  1. I'm probably gonna get shunned or maybe even kicked off for this but all I use is Ugly Sticks and love them. I had a Berkley Lightning rod many many years ago and liked it ok but I don't think you can get one without the cork handle now and I don't like cork for some reason. As a matter of fact I bought my Lightning rod back when they first came out and had a lifetime warranty. I can't comment on any other rods though.
  2. Thanks Dodgeguy. When I was going back through the posts I saw your response and think I will try it. Berkley has a new Fireline out called Crystal and have put it on my ultra light. I'll give results later.
  3. I also think Quantums relationship to Zebco is a big hinderance. I had a Zebco 33 many moons ago and it was ok for a kid to get started on but wouldn't buy one now. I will say though, I just got back from Dicks Sporting goods and looked at both the Quantum Inferno and the Shimano Sahara and couldn't decide on which to get so I came back home and got on here. The Quantum is smooth. As far as getting into which product is better I think debate is not only informative but also healthy. So if you want to debate go to my post about Quantum vs Shimano and let's get it on. We can throw a few more brands in there if you like. I'd like to see what everyone thinks. BTW, I'm using the new Mitchell 300 X's right now.
  4. I went to Dicks today with the intention of getting a Shimano Sahara but then saw the Quantum Inferno is on sale for $50 down from $100. Wat to do What to do. Any suggestions guys?
  5. I didn't see anyone mention Suffix braid. Is it any good? According to them it's made for Spin casters.
  6. Ok I'm going to Dicks right now to get a Sahara to see what all the fuss is about. I'll put my Yo-Zuri soft hybrid on it when it comes in and let ya'll know how it did when I hang the big one.
  7. Thanks again RW. I guess if it can handle those two your holding up it's all good. I'll let you know about my experience with it when it comes in.
  8. Now that I see everyone saying Shimano Sahara I may have to get one myself. But here is another suggestion just in case. I have all three Mitchell 300 series reels and am pleased with them but since I've never had the Shimano I can't compare the two. Maybe someone else can if they read this. The Mitchells go for 35 bucks apiece.
  9. Anyone heard of or have a US Reel supercaster spinning reel? I'm thinking this might be my christmas gift to me this year since my b-day has passed. I saw it in my Cabelas catalog.
  10. Ok, now I'm mad at Berkley but not because of Fireline but XL. My line got hung in the crease of my finger and snapped when I casted. I lost my Live Pointer. I haven't been using Fireline long but it seems to be doing ok but have some Yo-Zuri #6 on the way and think I'll also try the Suffix braid unless yall say don't do it. That being said what lb test should i go with if I use Yo-Zuri or Suffix on my reels. I have the Mitchell 310X, 308X, and 300X reels. And btw RW if I like the Yo-Zuri you'll get a thanks then. Peace out fishing fans.
  11. I have a 6hp Nissan and am beating the crap out of my lower unit. I have a Macs river runner which is protecting the prop but need something for the lower unit also. Cabelas has a rock hopper motor guard but not one listed for my motor. I also looked at Clacka craft and will probably go with them unless I can find something just as good but cheaper. The Clacka craft is $165. Also anyone ever looked into a Compeau's Sport Jon? I'm thinking of getting one in a couple years. Child support will be over then.
  12. I've never fished from one but saw a group of guys pull in at a boat landing where I was at on a river and they seem to like them. That being said, I would prefer a Pelican,Coleman Crawdad or the Bass Hunter EX from Bass Pro Shops. I had a Pelican which is basically the same as the other two mentioned and it was an awesome boat. The only reason I got rid of it was to get something that cut through the water better so I could go upstream in the rivers here in VA. You can get a Pelican from Dicks Sporting Goods for about $450. I opted for a 50 lb thrust Minn Kota and it moved the boat well in slow moving water and was very stable. Trust me, I took it on rivers that were rolling and got an anchor hung and the thing still stayed afloat with no water entering the boat with three people in it the first time. The first time any of my friends got in it they were skeptical but after going through rapids with ease they soon lost they're fear of it especially when the anchor hung, which happened on two different occasions and with two different anchors, and the boat didn't sink. I didn't even need a truck. I just turned it upside down and strapped it to my roof rack on my Jeep Cherokee. By the way, I now have a Porta-Bote with a 6hp Nisan motor and I am now using a 25lb Golds gym weight lifting plate for an anchor so it wont get hung up. Live and learn.
  13. Thanks for the help. Since my hooks are new and I used 1/0 up to 3/0 I'm going to go with tail biter. Next time this happens I'm going to try a weedless jig head. I'm not a big fan of them but if it works then what the hell. The two inch pumpkinseed grub saved the day as usual. I ended up with about 15 fish but only 1 was worth talking about.
  14. I went fishing yesterday and got a bunch of hits but missed them all on this rig. I texas rigged a 4" lizard, a salty crawling grub, and a yum crawdad all on different size worm hooks. After the strike I pulled my line in to find that the bait was pulled down from the hook eye toward the hook. This happened many times. I even protruded the hook out of the bait thinking maybe my barb was too deep in the body of the bait. If the fish is getting his mouth all the way up to the hook eye why can't I hook him. Help!!!
  15. Thanks guys. I went to Eagle Rock on the James today and tried my Fireline. I was impressed. Zero problems other than no big fish. I did test the strength however, when I got hung up. I will also try some of the other stuff ya'll mentioned. The Trilene Maxx did ok but I'm gonna have to unwind it like some of you have said. I have done this before but sometimes to late. Lots of fish today but not anything to write home about.
  16. I didn't read all the replies but on the James River and New Rivers in VA they seem to love a 2" Mister Twister pumpkinseed grub. I try all sorts of stuff but I keep the grub on one rod so it'll be handy because it has been my best producer yet.
  17. I used to use Trlene XL but it kept twisting. I am now trying Trilene Maxx. It seems to be doing ok. I also got some Fireline but just read not too many people like it. Is there anyting that casts good, is strong and sensitive and doesn't twist. The Trilene XL would give me bird nests occasionally. I hate to leave Berkley but a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. By the way, I have the new Mitchell 300 series reels if that makes any difference.
