Ultra Light For Bass?

Featured Replies

About 25 years ago both of my bass rods were stolen off the dock at our lake cabin. This left me with my 4' 6" ultra light glass Fenwick as my only rod. It was this way for about 5 years and I used it for all of my freshwater fishing, including bass. I tossed basically anything I use today, plastics, cranks, spinners (though I didn't know about T rig back then), everything but jigs.

I caught plenty of bass on it. They certainly put up a good fight on that little rod.

I sort of miss that. Unless a bass is over 4 or 5 pounds they don't put up much of a fight on my medium action bass rods. I just reel them right in.

Last night I stopped for some casting from shore at the local lake and I happened to have two rods, one of my bass rods and an ultra light that I was using for trout earlier in the week. Tied a Rapala onto the UL rod and soon I was in a battle with a 2 lb bass. It was taking runs and stripping off drag (I only have 2 lb test on it so the drag is set light). It put as good a battle as an 8 pounder might on my usual bass rods. Loads of fun.

Anybody else here occassionally go bassin' with a UL rod?

Occasionally.

5'UL spinning rod w/4lb test Stren on the reel. I usually get panfish or 10-12 inch bass on it but now and then I will get one of those 2 pounders. Lots of fun indeed and a nice change from the heavier tackle.

I wouldn't use it as my primary rig though, even though I fish mostly open water. I do have the possibility of catching 8, 9, or 10+ pound bass in my water and don't want to take a risk of losing a catch 'cause of the UL gear...

Occasionally as well, I use a Pflueger Micro on a Shimano Sellus 5'6" UL spinning rod. Eventually I wanna get a Micro Patriarch. I use 4 and 6lb Suffix Flurocarbon.

Once in awhile if I'm fishing somewhere were the chances of getting a big one aren't too good. Don't like getting big fish on UL gear because you have to fight them so long. 6' St. Croix Avid with a Symetre 750 and 3.5lb DAM Techtan line with a 2" grub catches about everything.

Absolutely! I have a 14 year old Shimano Spirex 500 that is mounted on a Berkley Cherrywood with 6 lb fluoro that I love to fish with still. Its a blast to catch a 3-4 lb LM on. Even better is when I hook onto a Myan Cichlid, they fight soo hard. All I need is a rooster tail spin bait and my UL, and its a couple hours of nonstop catching fish.
