Some Help On A New Rod.

Featured Replies

Is

Field & Stream Sportsman IM6 Casting Rod a good rod for pitching or flipping a jig? Also are they good for crankbaits, spinnerbaits, basically and all around rod? I am thinking about getting two of them. And are they for baitcasters?

The F&S Sportsman IM6 has two models.

1) Casting Rod

- This rod will work for closed-face spincast reels and baitcasters.

2) Spinning Rod

- This rod is for spinning reels. The eyes are larger than on the casting rod.

It's a 20 dollar rod, made in China.

What baitcaster do you have?

I have a Triforce 153c, and an Ambassadeur 5000c. Which are both old. So I don't know what type of rod to get for them. I want to get two rods.

I don't know how the Field & Stream rods compare to others. The Berkley Cherrywood seem to get decent reviews for budget rods. A St Croix Triumph is a little more but from a quality line. You want baitcast (trigger) rods. One 6'6" Med/Fast for top water, small cranks, light plastics and small spinners (triforce). One MH/F 7' for jigs, weighted plastics heavier spinners (5000c).

I have had my cherry wood for a long time, and for a cheap rod its great, its still running strong.

I have several too. I love my high end gear, but for canoe fishing, etc. I still go Berkely. I hear good things about their lightning rods as well, if you want to spend more and I would assume get a little more rod as well. To move up from there though, I think you are talking about $100 or more to better them. BPS puts their Carbonlites on sale for $79 and up from time to time I think, but the Cherrywood is hard to beat. If you want something to abuse and are not casting any distance, an Ugly Stick might be an option, but they are going to have a lot of give to them, and low ssensitivityas they have no graphite in them as far as I know.

Iv heard great things about the Lightning rod as well, but it tends to be about 20 dollars more, for what your looking for though, sounds to me like Berkley is the way to go.

Use what youve got till you can figgure out what you really want or need. Id suggest runnin up to bass pro and getting bass pro brand in whatever price range your lookin for.
