Worm Hook Size.

Featured Replies

Noob question.

What size of Gamakatsu worm hook for smallmouth?

Thank you.

It does not come to hook size for Lm or Sm for me. It depends on the size of the worm and how thick of plastic you want to fish.

If I fish a 4 in. to 6 in. worm I use a 2/0 or 3/0, on worms from 7 in. up to 10 in. I fish a 3/0 up to a 5/0, on worms 10 in. up to 15 in. I use a 5/0 up to a 11/0.

I'm very close to eyedabassman, 4" to 4.5" I'm using a 2/0 , 5" to 6.5" I use a 3/0, and 7" worms get the 4/0, I won't use the larger worms for smallies, not because of size but because if I'm using worms for smallies it is only because the bite is tough so I tend to keep the worms less than 7". Those hook and worm sizes should be a guide, it isn't a rule that you have to follow, as there are times I'll use a 2/0 hook on a 7" ribbon tail worm if I want it to have more action so you can see that the sizes can be tweaked to give you the best possible presentation.

2/0 and 3/0 are my most common go-to sizes for worm hooks. I don't feel the need to go any bigger for any of the plastics I use regularly for largemouth or smallmouth. I don't use the big 10"+ worms though.

3/0 widegap, good all around

3/0 widegap, good all around

I might step it up to a 4/0 or 5/0 for 10"+ worms, but I rarely throw them around here.

If crappie and little rock bass can eat a 3/0 hook, smallies shouldn't have a problem.

Its alot more about the baits thickness than the length of the bait. I try to get the gap of the hook atleast twice the size as the thickness of the bait

NGaHB

95% of the time I am using a 1/0 or 2/0 offset worm hook for all my bass fishing whether it's small mouth, large mouth, or spotted bass. If I am using a fluke or other thick baits I step up to EWG 2/0.
