Rattles or no rattles

Featured Replies

Hear alot about people using rattles on there jigs. I have used them in dingey water and never noticed a difference. I have quit useing them all together.  What are some of your experiences with rattle jigs? Do you think they make a difference?

When fish can't see the bait due to low light conditions or muddy or stained water, I go with noise.

Clear water or when bass are feeding from sight, I opt for no rattles.

I use rattles all the time. Why? Who knows, I just feel better doing it. I am a firm believer in getting more bites by putting rattles in all my tubes, all the time. For smallies and green ones. Am I doing the right thing?, who knows but, my tubes always have a rattle inserted. :)

I use rattles in stained to muddy water if it is normal fishing pressure. I rarely use a rattle on Lake Fork as those fish are hammered and I think they could get rattle shy. It is conventional wisdom that they are trolling motor and sonar ping shy at Fork.

Now that's educated Bass!!! WoW, what fishing pressure.

Almost every bait I use during night fishing has a rattle in it. Other than that, as others said, unless it's dirty water, no rattle.

I never thought about sonar ping until my cousin (who dives frequently on my home lake.....how handy... :) ) told me how loud it is underwater.

I use some kind of sound when I fish the rivers and streams of the Missouri Ozarks. Personally I think a rattle or even beads with a soft plastic rigs, tend to attract fish from out of my exact fishing zone. I don't know if they really help, but it gives me confidence, and I feel I catch more fish.

Hope that helped.
