lure testing?

Featured Replies

1. When you hit the lake do you throw what is already tied on because it worked last time, or do you change because it is new conditions and things are a bit different?

2. Have you ever just opened up your entire lure arsenal and tried each lure for a couple casts just to mix it up, test stuff out and maybe even have sucess on something different?

(My answer) 1. I almost always throw what is tied on at least a few times first.

(My answer) 2. On slow days a have tried everything in the box, including stuff I forgot I had. It can be fun to see the different actions and gives you an excuse to keep fishing. :)

I typically wait until either the night before, or just before I leave, and tie on baits to match the conditions. I rarely have any baits on form the previous day.(except my spinnerbait rod, that's always tied on)

There have been days that I think I treid every bait I owned, just to provoke a strike.

All my rods are pre-tied for all conditions, and Ill try different presentations before switching the bait that's left over from the last trip. Then Ill start tying different lures or plastic.

Sometimes I run the gamut when the bite is slow just trying to find something that works.Remember though that when the bite is really on it is a good chance to play with some new baits or techniques as you can gain confidence in them and really see if the fish will actually hit them. I get in different moods when fishing though and sometimes won't change baits all day and just focus on my presentations with them only.Casting angles, speed, depth, cadence is usually more important to figure out first then try to switch baits to dial it in.

I usually throw what was on last..unless I get something new. Then I tie it on first....can't wait to try it out.

I usually have a senko on last, so i will throw that a few times before switching

always tie on something new for the conditions first... and yes there are those days ive tried everything i own  ;D ;D and then start going through my buddies arsenal ...

I usually start off with stik's and see how they respond. If its slow I'll move on to other styles 8-)

If I don't tie something new on, I almost always re-tie everything the night before as I prepare for the trip. I usually make my best guess based on conditions and past experience on the lake I'm fishing if possible. I like to have a plan of where I will start and what I will throw, and if that doesn't work, where and what next. If after going through the playbook I'm not catching much, if anything, then I may mix it up a bit.

At one time I would quickly run through my entire box trying to find the magic bait. Now days I spend a lot more time on location than bait. I know that I may miss some fish doing it this way, but experience has taught me what works well for me. I probably should do more "lure testing" but you know what they say about teaching old dogs...
