Ds Line Twist!!!

Featured Replies

I throw a drop-shot rig a lot on the lake i fish, i have good success with it, but i'm gettin sick of how bad my line twists up. I know it's inevitable but was curious if any of you have any tips of tricks i might be missing. Now i don't fish it perfectly vertical. I make long casts and use it kind of like a c-rig. I use #8 flouro and typically have my hook tied 2.5 above the ds sinker to keep it out of the weeds, and yes i use a ds weight. Was wondering if adding a barrel swivel above the hook would help? Any suggestions

In the rare case I drop-shot, I use a swivel at the end of the tag to connect to the DS weight. I think that most of the line twist comes from the weight rolling and turning while in contact with the bottom. It has help me, and have not had any line twist of significance.

Braid and leader. Did that 2 years ago and will NEVER fish straight fluro on my DS rods again.

Some line twisting is inevitable with drop shot rigs. I just deal with it. Every so often you drag the line out the back of the boat while you putt around, and that takes all the twist out of the line and when you reel it in it is on the spool with no twists. I think some of the line twist happens when you don't get it on the spool exactly right to start with, and then that twist gets exacerbated when you fish a drop shot rig. Re-tie and you're good to go.

What I do is, every couple of casts I lift the rig out of the water with 5 or 6 feet to the rod tip, and just let it spin around until it stops.

Also, reeling it in slowly seems to help.

I have been wondering if there are reels that lessen line twist....might make a good post!

What has been said already should solve your problem. I've just rigged up with the new VMC Spin-Shot hooks myself, to see if they are any advantages. Will let you know at the end of this season.

I've used fluoro for years with little problems though. I tie a Spro PowerSwivel (#8) on my main line, then the DS leader. If I get a twist (which is not often) I just let line out off the back of the boat for a minute or so, then re-connect my leader. No biggy really. I think a lot of folks get overly concerned with this problem. I've never found it to be something that would disway me from using the drop shot, for sure.

Use a bait caster. less line twist coming from the reel itself.
