I am looking to add a frog rod to my arsenal and would appreciate any input possible. If at all possible I would prefer a rod that I could use for other applications as well.

Here are the couple I've been looking at

I am open to any other suggestions and price is not important.

I use a Powell Endurance 7'1" Heavy action rod for my frogging. It has great backbone, balances at the reel, and doubles as a great flipping/punching rod, should the need come up. I also have a Powell Max 7'3" Heavy rod for flipping. If you were looking for a longer from rod, you could go that route.

If length is not an issue, Tackle Warehouse has Powell Endurance 6'9" Heavy action rods in their CLEARANCE BIN!!!! That would make one HELL of a frog skipping rod at an UNBETABLE PRICE ($110 I believe)!

I go with a MH graphite with a little bit of give for close in frogging or more sparse cover, since I am using braid and a little give helps. Go with a heavy action, 7' casting rod for heavy weeds and longer casts, since you need the power to set the hook and horse them out of the slop. Don't go too cheap on these graphite rods or you will get a pool cue action with NO give.

I use a mh veritas with micros and it kicks buttocks for the price. Bass, snakeheads, tree stumps...its handled them all

I have a Kistler z bone 7' heavy that I use for froggin - super strong and very, very light. Also use it for jigs.

yea the powell suggestions above are great. you can go with a powell frog rod, 735c. i have the dobyns champion 735c and use it for jigs, plastics, and frogs. ive noticed though that sometimes im unable to really get a good hookset with this rod cus its got a soft tip even when i reel down and blow their eyes out, i dont like that. fish comin off means no fish in the livewell which in turn means not finishing in the money, no bueno. you really cant go wrong with a powell, theyre amazing rods and honestly, a dobyns is just an over priced powell, trust me.

Are you primarily fishing toads (moving) or soft-bodied frogs (i.e. spro bronzeeye)?

Personally, I prefer ultralight/ultrafast action for the spro frogs (need to move line quickly on the hookset). I use the 7'6MH veritas for this fishing. The carbonlite and smoke rods seem well sutied for this fishing also.

For the moving toads, I like a rod with a little softer tip for max casting distance but a solid backbone. I use a Dobyns 735C.

A good all purpose rod for both soft plastic "toads" and hollow body frogs have been my St Croix 7' MH/F rods, I have two, a Legend Tournament and an Avid. Both have blenty of power for frogging in cover, and enough tip to get good long casts with the baits.The only time I don't feel as if those rods are powerfull enough for frogging is when I am dragging one across a mat thick enough you could walk on. If thats the case I just tie the frog on to my flipping/punching rod. I tried to make a 7' H power/fast action St Croix my all purpose frog rod, in fact St Croix calls them the "Frog and Slop" rod in both the Mojo, and LT lines, but it was just not a good frog rod IMHO. Plenty of power, but not a good caster, and it was the most tip heavy rod I have ever owned. I have spent full 8 hour tournaments frogging, and a heavy rod is not your friend. I would rather have a lighter rod, that migh be a little under powered and have to use the TM to go get a fish than be swinging a broom stick around all day.

Your best bet would be to contact Mike at DVT (sponsor here), and have a custom built. You will never feel the need to upgrade, and will be happy with your new frog rod forever. Customs are the way to go.
