Carolina Rig / Drop Shot

Featured Replies

Just curious.  I was just thinking, why not tie on a drop shot bait when Carolina Rigging?  This way you would have a Carolina Rig and a Drop Shot Rig going at the same time.  Is that a bad idea?

Describe a DROPSHOT BAIT.

Describe a CAROLINA RIG BAIT.

Baits are baits, there 's no dropshot only bait the same way there 's no c-rig only bait, the way you rig them is what 's different, a different way to present the bait. Presentation dictated by the conditions and where one rigging techique is prefered over the other.

I think I understand what Redtail is thinking. Why not tie a dropshot loop 18" up your line from the weight and let a 6" worm trail 18" on a leader behind the same weight. Do I have this right Redtail? I say give it a try and report your success. You may be onto the next revelutionary bass rig.

I also understood that part Ronnie, interesting concept and I admit that with high probabilty of success if the conditions of the bottom and cover are the right ones so you don 't snag with an exposed hook. Something like a double jerkbait rig, heck, I 've done lots of unconventional things, some turn right others don 't, but you 'll never know if you don 't try.

What I meant in my previous post was the first part:  was just thinking, why not tie on a drop shot bait when Carolina Rigging?

To me bait and rig are two completely different things.

I hear you Raul and I agree, I think Redtail meant rig when he said bait in his first sentence. I'm sure he will clarify this soon. We all have to keep thinking and innovating to keep catching them basses. This is why it never stops being fun. There's always a better bass trap. LOL

Ronnie was right about what I was thinking.

I was just thinking that when you set up your Carolina Rig, why not just tie on another hook a couple feet above the weight and maybe rig a small plastic bait (probably weedless) just to give the ol' bass another option.  It's kinda like using a jig instead of a weight when you drop shot.  Or when you drop shot with a weight, why not tie one bait 2 feet from the weight and another 4 feet from the weight.  You know, the two heads are better than one theory.

It's just a thought and probably not a good one, but I'll give it a try when the water softens up and let you know!

Use a jig as the weight and you have a 3/way rig.

The only problem I would have with this set-up is which rod to use.  I use a 7' Heavy Power baitcasting rod along with braided line for my Carolina Rigs and a 7'2" Medium Light Power spinning rod with light test flouro. for my drop shot rigs.  Therefore, if I felt a strike, I wouldn't know whether to use the hard sweeping hookset of the light lift to load up the rod.  I would hate to use a hard sweeping hook set only to reel in the lip of a bass on my drop shot hook.  I just think the styles between the two rigs is just too different.  Though, I have substituted a tube jig for my bottom wieght on the drop shot rig and that seemed to have worked (as long as the lake bottom isn't very rocky).

There was a Bassmaster article about this three years ago.  It talked about using a dropshot, followed by a jig, with a worm trailing the jig.  My buddy tried it.  He said it was a pain to cast and more trouble than it was worth.  But that doesn't mean it wouldn't work for you.
