BUZZBAIT OR SPINNERBAIT

Featured Replies

Going fishing tomorrow to a power plant lake. Water will likely be slightly stained.

Would you start the morning throwing a buzzbait or spinnerbait?

I have been wanting to try a black buzzbait but not sure if the morning is a good time for it. I know its good at night.

What colors would you suggest? I know white/chartreuse, what about firetiger?

Water temp is probably 50; fish will still be pre spawn.

thanks

I would start with the buzzbait and give it a chance and then switch over to the spinnerbait or crankbait or lipless crankbait or Chatterbait or jig and pig.

50 degree water may have them active and moving up to spawn so they may be interested in a buzzbait. They will tell you when you throw it.

Let us know what you decide to do and how it worked out.

Maybe i am just bias but i wouldn't rock the buzz this early in the year. Spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, chatterbaits, jigs, and cranks are better options in my opinion. But hey, its your trip not mine. If you are going to throw topwaters this early, make sure your tackle is heavy cause your chances of hitting a hawg are high.

Go with the buzzer if the water is 65 or higher. I like a chartruese, black, purple, white skirt with a smokey joe fluke for a trailer. Have also caught some pigs with a firetiger skirt. They are by far my top 2 colors for spinnerbaits and buzzers. and I fish them alot.

I also would hold off on the buzzbait until water temps rise a little bit.............Of course, whos to say.........A lot of people swear by topwater year round so..................Try it all.........

50 degree water temp isnt very warm for a power plant lake. :-?..Go throw the buzzbait and rattletrap in shallow water around hot water discharge. You might be suprised. But a slow rolled spinnerbait and a small crankbait will be your best bet.

I would go with the spinnerbait for a while and see what that gets you. I always hook a few pushing the 5-6 lb. mark in in the spring on spinnerbaits. :)

I don't usually throw buzzbaits much in that cold of water but as for your color question--one of my favorite buzzbaits is a black & red skirt with a red blade Leverage.

If you're going to try the buzzbait, try the double bladed ones.  They move a little slower, which would be better this time of year.

I would have 2 poles with me, one with a buzzbait and the other with a spinner, and just keep switching. The fish will tell you what they want.
