Activity level or how aggressive the bass are feeding plays a roll on the line size you can use. Water clarity and light conditions; wind defuses/bends the light rays, low light conditions or cloudy/rainy weather, cover and structure are all factors to consider. Bass are only active for short time periods, we fish for them for several hours when they are inactive. It's the inactive bass that are affected by line size the most by shadows and noise. We tend to go with smaller lures to increase our odds of getting strikes and if you over power the lure with too heavy of line, your strike odds go down in clear water. The average bass lake, slightly stained water (depth of light to 6') with good cover of weeds, brush, trees, docks, etc., the size of the line isn't a factor as long as the lure action isn't affected. I can remember the high vis era and 20 lb line that looked like a neon rope and we still caught bass is clear water using it! WRB

LMB in clear water can be line shy, it's more like the heavier line affects the lure or bait movement, more than the line diameter or weight. Like Chris, I fish in extremely clear water deep structured reservoirs and had times where you had to down size line, lure and hook size to get bit. On those same lakes I have caught giant bass using both 12 to 14 lb mono or FC line on jigs and 20 to 25 lb mono on swimbaits. You can't expect to get bit using 12 lb mono or FC fishing with a 3" live shad or worm and 1/0 hook; down size to 6 lb and size 4 light wire hook and your in business. WRB

Chris, good to read a post from you, it's been awhile! Teach your friend how to reel set;crank the hook point into the fish and rod sweep, instead of "crossing their eyes" rod snap set. Tom

I completely disagree with that theoretical "finesse" emphasis you are supposing, don 't see any difference between wacky rigging a 3 inch senko and fishing it with 6 lb test than rigging a 6 inch senko and fishing it with 14 lb test, and many example can be made; finesse is not about how small are your baits, how thin is your line or how light is your rod, finesse is how deliberately slow is your approach. Finesse is about attention to detail and accurately targeting bass, the opposite of power fishing and cover water fast. Aaron Martens is a classic example of a finesse fisherman who won the Elite 2007 CA delta event using a 4" drop shot Roboworm with 75+ lbs., not 12" bass. We adopted the drop shot presentation from Japan, Japan adopted the Roboworm technology from CA. WRB

Generally speaking any lure less than 5" is considered average size and most bass lures outside of soft plastic worms and swimbaits fall into that category. We consider a 6" swimbait as a small lure, 8" average and 12" or over big swimbaits. If the bass are feeding on small bait fish, than go small, large bait fish go big, average size go with your standard you use during any other season. 3" to 4" crawdads make up 90% of bass diet when they are eating crawdads. 3" to 5" bait fish make up a large % of bass prey, unless the big bass are targeting 6" to 12" large size bait. Keep in mind a bass can't judge size until it gets very close or tries to eat the lure. WRB

Did the fish have teeth on it's tongue? The photo doesn't indicate where the jaw ends relative to the eye and the dorsal fin appears to be separated, indicating a largemouth. Spots have rolls of dark scales below the lateral line that can't be determined for the picture Could be a spot or a largemouth. WRB

I would try a slip shot Yamamoto 4" twin tail Hula grub, 3/0 off set hook to keep the grub in place and 3/16 oz bullet weight and small round BB shot about 2' above the hook. This is a finesse C-rig that should work in your pond. Color; green w/red, black, purple flake. The other option would be a jointed J13 Rapala in fire tiger, good pond lure.
