Hook Size

Featured Replies

For fishing both Wacky rig and Texas style Senko's which size hook do you use? I'm trying to get better at matching lures to hooks and using the right equipment. This would include weighted and weightless. I'm just started to get confused on which to use and when to switch etc.

Basically what determines hook size for you? Is it just the size of the bait?

For my 5" soft sticks I use a size 1 for wacky and a 3/0 or 4/0 for Trigging.

I fish a 2/0 EWG and i have no problems. And if I get into any heavy weeds then I can change it over to a T-rigged without changing the hook out.

If I were to pick one sized hook 4/0 would be my choice. The style may be different but the size is the same. I use 4/0 worm and ewg for bass, 4/0 circle for live bait or cut bait, and 4/0 trailer hooks for some species. I do use other sizes but 4/0 is most popular, from fresh to saltwater.

3/0-4/0 for t-rig,1/0 octopus circle hook for wacky.

I use the general guideline that says the hook gap should be at least double the diameter of the bait so as to allow the hook room to get through the plastic and into the fish.

3/0 for 6" lizards and 5-7" worms

4/0 for 8" lizards, 10" worms, and larger size hogs.

Cool thanks guys! That's generally the frame I work with too, just wanted to see what everyone else is using.

That's for the help

I use a 1/0 for the 4" and a 2/0 for the 5" when texposing. A #1 wacky style hook works for either size.

5" senko T rigged= 3/0 or 4/0 gamakatsu ewg hook. 5" senko Wacky rigged size 4 Gamakatsu finnesse hook. worms under 10", craws, baby brush hawgs and brush hawgs (zoom), Pit boss, lizards etc are all 4/0 gamakatsu ewg. Rage hawgs, 10"+ worms and larger type baits all get 5-6/0 gamakatsu ewg's. There are a few exceptions where i use a 2/0 but not many....
