Went out for some smallmouth today and we got what we wanted! The first fish I hooked up with was without a doubt my biggest smallie... I thought I was on the bottom until I felt her head shake, then

Shane and I got out today, fished a new sport for the first time and put together an alright day. Lots of pickerel, some pretty small bass but I did manage my biggest fish of the year SO FAR at 6lbs o

  • What's up, everyone?! Figured I'd bounce on here, say hi. I got so tied up in chasing fish this year, I forgot to do anything else. I hope you all are happy and healthy in this new year, and have big

Hi all.

Does anyone here know how the bass fishing is on Thompson Lake in Maine? Just booked a house for the week of the 4th of July. Wondering if anyone here has fished it.

Thanks

Smallmouth fishing is excellent in May.

Biggest bass of the day went 6.5 caught a few 5s and a bunch of 3-4 pounders.. I did miss a big gal who spit the hook after a nice jump, fish was definitely pushing 8.... Also caught two mudfish in the 8 pound range...

Don't even get me started on Thompson Lake. Its hands down one of my favorite lakes to fish, and I think it's largely overlooked due to its less than average largemouth population. It sets up well for me because I am a deep fisherman and the water is deep and clear. If my schedule is open during that time I could definitely take you out and put you on fish for sure. I've fished several tournaments on Thompson and had 0 largemouth weighed in. I have caught them there before, but its a smallmouth lake for sure. Mainebass nailed the month of May. Pre-spawn to spawn period is crazy out there, gets tougher from then on, but if you have good electronics and dont mind fishing 30ft of water, you'll do just fine.

Thanks for the input guys. Wish I could hit Thompson in May.

So you think July I should be fishing 20-30 foot range? I am assuming jigs, craws and the like? I'm definitely a better bank fisherman but am getting better at deep water.

Mainebass, I'll be contacting you that week to see if you are around for sure.

Cabin Fever is raging. Five feet of snow on the lawn, 2-3 feet of ice on the ponds. New spinning and baitcasting combos, lots of new lures, and not a chance I'll be using them anytime soon. Stopping at BPS tomight so I can at least see fish swimming somewhere, even if it is a half-blind striper

In about 6 weeks or so there will be no ice. As soon as that happens I will be out there.  My first bass in the boat most likely will be on a jig.

What will your first bass of the year be caught on ?

Jig with rage craw trailer . Gonna be throwing those in deep holes with my new BPS carbon lite rod.

Yup, jig for sure. With a Lobster.

Probably for me a white ragetail craw weightless. White and weightless seem to work well for me early. I cannot find rage lobsters in white.

Most likely in the Nashya river. With a touch of garlic stink on 1 claw

So just to get you all ready for spring figured I would share my purchases through out the winter. Pretty much have enough rage tails and soft plastics to last me a lifetime also got 3 new rods and reels. 2 7ft med/heavy rods one spooled with 50lb braid the other 12lb fluorocarbon. For jigging and heavy weight Texas Rigs. The other a 7ft Medium action spinning rod with a P flueger president spooled with 10lb fluorocarbon for finesse and small weighted Texas rigs. All rods are BPS Johnny morris carbon lite series rods. Also two bait casters are BPS Pro qualifiers in 7;1 gear ratio. Also had to buy the little cool souvenir shot glass haha.

I have a spool of 30# braid that will go on the new spinning rod. I tried floro for the first time last season, I didn't like it because it snapped with a good fish on it. But it was Spiderwire and I was told to use Seaguar or PLine, so I will give them a shot this year. Most guys have told me the Spiderwire floro is garbage

I usually tend to stay away from spiderwire at all costs as well. Especially the braid. I usually go with power pro for braid and Trilene vanish for fluorocarbon.I am sure the P line is good though I have heard good reviews on it

A Arashi square bill crank bait and down sized black jig with darker color rage tail.

This lead ban totally wiped out half my orders at bass pro XD. Bass pro as far as I know has very limited selection on non lead products. This is getting a tad bit ridiculous.

I agree I fish mass a fair amount as well no ban there correct?

Yes   Mass has a ban on lead .

Yes   Mass has a ban on lead .

Anything FUN is banned in MA. I've already notified my boss (err, wife...) I'm not retiring in MA.

Like it or not a ban on small lead is coming to most states. Fight it all you want, probably wont help. There are many alternatives, and you will probably be forced to adjust. Adjust or give up fishing. Some states are talking about a ban on lead bullets also. You dont have to like it but you do have to adjust. If you google it you will find many reasons to ban it. I just got myself a less than 50 lb stand up kayak. I cannot wait to use it.

I am not against it definatelly agree to changing it out. What I hate is that most jigs and weights at BPS or any other retailer are all almost lead. I wouldn't mind switching to tungsten or steel, but it seems to me from what I have seen correct me if I'm wrong is that most of the tungsten and steel weights only come in small packaged amounts. You can't really buy in bulk. Also they are a little more pr

Like all ban's read the fine print it's basically banning lead that's less then a inch and a half long on a hook or less then a ounce that can get swallowed by wild life (sinkers, worm weights ) those have pretty much been replaced at any shopping center. But it's slowly happening every place and once people create a competitive market nation wide the costs of alternatives will go down. I have already seen it online for tungsten weights. I would be more worried from what happened in Maine last year when someone put a motion to ban plastics for baits it didn't pass but those people will shop it state to state.

As long as I can still but my jigs im ok the proposed ban on soft plastics is concerning that would be a game changer hopefully it continues to get voted down every were
