Frog Mistake!!!

Featured Replies

I was fishing around noon this morning from shore on a small local lake and only caught a couple small ones on a fluke when I decided to throw a frog on the mats that are just off the bank. I forgot my line snips at home and couldn't cut through the braid on my frog rod to get the bait I had tied on off and the frog on so I decided I'd just put it on my mh set up with 12# mono...

BAD IDEA!!!

I threw about 15 casts when I finally got a bite about 30 yards away. I let the fish take it reeled in the slack and set the hook as hard as I could. My line broke about ten feet out and I was stuck fishless, frogless, and embarassed.

Any ideas why my line broke so close to me? I guessed maybe a kink from a back lash or something. Anyway, I'll never make the mistake of using sub par tackle to fish a frog again.

12# mono and heavy cover dont mix well. Problem solved

MONO?

WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?

LOL !!!

Oh well, everyday is a school day, take it, learn from it, and move on, the reason why it broke was most likely from the strong hook set, then the fight, you may have tried a little to hard to get the fish to you instead of letting it play out a little.

Probably a weak spot in your line, probably caused from fishing such light line in heavy cover. If it's heavy weeds I wouldn't even be worried about a little extra braid dragging in the water, fish will probably never see it anyways. If it's really bothering you just find a rock with a sharp/rough edge and pull the tag end back and forth across it a few times and it should cut it no problem so you don't have as much trailing. Guard rails or braided cables work great if you're by a parking lot or road.

I always carry a pocket knife to cut my superline. Nothing else but sharp sissors will work well, which I have in a swiss army knife I always have in my tackle box just in case.

yeah like i said i only used mono cause that was my only other option, won't even waste my time in the future.

I have the same problem, not a fan of super lines but I like the hollow frogs. Since I stopped using braid the spros and snagprofs get collected in a bag.
