with my cell, so no need for additional equipment. Just a little space iny tackle bag. Takes up less room than the clamp I use to hold it..
  8. Why not try a wacky rig? With seems like a sensitive tip would detect the strike with a strong backbone to set the hook. Might work pretty well...
  9. Hi I don't own a boat, so rent one every weekend. A nice 14 Jon with tolling motor for $36. Obviously there's a limit to the amount of equipment I can add to a rental (they probably wouldn't like me drilling holes ;)). I wanted a depth gauge and fish finder, then I found the Garmin throwable on Amazon. It cost me a $120 for the non GPS version, after using it once I got to say it's pretty awesome. It has a cellphone phone app and connects via Bluetooth. I used a pinch clamp and the provided lanyard it secure it to the boat. Which worked well. The a battery was down about to half after 5 hours fishing, so it should last all Day. Knowing the depth made a huge difference and set me up to catch my largest fish of the year (24" chain pickerel). The unit is supposed to be castable, I just dump it over the side. Anyway finally a sonar for non boat owners Pic are a stock photo and a screenshot of the app working on my

    Thanks!
  11. Rod is complete and it worked well yesterday fishing ?. I do think the reel is a bit big for the seat, but I have a second rod planned. This one will have a traditional spinning seat rather than a fly seat. I have a smaller version of this type reel that will make better fit for the fIly seat I think.
  12. Already planned. I just ordered a a long set of drill bits and a 15mm brass tube for the skeleton opening. I think the brass will look good with the rest of the rod. Picture below is the work in progress
  13. Honestly it has been kind of fun solving this. I could simply buy the Kastking fly/spin combo rod for $55 on Amazon and been done, but where's the fun in that. That and I wanted a heavier faster action

At least too me, A stick rig is sticking a round kind of twisted hook into the meaty part of a plastic worm, and slow jigging it up then fall on the retrieve. Pre dates Texas rig (I think), it's an old fashioned way to fish soft plastics
  15. I first started fishing with this type reel when I was a child. It's great in a couple of ways. You don't have to worry about wind causing a tangle and you can drag the line across your finger so you feel everything the bait does be it the bottom weeds or a strike

I had been throwing everything in the tackle bag, and had a hunch so I took a white jig trailer and stick rigged it. Second cast I got a small bass. The water wasn't very clear and I needed something light, the trailer was the only light colored plastic I had with me. Crazy but hey it worked
  17. Dremel with a cutting wheel I found a YouTube that explained it
  18. It's not the size it's the location.
  19. I fish a vintage reel type that's no longer popular, so I can't buy rods for them. So I am going to take a brand new rod cut the handle off and replace it. The picture shows the reel I need a rod for and the $14 rod that was on sale on Amazon (They still are btw). The lower picture is the replacement handle that will let the reel set further back on the road. I don't have a lot of skill but I should be able to pull this off. Wish me luck Update 5 It's not perfect but it is my first try at Rod modification, so I am pretty happy with it. I will be fishing with it tomorrow. So we will see... Update 4 I shined the brass tube with Never dull. Then used car wax on the tube to make it shine. The tube is at the center under the seat. I epoxied everything together an it's currently curing. Update 3 I bored out the grip and epoxied the first part of the grip to the rod. See photo. Update the vendor sent me the wrong and cheaper grip kit, but I didn't like not having a fighting butt. So I ordered another fighting butt and modified it to fit. Next is boring out a 14mm hole in the grip. It came with a 9mm hole. So back to Amazon and a set of long drill bits. After the drilling is a final fit check and a brass insert to make it look pretty. More updates to come
  20. Over inflated maybe? Coefficient of thermal expansion is no joke. Boats inflated full, boat and air inside heats up.... pressure goes up enough.. pop.
